Uncanny X-Men #1
A man is seen waiting inside his large exclusive private school. Suddenly, he "calls out" mentally to his students stating that he is Professor X and he is ordering them to appear in class at once. Then four costume-clad people appear and report for their lessons: Cyclops, the Angel, Iceman and the Beast. Angel and Cyclops help the professor get comfortable in his chair. Iceman plays a prank on Beast and freezes his arm. Angel has to pull the two off each other and Professor X begins their training lessons using his "training machine".
The Beast is first and is given timed lessons to help him with his agility skills. He first grabs a taut wire with his toes in a second and a half. He then spins wildly on the wire and jumps through the room in exactly three seconds. Then he practices his balancing skills while Cyclops slackens the wire tension causing him to jump off and land on his feet. The Angel takes his turn and tests out his wing reflexes. He flies around jet flames, through a giant closing clamp and then skips through a bladed spinner without a slip. He becomes overconfident, however, and when a sound concussion blasts around him, he loses his edge and begins to fall before recovering. Iceman asks the professor to allow him to take more risks even though he is the youngest student. The professor tells him not to rush things. Iceman then feels that if he is going to be treated like a kid, then he will start acting like one. He finds "snowman items" and puts them on to joke around. Beast throws a ball at him since he is off-guard, and Iceman reacts quickly by creating an ice "boomerang-sled" to send the ball right back at Beast. Cyclops shows off his leadership skills and uses his beams to stop the group from goofing off. Professor X stops the team and readies them for the new student who has just arrived by taxi.
A redheaded woman steps from the cab, and the group begins bantering with each other about the fact that a girl is joining the school. The team goes and changes while the newest student enters and is greeted by Professor X, who apparently sent her Jean Grey a letter to be enrolled as a student of his school. She questions the type of school that she sees, and Professor X states that it is a school for the "specially gifted", mutants, like herself and the others. The professor introduces the rest of the team, using their real names and codenames, to Jean Grey, whom he says is now known as Marvel Girl. She shows off her powers of telekinesis to the rest of the team by moving chairs and books. The Beast tries to give her a kiss, but she turns him upside-down and spins him wildly in the air before throwing him onto the couch. Professor X then tells the group their mission is to protect the world from mutants who would harm humans or other mutants.
Meanwhile, one of those very mutants, named Magneto, is hiding near Cape Citadel and watching a missile launch. He uses his powers of magnetism to control the missile and send it crashing off-course into the nearby waters. The Army and NASA standby but are astounded that the missile was destroyed. They conclude that someone tampered with the missile prior to launch. The next day, the Daily Globe newspaper states that this was the sixth missile to be destroyed and a "phantom saboteur" has struck again. Then the soldiers begin seeing weapons firing randomly and tanks being controlled remotely. A message suddenly is written out in metallic dust in the sky and reads, "Surrender the base or I'll take it by force. - Magneto." While the message is being read by the soldiers, Magneto launches a missile from a silo near the base. He causes it to fall into the sea near an unmanned target ship. Magneto then walks into the base and takes control of it. He uses his powers to entrap the soldiers in a "magnetic-fence" from which they cannot escape.
The X-Men are alerted to the crisis at the Cape. They each change into their uniforms and are driven to the airport in Professor X's Rolls Royce in order to take his private jet to the Cape. The X-Men arrive and request the army hold off firing on the base for fifteen minutes. Cyclops uses his power to make a hole in Magneto's magnetic force field, but this alerts Magneto of their presence on the base. Magneto fires heat-seeking hunter missiles at the team. Angel causes the missiles to lock onto him and follow him around in the air, while Iceman freezes them with snowballs. One missile gets through, and Beast manages to catch it with his feet. Marvel Girl then telekinetically sends it off into the sea. Magneto is amazed at the team's abilities and sends a pile of metal hurtling at Angel. The team stops to help him, while Magneto rolls a flaming barrel of rocket fuel at them. Iceman quickly encases the team in an ice cocoon when suddenly the tank blows up.
Magneto thinks he has won and starts to walk off when suddenly Cyclops' beam shoots out from the ground. The team emerges and begins to strike at Magneto in full force. Magneto takes flight via magnetic repulsion and blocks the team from following him with a magnetic force field. They eventually breach it, but Magneto has already disappeared. The army is gracious that the base is safe once again and thanks the X-Men for their help. The team then flies back home in the jet, while Professor X telepathically congratulates the team for a job well done.
Uncanny X-Men #2
Brief Summary
Professor Xavier telepathically orders his students to return to the school. Once they return to the mansion, Professor Xavier informs them that there is a new super-villain with mutant powers calling himself the Vanisher. Earlier in the day, he had robbed the national bank by using his teleportation powers to escape from the bank's security guards. Professor Xavier sends his students off on extra training missions to prepare them for the upcoming fight with the Vanisher.
Meanwhile, the Vanisher announces his intent to steal the Pentagon's defensive plans alongside his newly formed criminal organization. Professor Xavier receives word from his FBI informant, Agent Fred Duncan, that the Vanisher is preparing to make his move. The X-Men are asked to help stop the Vanisher, so Professor Xavier sends them out to Washington, DC. The Vanisher steals the defense plans from the Pentagon but is quickly surrounded by the X-Men. After a short battle, the Vanisher is able to escape with the plans.
The next day, the Vanisher appears once again and demands that he be given 10 million dollars; otherwise, he will sell the defense plans to the country's enemies. A day later, the Vanisher and his criminal army appear in front of the White House to pick up their money, but find the X-Men waiting for them, instead. Professor Xavier appears from behind his students and uses his powers to prevent the Vanisher from teleporting away by making him lose his memory. With their leader rendered harmless, the criminals are easily defeated by the X-Men.
Detailed Summary
The X-Men are shown racing to meet Professor X after he has "called them" telepathically. The Beast jumps from the roofs and lands onto a moving train to get to the mansion first. Angel is waylaid by a mob of women who want autographs and kisses from the X-Men star. Marvel Girl helps him out by telekinetically moving the women off Warren and onto the marquee of a nearby movie theater. Angel reminds Jean that Professor X has warned her not to strain her powers. Angel then lifts Jean up and flies her off towards the mansion. Meanwhile, Iceman and Cyclops notice a wall collapsing onto a construction crew. Cyclops turns on his visor to full intensity and blasts the wall to fine powder. The crew thanks the duo and they quickly head off to the mansion. They catch a ride there in an ice cream truck at Iceman's request.
Inside the mansion, Professor X commands the X-Men to enter and assemble. Once they are all inside, he projects mental images onto the wall to show them their next mission. He reveals that the Vanisher is their intended target and "shows" them what was mentally witnessed by the professor earlier in the day. The Vanisher is seen talking to policemen and inquiring about where the Metro National Bank as he intends to rob it. The police say there is no law against intentions and direct him to the bank. After he robs the bank at gunpoint, the police tell him to freeze, but he vanishes into thin air.
The teller is left yelling, ironically, for the police. The professor ends his mission briefing. Iceman uses the moment to play a joke on the team and shoots snowballs at them. Marvel Girl hurls the ice right back at him, and he makes an ice shield to block them. Professor X tells the team to stop. He says that their battering tactics will be useless on the Vanisher and directs them to train in the Danger Room.
Inside the Danger Room, Professor X sends missiles toward Angel, who thinks the test is "a snap". Xavier then shoots another missile at him and says to pretend that the missile is the Vanisher: his task to catch it before it eludes him, which Warren fails to do. Professor X tests his heart and blood pressure to help him train better. The Beast steps up next and jumps over mechanical arms that appear out of the floor. He unknowingly jumped over them into a hole that opened in the floor. The Beast strains himself to stop before falling entirely down the hole. He jumps out as Marvel Girl gently brings him down with her powers.
Meanwhile, at the Pentagon, the Vanisher appears. The guards ask for his permits, and he states that he needs no permits since "Mutants (Homo superior)" is destined to replace the human race. The Vanisher disappears and shows up in a conference room suddenly. Colonel Hendershoot and a general are discussing defense plans. The Vanisher tells them that they need to hold onto the plans as he will soon be stealing them from the Army in a few days. He then proves his powers by vanishing suddenly. The Vanisher is later seen being catered to by a large number of criminals from the underworld. They tell him that they are behind him and cheer for him. He announces that he has set his plan, to make the most daring move in the history of crime, in motion.
In the Danger Room, the X-Men continue their training. Marvel Girl holds a giant ball in the air using her mind. She begins to tire, and Cyclops comes to her aid. He blasts the ball with his beams before it crushes her, which she thanks him for. Iceman is jealous and decides to play a prank on Cyclops. He sends an ice-horse sliding at him, since Cyclops was such a gallant prince.
Professor X sends out a mental communication to FBI Agent Duncan. Duncan puts on a device that allows him to easily talk to Professor X via his thoughts. Duncan relays the Vanisher's plan to steal the defense documents. Professor X then sends the team off to stop the Vanisher. They are transported in a McDonnell XV-1 Convertiplane to look for the Vanisher.
Back at the Pentagon, a group of armed men guard the defense plans. Then the Vanisher appears and grabs the documents before vanishing. He is then seen down the hall where a group of men attempt to tackle him to the ground, but he vanishes right out of their hands! Next, the Vanisher exits the building and is met by the X-Men, who have just arrived. They tell him to stop, and the Angel grabs him. The Vanisher drops the documents, and the Beast recovers them.
The Vanisher then snatches them back from the Beast, but Cyclops blasts them out of his hands! Marvel Girl telekinetically grabs the documents and flies them around out of reach. The Vanisher sprays sleeping gas at Jean, and she falls to the ground. The Vanisher grabs the documents. Iceman fires an ice-fist at him, but it is too late as he has already disappeared. The team regroups and heads home.
The next day, the newspaper reads that the Vanisher has the documents and that the X-Men failed to capture him. Then a TV announcer states that the Vanisher plans to give the documents to communists, unless the government pays him 10 million dollars tax-free. The team bickers about their recent battle, and Professor X advises them that he will accompany them to their next battle. He also advises the government of his plan on how to stop the Vanisher.
The time comes to battle the Vanisher, and this time it is on the front lawn of the White House. The Vanisher tells the X-Men to leave him. Professor X confronts him and tells him that he is a mutant as well. He says he is directing his powers at him. The Vanisher suddenly realizes that he cannot vanish, and he even has forgotten why he is there and who he is! The criminal mob that was with the Vanisher attacks. The X-Men easily stop their advance. Iceman covers them in a hole Cyclops creates, while Marvel Girl points their weapons at themselves. Angel then rounds up the last of them. The army moves in and takes over. Professor X congratulates the X-Men on a job well done!
Uncanny X-Men #3
Professor Xavier interrupts the X-Men's latest training session to inform them that he has mentally detected a new mutant nearby. The X-Men find the mutant known as the Blob working at a carnival. They invite the Blob into the school so that Professor Xavier can test his powers. Afterwards, Professor Xavier invites the Blob to join the X-Men, but he refuses. In an attempt to maintain the X-Men's secret identities, Professor Xavier tries to mind-wipe the Blob, but he is able to escape.
Later the Blob returns with the other carnival people and begins to attack the school. The X-Men are able to hold off the carnival people long enough for Professor Xavier to use a thought intensifier to erase the carnival people's memories, including de-facto leader the Blob.
Detailed Summary
The X-Men are seen training their powers in the mansion's gymnasium. Beast is loading an ejector machine, which spits out large barrels filled with sawdust into the air. Cyclops is shooting them with his eye beams, Angel flies and catches them, and Iceman freezes them. Professor X and Marvel Girl watch from the sidelines. Professor X states that Cyclops is doing very well and has increased his reaction time by three percent since last week. He also announces that he is upset that Scott is the most powerful of the group, yet he is also the most unhappy. Scott replies that he is stressed by his powers and says that he even wishes at times that he were not "Cyclops."
Marvel Girl admonishes him for saying anything like that. In the background, Iceman splits a barrel open that Beast is spinning in the air. Sawdust goes everywhere, causing him to yell at Iceman for such a stunt, but also revealing that he abhors violence. Angel then spins a barrel at Iceman and knocks him over. Iceman retaliates by shooting snowballs at Angel and pins him to the wall. Cyclops shoots the snowballs to thaw them out, and Angel is let loose. Professor X steps in and commands the group to get back to training. Marvel Girl then takes her turn and tests her mental dexterity by telekinetically moving blocks quickly through metal slots. Suddenly, Professor X then tells them to stop and asks them to clear their minds of all thoughts; he has "sensed" another mutant and needs to hone in on his location.
Professor X scans the city streets with his mind's eye looking for the mutant. Minutes later, he says he has found the mutant and orders them into their street clothes to search for him. The men race to get ready as the first of them to do so will escort Jean Grey to the scene. Scott is the slowest one, but he also thinks to himself that Jean is the girl he would most give his heart to. However, the fear of his powers holds him back. Jean still tells the team that she would rather be escorted by Scott, anyway. Professor X thinks about Jean telling him not to worry for her, though he does. He also thinks about his love for her and how it is improper for him, being her leader and confined to the wheelchair. The team starts to leave, but then Warren swoops in and picks up Jean whisking her away to his car and leaving the rest of the group literally "in the dust."
They then begin their search for the new mutant. Bobby finds who he thinks is the new mutant, burning paper from the air with his hand. Upon closer inspection, he finds the person to be holding a magnifying glass and stealthily burning the paper with that. Next, Hank sees someone standing outside the fourth floor of a building in what looks like thin air. He climbs up the side of the building and finds that it is a man standing on a transparent platform in order to put up lettering on the side of the building. Scott is nearby at a carnival when Professor X tells him telepathically that he is close to the mutant. Scott thinks maybe it could be the man at a midway booth shooting targets without looking at them. He realizes that it is a hoax and that there is a man hiding in the booth shooting the targets. Scott blasts his gun, and the man thinks that the carnival is haunted. Suddenly, a barker states that the "Blob" is about to show and tells the people to step up and see all the feats he can perform. The professor says the Blob is the mutant they are looking for and that they finally found him.
The Blob begins his show, and the crowd is told to send up a dozen strong men to try to move him as he stands arms outstretched on stage. A group of men that includes Scott step up and cannot move him even after ten minutes. Next, a man shoots the Blob multiple times in the chest and stomach. The smoke clears and nothing happened to the Blob. The crowd begins to think it is fake. Suddenly, the bullets appear from inside his massive skin as if it is finally regurgitating them back out. Later, Scott meets the Blob in his circus trailer where he is smoking a cigar. Scott tells him that he is there to bring the Blob to the X-Men's headquarters and that the X-Men don't take "no" for an answer.
Then, Warren and Jean Grey enter and tell him that they are requesting Blob join the team. The Blob agrees if he can sit next to Jean in the car, and he advances towards her grabbing her arm. Warren tells him to back off, and Scott says he needs to learn a lesson and shoots him down with his eye beams. Jean steps in and calms down everyone's tempers, and the Blob says that he will meet with them at their mansion.
At the mansion, Professor X tests the Blob's strength and powers. He says that as long as the Blob is in one spot he is able to "command" his very skin. They test this by having him stand holding onto a chain while Iceman cranks it up to lift him. Instead, the chain pulls so hard that it breaks apart. All are impressed, and the Blob arrogantly agrees that he is the most powerful out of all of them. Iceman decides to show him a lesson and creates an ice block containing Blob's foot. The Blob wiggles his toe and breaks the ice. The X-Men offer him full acceptance into the team, but the Blob refuses, thinking he is more powerful than them all combined.
He begins to walk out, and the team tries to stop him as he knows their true identities. Professor X will need to clear Blob's memory of them all, so a battle breaks out as the Blob grabs the Angel. Cyclops is too afraid to shoot, thinking he might harm his teammate. The Blob goes after the professor, but Marvel Girl moves her mentor telekinetically to safety and shuts the exit door before the Blob can reach it. The Beast tries to stop him, but knocks himself out after hitting the Blob and crashing through the door. The Blob is able to escape and retreats into a network of tunnels through a manhole. Professor X warns that they must get the Blob to return, so that he can erase the X-Men from his memory.
Meanwhile, the Blob returns to the circus. He believes that the only way for him to get rid of the X-Men is to attack them before they attack him. He goes to the circus owner and demands that he gather the rest of the performers together. He states that he is "Mutants (Homo superior)" and that he is taking over the circus. The Blob rallies the circus performers into a mob and says that together, they will defeat the X-Men. Angel flies by to see what the Blob is up to. The mob shoots at Angel as he flies over the crowd. He dodges the bullets and returns to the mansion to inform the professor. Meanwhile, Professor X has been building an electronic mass influencer, which will allow him to erase the entire mob's memory of the X-Men at one time. The Angel runs to everyone's room to get them ready for a fight with the circus gang. In Bobby's room, a giraffe suddenly sticks his head in the window and Bobby shoos him out. He then sees the gang already outside on the front lawn.
The mob attacks the mansion and brings a battering ram to knock through the front door. Marvel Girl opens it just before they reach it, and they storm on through the mansion. They meet Cyclops down the hall, and he blasts them all right back out the door. Outside, a group of tightrope performers attach a rope to the top of the mansion and start to walk across. The Beast meets them and throws them back down. He spins down the pole they erected, and the Blob sends out a gorilla to attack him. Beast lifts the gorilla with his feet and spins him around as the Angel flies by. A wrangler tries to lasso the Angel but misses. Then, the Flying Zamboobas are shot out a cannon and grab him out of the air, bringing Warren back to Earth. An elephant attacks Cyclops, who shoots it back into the ground, but the energy he uses drains him. Iceman and Jean are then surrounded. Professor X admits that the team have the powers but lack the proper skills. He continues to work on the influencer as the battle goes on outside.
The Blob thinks he has won when Cyclops regains his powers and blasts through the rope they tied him with. He shoots the ground the Blob is standing on so that he can't get a good foothold. The Blob moves as some people throw a tight bag over Cyclops so he can't move his visor to shoot. The Beast finally defeats the gorilla he was fighting and goes for the Blob. He jumps over a few people and dives through the human pyramid. He hits the Blob but is taken down. The Blob ties up everyone in the group before leaving them outside while the circus moves to find Professor X inside.
Professor X sends out a thought to Marvel Girl to use her powers to remove the blindfold on her head and then find a tool around her to remove her bonds. Luckily, the circus-folk left their knife thrower's caravan on the mansion lawn. She gets a knife and brings it over to herself to cut through the ropes and free herself, and she quickly frees the others as well. Inside, the mob has found Professor X. He is ready to use his weapon on them when an ice wall blocks the mob from reaching him. The X-Men appear and attack the group. Marvel Girl rounds them up, while Cyclops, Angel, Beast, and Iceman fight them all. Cyclops blasts the floor under the Blob, and he falls through. Professor X quickly uses his weapon to erase all their memories, and then uses his powers to suggest them to forget about the X-Men and the mansion. The mob recovers and soon questions where they are and why they are there. They all go back to the circus, so they are not fired. Professor X congratulates the X-Men and says that he could not defeat the Blob without them. The Blob meanwhile, returns to circus life as if nothing happened. The professor worries though that someday the Blob's memory may return.
Uncanny X-Men #4
The X-Men are in the middle of their latest training session. Marvel Girl is given the task of lifting a lid from a box using her telekinetic powers. Once it is opened, she finds a cake stashed inside! Professor Xavier explains that it has been one year since classes first started at the school, and he felt that the date should be celebrated.
Meanwhile, four other mutants, known as Toad, Mastermind, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, are seen having dinner. Mastermind tries to impress the Scarlet Witch, but she is not interested in him. Mastermind threatens her, but Quicksilver intervenes to protect his sister. Magneto is elsewhere, seen stealing a freighter and returning it to his secret headquarters somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. When Magneto returns, Toad informs him that Quicksilver and Mastermind were fighting. Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch tell Magneto that they do not want to be members of his group anymore, but Magneto informs them that they are forever in his debt. The group has a flashback to a town in Europe where Magneto saves the Scarlet Witch from an angry mob that wants to kill her for burning down a barn with her mutant powers.
Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants use the stolen freighter to attack the small nation of Santo Marco in South America. Professor Xavier learns of the attack and contacts Magneto on the astral plane using his telepathic powers. Professor Xavier and Magneto dispute their different views on mutant and human relations; Professor Xavier believes that they should coexist with one another, while Magneto believes that homo-superior should rule the world. Mastermind creates an imaginary army to frighten Santo Marco's populace so that the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants can easily take over the country.
Professor Xavier and the X-Men travel to Santo Marco under the guise of an American professor and his students on a goodwill mission. Once they are in the country, the X-Men change into their costumes and attack the Brotherhood. Mastermind tries to scare the X-Men away by creating an illusion of a fire wall in the X-Men's path. Professor Xavier realizes that the fire is not real, so he enters it to show his students that there is nothing to fear.
The X-Men devise a plan to attack the Brotherhood, but do not realize that the palace door has been booby trapped with a bomb. Just before Beast opens the door, Professor Xavier senses the danger and hurls himself in front of the X-Men to protect them! The Brotherhood escape from the palace, but not before Quicksilver disarms a second bomb intended to destroy the entire nation along with the X-Men. Professor Xavier regains consciousness only to learn that his telepathic powers were damaged by the explosion.
Uncanny X-Men #5
The X-Men's last battle against Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants injured the Professor, seemingly destroying his telepathic abilities. They return Professor Xavier to the mansion so that he can get some rest and hopefully regain his powers. The X-Men ponder what they will do without Professor Xavier's help when they hear Marvel Girl's parents arrive for a visit. The X-Men quickly change into their civilian clothes so they can greet their visitors. They excuse Professor Xavier's absence and give Jean Grey's parents a tour of the mansion. The party heads to the Danger Room where Hank McCoy explains that it is a gymnasium and that the lack of all furnishings is because they are receiving new equipment. While the group goes into the lunchroom, Scott Summers is accidentally trapped in the Danger Room, and a program designed for the Beast starts automatically. He escapes the obstacles that the Danger Room presents by destroying them. Outside of the Danger Room, Jean's parents are unaware of anything out of the ordinary, and they leave.
But nobody noticed one of Magneto's henchmen, Mastermind, searching for the X-Men's headquarters! After a few minutes, he calls Magneto to pick him up; the X-Men are not nearby. On Asteroid M, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch ask him why it is so important to find the X-Men, so Magneto explains that as long as the X-Men are around, they will intervene in his plans for mutants to rule the world. He then explains that he has devised a new plan in order to coax the X-Men out of their HQ.
Back at the mansion, Scott ponders a plan to stop the Brotherhood when Bobby asks if he'd like to watch a track meet. Scott yells at him for not caring about the Professor. While Jean covers Professor Xavier with a blanket, Hank and Warren join Bobby by the television, along with Jean and the Professor. There is a contestant that wins the track meet using incredible jumps, so the crowd turns on him because they believe he is a cheater. The X-Men realize that the contestant is a mutant, so they head out to help him.
Once they rescue the mutant from the angry crowd, the X-Men escape to the subway. As they arrive at the next station, the Beast realizes something familiar about the mutant. The Beast pulls off a mask to reveal that it is actually the Toad, another one of Magneto's henchmen. The whole Brotherhood then arrives to attack the X-Men, and Magneto captures the Angel. The Brotherhood flee with Angel, but they are forced to leave Toad, who was captured by the X-Men. Back on Asteroid M, Magneto interrogates Angel as to the location of the other X-Men, but Angel refuses to tell him. Magneto then attempts to brainwash Angel.
The X-Men try to decide what to do with Toad when he suddenly falls into a trance. His only thoughts are that he has to return to Magneto, so he pulls out a communicator and summons a capsule from the sky. The X-Men follow the Toad, in order to find Angel. They appear on Asteroid M, to the Brotherhood's surprise. Magneto attempts to kill the X-Men with the push of a button, but the console is sabotaged by the Scarlet Witch because she cannot tolerate murder. Magneto and the two siblings argue over their loyalties, giving the X-Men time to free the Angel and attack!
The fighting causes some extensive damage to Asteroid M, which causes it to start to fall apart. Cyclops is trapped in a section of the asteroid that breaks off right away. Iceman has to create an ice tunnel so that Angel can rescue Cyclops. Before the asteroid is fully destroyed, the X-Men use the capsule to return to Earth. Upon returning to the mansion, they try to tell Professor Xavier what had occurred. Professor Xavier informs them that he was able to follow everything because he did not lose his telepathy! Since the X-Men performed this solo mission perfectly, they passed their final exams and their training is over.
Uncanny X-Men #6
Professor Xavier reads a newspaper article about the Sub-Mariner. He wonders whether or not the Sub-Mariner is a mutant. Meanwhile, Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants are at their new headquarters on an island, pondering the same thing. Magneto tries to recruit the Sub-Mariner by projecting his astral form under the ocean. Professor Xavier does the same thing from the mansion, but he hides his astral form when he senses Magneto's astral form nearby.
Magneto finds Namor's underwater kingdom, but he decides not to approach the Sub-Mariner following an outburst that he witnesses. Instead, Magneto approaches one of the other Atlanteans and makes a deal. In exchange for delivering a message from him, Magneto claims that the Atlantean can become the new ruler of Atlantis, if the Sub-Mariner joins the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
Back at the mansion, Professor Xavier informs his students that Magneto is attempting to recruit Namor and that he knows where Magneto's new base is located. The X-Men board a ship and head out to stop Magneto. Namor is persuaded into meeting with Magneto on his secret island. He is quickly impressed by how the island is run using Magneto's powers in conjunction with a giant magnet at the center of the island.
The X-Men arrive, and a battle begins amongst the two groups. Magneto destroys the X-Men's ship, but they use an ice-craft to make it to shore. Cyclops realizes that the giant magnet powers everything, so he tries to destroy it, but Quicksilver attacks before he can do anything.
The X-Men subdue Quicksilver, which causes the Scarlet Witch to fear for her brother's safety. Magneto becomes angered with the Scarlet Witch and yells at her. At this point, both Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch question Magneto's actions but they continue to follow him. Xavier mentions this may be because they are being controlled subconsciously.
The Sub-Mariner realizes what type of man he has allied himself with, so he turns against Magneto and destroys the magnet's controls. The X-Men break into the lab, so Magneto, Toad and Mastermind run away. The Scarlet Witch demands that Quicksilver be returned to her, but the X-Men do not comply. A short battle breaks out and is stopped by Professor Xavier when he brings Quicksilver, under his mental control, to the Scarlet Witch.
Namor decides that he has had enough of fighting for the day, so he starts to head back to his kingdom when he is attacked by Magneto and his giant magnet. The Sub-Mariner overcomes the beating he is taking and destroys the magnet. The X-Men watch as the Sub-Mariner withdraws back to his kingdom, then observe Magneto and the rest of the Brotherhood retreat in their own jet plane.
Uncanny X-Men #7
Professor Xavier takes a photograph of his students during their graduation. Afterward, he informs them that they must continue their fight against evil mutants without him, while he takes care of some unfinished business. He tells his students that he will select a new leader from amongst them soon.
Across town at another mansion, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants regroups. Mastermind and the Scarlet Witch are the first to arrive. Mastermind offers the Scarlet Witch a life of luxury, but she refuses since she cannot stand him. Magneto and the rest of the group arrive.
Back at the school, Professor Xavier asks Cyclops to accompany him to a previously off-limits section of the school. There he shows Cyclops his invention, Cerebro, which is used to detect mutant brainwave activity. Cyclops wonders why a telepath such as Professor Xavier would need such a device, so Professor Xavier informs him that it is intended to be used by the new leader of the X-Men, Cyclops. Cyclops questions his mentor's decision, considering Angel's aggressiveness and Beast's intelligence, so Professor Xavier informs him that it is because of Cyclops' leadership abilities. The next morning, the X-Men awaken to learn that Professor Xavier has already departed. They congratulate Scott on becoming their new leader. The group goes to New York City that night to celebrate, but Scott refuses, saying that he has to stay and monitor Cerebro.
At a carnival, Magneto seeks out the Blob, suspecting that he is a mutant, due to his inability to be moved by an elephant or a cannonball. Magneto tries to perform a mind probe of the Blob, but is stopped by a mental block put on him by Professor Xavier. Suddenly the Blob's manager appears and tries to fend off Magneto, not wanting him to talk to his client. Magneto orders the Brotherhood to attack the carnival workers. They all run off, leaving Magneto alone with the Blob. Magneto orders the Blob to join the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
At first the Blob refuses and attacks Magneto. Magneto then magnetically lifts pipes from under the ground, hurling the Blob through the air. The force of impact from landing loosens the mental block in his mind, and his memory returns. Wanting revenge against the X-Men, the Blob agrees to join the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
At the mansion, Cerebro's alarm suddenly goes off, alerting Cyclops to the Blob's recent activities. Cyclops tries to contact the rest of the X-Men, successfully reaching Warren. Warren gathers Hank and Bobby so they can meet back up with Scott and Jean.
Magneto challenges the X-Men to a fight at an abandoned factory. Cyclops' leadership skills quickly show, as he leads the X-Men in successful counter attacks to everything that the evil mutants throw at them, including missiles. With the X-Men standing together, Magneto fires a second round of missiles at the group, even though the Blob is standing next to them.
The X-Men hide behind the bulky villain and let him take the full force of the missiles. Magneto orders the rest of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to retreat, seeing that his plans have failed. The X-Men offer to help the Blob, since his teammates abandoned him. The Blob refuses, telling them that he's fed up with fighting other people's fights, and that he just wants to return to the carnival.
Uncanny X-Men #8
Cyclops watches over the X-Men's latest training session. He helps Iceman develop his powers, including making his body colder, which in turn makes him appear icier and more transparent, rather than a snowman. Following the tough workouts, Cyclops gives the group the rest of the day off. Jean tries to convince Cyclops to spend the rest of the afternoon with them, but he refuses, saying that he has too much work to do. From her thoughts, it becomes obvious that Jean has fallen in love with Scott.
Heading for the coffee shop where they met Zelda, Hank and Bobby come across a child in danger of falling off a roof. Without any time to change into costume, Hank climbs up the side of the building and rescues the child. When he reaches the ground again, he and Bobby are attacked by the onlooking mob, which is angered that there was a mutant hiding among them. Hank and Bobby escape and head back to the mansion.
Infuriated, Hank tells Scott that he is quitting the X-Men. Scott does not know what to do, so he contacts Professor Xavier. Professor Xavier tells him that he cannot do anything about it, and continues on his quest to find Lucifer.
A week later, Hank has established himself as a pro wrestler named The Beast. His latest opponent is Unus, the Untouchable. Hank tries to attack Unus, but every time he attempts to strike the man, he is stopped by an invisible forcefield. Hank suddenly recognizes Mastermind in the audience, then realizes that the two men somehow know each other.
After the fight, Mastermind heads into Unus' locker room. Unus inquires whether he can join the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants yet. Mastermind informs him that due to the failures of Namor and the Blob recently, Unus must prove his loyalty before receiving membership. He informs Unus that he must find or even defeat one of the X-Men.
Unus has no idea how to find the X-Men, so he goes for a walk. He sees a bank robbery and thinks that he could put the money to better use, and robs the bank robbers. The X-Men are nearby and assume Unus is the bank robber and confront him. The four X-Men are unable to figure out how to fight a man who can't be touched. Unus grabs Angel, who tries to fly off. Unus holds onto him, knowing that the X-Men are not killers. Angel eventually sets Unus down on a nearby rooftop.
The X-Men return to the mansion to plot a strategy and find Beast in the lab, working on a strange device. Beast informs them that the device is designed to increase Unus' powers. The X-Men think Beast has joined with Magneto and attack him. Beast tries to explain his plan, but the others won't listen, so he grabs his device and jumps out the window. At the gym, Beast uses the device on Unus, increasing his powers. The X-Men arrive too late.
At first, Unus is very pleased with his powers, but quickly realizes he can no longer control them. He learns that he can't touch anything, not even his cigarettes and food. The X-Men find him in a restaurant trying to grab food because he is starving, but his power thwarts him. Beast makes a deal with Unus to reverse the device's effects, as long as he does not join the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Unus agrees and returns to his wrestling career after being treated, and Beast returns to the X-Men.
Uncanny X-Men #9
In the Northern Atlantic, a freighter is on a collision course with an iceberg. Suddenly, two red beams of light shoot out from the front of the ship and destroy the iceberg. Scott Summers and the rest of the X-Men head back to their cabin before anyone can see where the strange light came from. The X-Men attend to Scott who became weary after having to use his powers so rigorously. Scott explains to the other X-Men that Professor Xavier had told him they had a mission in Europe.
Suddenly another transmission from Professor Xavier comes in, telling his students that he has located his foe, Lucifer in a cave in the Balkans. He tells the X-Men that he wants them to come to the cave. If he is unable to stop Lucifer, they can finish him off. Professor Xavier enters the cave, but is engulfed by a cyclone that places him in front of Lucifer. Professor Xavier pulls a gun on Lucifer, but learns that if he pulls the trigger the world will be doomed.
The X-Men arrive in a Bavarian village. The Avengers arrive just behind them because they are investigating strange impulses detected by Thor's hammer. Lucifer reveals to Professor Xavier that he has built a thermal detonator attached to his heartbeat. If he is harmed or killed, it will blow up, causing worldwide damage. Lucifer knows that the X-Men have arrived in Europe, so he fires an ionic ray at them. Professor Xavier warns his students of the incoming ray, and they dodge it. He tells the X-Men of Lucifer's bomb, and that Lucifer cannot be harmed. The Avengers arrive and want to destroy the menace detected by Thor's hammer. A battle between the two groups ensues.
Lucifer laughs after seeing the two groups fighting each other. Professor Xavier uses the distraction to mentally knock Lucifer unconscious without changing his heartbeat, and then using telepathy, alerts Thor to the truth. Thor informs the rest of the Avengers of Lucifer's defeat, and they depart.
Professor Xavier leads the X-Men to him so they can defuse the bomb. He detects the bomb's weak point and orders Cyclops to use his power full force but in a hairline beam on the bomb's fuse, shattering it. The bomb is diffused and Xavier mentally wakes up Lucifer. Lucifer tells them that it took him 10 years to make the bomb, and Xavier says that he lost the permanent use of his legs, but Lucifer only suffered a minor setback. The X-Men leave Lucifer alone in his own cave, telling him that there is no place on Earth he can go to escape the retribution of the X-Men.
Uncanny X-Men #10
Iceman, Beast and Marvel Girl are training in the Danger Room when Scott enters the room to commend them on the mastery of their abilities. Scott notices that Warren is not present in the training session. Fearing something is wrong, the X-Men search the mansion to find out where their teammate is and find Warren -- out of uniform -- glued to the television. He is watching a news report of an Antarctic expedition.
The expedition has found one of their numbers missing, however they find the mission scientist and a startling discovery: the missing man has been rescued by a strange muscle bounded human wearing only a loincloth and accompanied by a saber-tooth tiger. The large and heavily armed convoy opens fire on the jungle man and his pet attack the other scientists before vanishing in the winter wastelands.
Theorizing that this strange man might be a fellow mutant, the X-Men tell the news to Professor X, who consents his students to go to Antarctica by themselves to investigate. While the others cheerful rush out of the Professor's study, excited to be heading out on another adventure, Scott stays behind wondering if the team is ready to go out alone. The Professor reassures and gives Cyclops his blessing that the team is ready to go out on the field without the Professor's physical presence and supervision and commends Scott for his leadership skills.
Sometime later, the X-Men arrive in Antarctica and travel across the frozen wastes until they arrive at the location of the jungle man's attack. Investigating further on foot, they uncover a crack in the ice, which Cyclops blasts open wider with his optic blast. The team finds a hidden tunnel and journeys into what appears to be an ice cavern. Along the way, they come across dinosaur bones that are impossibly young. At the end of the tunnel, they find a prehistoric jungle in the middle of the Antarctic.
Flying up to scope the place out, Angel soon finds himself targeted by a swarm of pterodactyls. However a combination of Angel's fast flying and Cyclops' optic beams send the creatures fleeing. To the X-Men's surprise, they find many prehistoric animals long thought extinct in this strange "Savage Land." Angel scouts ahead further while the rest of the team explores on the ground.
The X-Men are soon attacked by the Swamp Men, a tribe of hunters who have superior hunting skills that ride on giant bird beasts. They easily get the drop on the X-Men, knocking most of their numbers out with swamp gas. They also kidnap Marvel Girl! Witnessing the battle, the jungle man -- named Ka-Zar -- goes to the X-Men's rescue with the aid of his tiger, Zabu.
When the X-Men revive, Beast thanks Ka-Zar and puts a hand on him, which offends the jungle man enough to prompt him to attack the X-Men. The heroes are then forced to subdue their savior, however their fight is quickly ended when Ka-Zar's mortal enemy, the ape man Maa-Gor, appears. Ka-Zar easily defeats him in single combat and sends him fleeing. After the battle, Ka-Zar agrees to help the X-Men free Marvel Girl from the Swamp People.
Elsewhere, Angel continues scouting the Savage Land when he is also captured by the Swamp Men and brought back to their village. There, he is reunited with Jean and the two are brought to the top of a pyramid where they are to be sacrificed to a deadly Tyrannosaurus Rex. The sight of the creature frightens Jean so badly that she cannot concentrate enough to use her telekinetic powers to free herself and Angel from their bindings.
The other X-Men, Ka-Zar and Zabu soon arrive outside the Swamp Men's village and mount an attack, smashing through their defenses with relative ease. As this is going on, Jean manages to compose herself to use her telekinetic powers to trip up the T-Rex and free herself and Angel. Able to fly away, Warren grabs Jean and the two join their comrades in battle. Ka-Zar then helps the X-Men dodge the Swamp Men's death traps and calls a herd of charging mastodons to smash through the wooden fence that surrounds the village.
With the defenses smashed, the X-Men, Ka-Zar and Zabu make short work of the Swamp Men, sending them fleeing into the jungle in defeat. After the battle, they find Hank embarrassingly caught on a giant pole and save him. Later, Cyclops thanks Ka-Zar for his help and offers him to accompany them back to the surface world, however Ka-Zar rejects the offer telling the X-Men that the Savage Land is his home.
The X-Men part with Ka-Zar as friends and return to the surface, leaving Ka-Zar behind. After the X-Men have left, Ka-Zar commands the mastodons to cover up the entrance to the Savage Land with boulders to prevent intruders from the outside world from coming to the Savage Land ever again.
Uncanny X-Men #11
Professor X calls the X-Men when his Radar-Image Beam picks up the energy signature of a very powerful being. However, before they can get a better analysis, the being suddenly disappears in a flashing explosion. Suspecting this being to be a super-powerful mutant, the Professor and Scott concern themselves with the potential of such a powerful being. Iceman and Beast however, don't take this finding very seriously and begin horsing around again, prompting Marvel Girl to use her powers to break up their rough housing. This leads to the Professor scolding Bobby for inciting the situation.
Elsewhere in New York, the object of the X-Men's concern is a strange man in a suit that has taken up residence in a rooming house. When the landlord comes by and demands a full week's rent in cash up front, the man pulls a large wad of money out of his coat and hands it to her. Deciding to explore the city, this man, this Stranger, walks in the very air over the city to avoid traffic. The citizens of New York are shocked to find that there is a man walking right up in the sky. Not wishing to attract anymore undue attention, the Stranger flees the scene, but feels himself compelled to enter a particular building.
Walking through the wall, the Stranger finds Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants inside waiting for him. As the Stranger meets the Brotherhood, the X-Men search the city for this supposed new Mutant. As Angel scours the sky, the rest of the X-Men search the ground. Scott searches the streets and attracts the unwanted attention of the police who find is skulking about suspicious. In a scuffle, Scott's ruby quartz glasses are removed causing his optic beams to fire wildly, smashing a fire hydrant and one of the officers guns. Scott is then pulled out of the harry situation by Beast and Iceman who reunite him with Marvel Girl. The group then decides to continue looking for their query together.
Back in the building where the Stranger has met with the Brotherhood, the Stranger is offered membership with Magneto's team of evil Mutants. When the Stranger asks why he should join up with Magneto's group, the Master of Magnetism gives the Stranger a show of power, with Magneto binding him with metal and Mastermind using his illusions.
However, the Stranger sees through the illusion and breaks free of Magneto's binding. He decides to show his own power and fires a bolt of energy at Mastermind which converts the illusion casting mutant into solid matter. His weight increased causing him to break through the floors of the building, alerting the store manager a floor below to call for help.
This alarm attracts the attention of the X-Men who go to investigate and they find the Stranger with their mortal foes. Magneto orders Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch to attack the X-Men. Quicksilver strikes first, however he is quickly stopped when Iceman coats him with ice. Wanda then counter attacks with her hex bolts which trip up both Beast and Iceman. Angel attempts to get close to the Stranger but finds himself repelled by a magnetic barrier put up by Magneto.
Growing tired, the Stranger decides to leave, turning into vortex to escape. Magneto wishes to go with him and is allowed, so he (followed by the ever loyal Toad) enters the vortex and it phases through the wall, eluding the X-Men. Cyclops and the others go to lend Iceman and Beast a helping hand, putting a stop to the Scarlet Witch's attack.
Freeing Quicksilver from his frozen bond, the two Brotherhood members realize that they have been abandoned by Magneto. Cyclops offers them a chance to join the X-Men and help them stop Magneto, however the two Mutant siblings decline, having had enough of the constant conflict and leave, vowing to one day return.
Meanwhile, the Stranger has taken Magneto and Toad to a secluded spot, impressing Magneto with his abilities. The Stranger has a shock for Magneto though: He reveals that he is not a mutant and that he intends to subjugate them with his power. Suddenly, the Stranger grows in size and envelops both Magneto and Toad in an anti-magnetic membrane. While at the X-Mansion, Professor X examines the transformed body of Mastermind and is shocked to find that he is alive but his molecules have been transformed into dense matter. Deciding that this Stranger is a potentially bigger menace than Magneto, the Professor gathers the X-Men and they fly out in their helicopter to find this being before he can act out again.
The X-Men find the forest where the Stranger had taken Toad and Magneto and find the two evil mutants still bound. The Stranger then appears and reveals his true form, telling them that he is a stranger from beyond the stars. Telling the X-Men that he has developed an interest in human mutation, he teleports away with Magneto and Toad so that he might examine this phenomenon on his own world. The Stranger leaves the X-Men with the police arriving, prompting the outlaw heroes to flee the scene as quickly as possible.
Later that day, Cyclops and Professor X are in the Professor's study where the Professor removes the place cards of Magneto, Toad and Mastermind of the list of mutants on Cerebro that might pose a threat. Suddenly, the cerebro alarm goes off warning the Professor and Cyclops of a coming threat that is heading right toward them.

Uncanny X-Men #12

Cerebro is calling out an intruder alert prompting the X-Men to don their uniforms and come to the Professor's study to learn who this mysterious intruder is. Telling his charges that whoever is approaching the mansion is extremely powerful, he sends the group out to set up defenses including an ice wall, live-wire lined trench and fence posts rigged with grenades. When the X-Men return to the Professor, they are shocked to learn that their attacker is none other than Xavier's own brother.
The Professor tells his X-Men that his father was a nuclear research scientist who was accidentally killed during a nuclear bomb test in the New Mexico desert. During his father's funeral, Kurt Marko, a fellow scientist, would come to comfort Xavier's mother. However, the young Charles knew of his less than noble intentions to take his mother and his father's wealth, position, and property; three things that Marko had become envious of.
Shortly thereafter, Kurt moved into the Xavier mansion and married Charles’s mother. Kurt became a ruthless and verbally abusive step-parent and shunned his new family for his work. During this time Kurt's true motives would come out. One day, Kurt was thrown into a fury when his own son from a previous marriage, Cain, came to the Xavier Mansion after yet another expulsion from school. Cain turned out to be a cruel tormentor to young Charles.
The Professor's narrative is interrupted when Cain's advancement on the mansion progresses, easily smashing through the ice wall put up by Iceman, much to the X-Men's surprise. Charles continues the story of his youth: He would explain that one day he overheard Kurt and Cain arguing over money. When told that he would not receive a handout, Cain suggested that Kurt had orchestrated the death of Charles's father (an accusation that Kurt would flatly deny). Charles entered and confronted them about the statement. During the moment of tension, Cain tried to throw chemicals at Charles; however Kurt attempted to stop them sending the volatile brew crashing to the floor causing an explosion and fire. Kurt carried the two boys out of the blast. Having been mortally wounded in the blast, he begged Charles to believe that his father's death was only an accident before dying.
Cain has reached the second barrier, the electro-magnetic force field and live wire. As he is impeded by this barrier, Charles finishes the next part of his story. He explains that by his adulthood he found that his mental powers (which by this point have rendered him bald) could allow him to have an advantage over other students academically and in sports, however he decides against using it for personal gain.
His trophy winnings earned the ire of Cain who pushed Charles too far one day and the two got into a fight. Charles won the fight due to his mental ability to read his mind and know his movements. Some days later, Cain attempted to make Charles cry out in fear by driving recklessly. He only succeeded in making the car drive out of control and smash through a detour sign and down a cliff. Cain bailed out, but Charles wasn't so lucky, however Charles would tell his X-Men that he was able to erect a mental shield around himself to protect him from the crash.
Outside the mansion, Cain finishes with the live wire and breaks through the force barrier. He then makes it to the grenade traps and gas traps that were set out for him. He staggers through the gas traps and Iceman puts an ice barrier over the busted window of Xavier's study so no gas comes in. This allows the Professor to tell the final part of his story. Cain and Charles had grown and were enlisted in the military and had been sent to fight in the Korean War. Cain deserted while under fire and sought refuge in a cave. Charles rushed after him and they had stumbled into the long lost temple of Cyttorak. The greedy Cain grabbed a crimson gem that was left before an altar. Upon contact and reading an inscription, the gem transformed Cain into a hulking form. The cave began to collapse because it was being bombed from the outside. Charles escaped the cave in while Cain was buried under tons of rock.
Finishing his story, Charles realizes that Cain had finally dug himself out from the cave and sought out his brother for revenge. With the last of the outer defenses, the X-Men sealed the mansion’s front door with a near impervious steel plate and waited for Cain's next move. Much to the X-Men's surprise, Cain is able to smash through the supposedly indestructible steel door and easily knocks the X-Men aside. Revealing himself for the first time in years, Charles looks at his brother -- garbed in a special mystical armor -- and calls him a human Juggernaut.

The Juggernaut -- Charles Xavier's mystically enhanced step-brother -- has finally returned home to once more renew his rivalry with his brother. Charles attempts to protect himself with his vast mental powers, but finds to his shock and surprise that Cain's helmet protects him from mental attacks. The X-Men revive and with Marvel Girl’s telekinetic powers lifting up the Juggernaut, Cyclops blasts the floor out from under their foe causing him to crash into the ground below, giving the X-Men time to retreat back and try to come up with a means of defeating their attacker.
Xavier takes the X-Men to the lab and the Professor builds a device that allows him to amplify his mental projections and sends out a thought wave into the city to seek allies in defeating the Juggernaut. Meanwhile, Cyclops and Angel go back to where they last saw the Juggernaut, attempting to keep him at bay using Cyke's optic blasts. However, the Juggernaut smashes his way around the two X-Men and gets the drop on them. Neither Angel’s fists, nor Cyclops’ optic blasts are capable of stopping their enemy.
Back in the lab, the Professor manages to contact both Rick Jone's Teen Brigade and Matt Murdock, (who is secretly the hero Daredevil) however, neither can come to the X-Men's aid. To stall for time, the Professor sends Beast and Iceman to go help Cyclops and Angel, who are having a hard time keeping the Juggernaut back.
As Iceman and Beast join the fray, Charles attempts to get the aid of the Fantastic Four's Johnny Storm (Aka the Human Torch) who is out testing a new modified car with some of his classmates. Hearing the Professor's mental call for help, Johnny assumes that it might be from one of the Fantastic Four's many villains and dismisses it.
Although he is trapped in an ice block, the Juggernaut manages to break free and battles the Beast in hand to hand combat. The Beast only succeeds in getting his foot injured, however this does not stop the brainy mutant, who lures the Juggernaut into the Danger Room and activates all of its traps in the hope that it can defeat this seemingly unstoppable foe. The Juggernaut survives the traps and then knocks the Beast out when he throws back a rolling cylinder.
By this time, the Professor has finally managed to convince the Human Torch to come the X-Men's rescue and then goes with Marvel Girl to help the others. Jean keeps the Juggernaut off balance by lifting him in the air with her telekinetic powers until the Torch arrives. Johnny uses his flame powers to blind the Juggernaut and commands the reviving Angel to remove the helmet from the Juggernaut’s head that beast had loosened earlier in battle. Without his protective helmet, the Juggernaut is easily struck down by the Professor's mental powers.
With the battle over, the Professor thanks Johnny for his help. He wishes that the secret of the X-Men's headquarters remain a mystery and erases the memory from Johnny's mind and sends him on his way. Later, the male members of the X-Men are sent to bed to recover from the injuries they sustained battling the Juggernaut with Jean acting as their nurse, much to the pleasure of the men. Proud of his X-Men, the Professor tells him he has an award for them when they are once more able to be up and about.
Uncanny X-Men #14
The X-Men are still recovering from injuries sustained in their battle against the Juggernaut. The Professor examines them and gives all the recovering X-Men a clean bill of health and a much needed vacation. However, this would only prove to be a minor reprieve for the X-Men, because at that very moment, scientist Bolivar Trask is holding a press conference to denounce the mutant race as a menace to humanity that must be crushed. The press eats it up and Trask's paranoid rants end up landing on the front page of newspapers all over America.
Back at the X-Mansion, the X-Men change out of their uniforms and conceal their mutant natures; they prepare to depart on their holiday. Jean leaves with Warren, leaving Scott to wonder how he can compete with his rich and handsome teammate for Jean's affections. When Hank and Bobby offer an invite for Scott to join them, Summers declines and departs on his lonesome, passing the newspaper to Professor Xavier before leaving.
Opening the paper, Xavier is horrified to find Trask's epitaph against mutants complete with a wild story about how mutants will take over and enslave humanity. Feeling that this will bring about anti-mutant hysteria, the Professor calls the National Television Network to arrange a televised debate between himself and Trask over the supposed mutant threat.
That night on television, Professor Xavier and Bolivar Trask argue their points to a national television audience, sparking debate all over New York and around the United States. Bolivar offers to the audience a means of defense against the supposed mutant menace by demonstrating his new invention on Xavier (unaware that Xavier is really a mutant himself); his new robot enforcers the Sentinels.
Revealing that he has an army of these robots at his command, Trask begins to order the section leader, Sentinel #1. However, things take an unexpected twist when the robot suddenly turns on Trask, stunning him with a ray beam and declaring the Sentinels as superior to humanity. Subduing Xavier and Trask, the Sentinels wait for further orders allowing Professor X to send out a mental summons to his X-Men asking for help.
The first to receive the call are Bobby and Hank who are at Coffee A-Go-Go listening to poetry. They then spring into action as Iceman and Beast. Warren Worthington also gets the call while sitting down for supper with his parents, and excuses himself from the table to change into the Angel and fly off to answer the Professor's summons. Back at the TV studio, the Professor tries to keep the crowd calm with his mental powers but finds the strain incredible. The Sentinels decide to take Dr. Trask to their headquarters leaving Sentinel 3-R to guard humans. Iceman and Beast arrive on the scene and begin trying to take the Sentinel out of commission. They manage to knock the robot off it's feet but then Iceman is hit by a ray blast.
Scott, having heard the Professor's summons, takes a cab to the TV studio. He accidentally drops his ruby quartz glasses while in the cab, causing him to fire an optic blast through the roof. Regaining his glasses, he's chased by an angry mob who has bought into Trask's anti-mutant hysteria. Rushing into the studio and losing the mob, Scott changes into his Cyclops uniform and comes to Beast's aid. Beast is knocked out in their fight against the last standing Sentinel.
However, before Cyclops can deal with it, the Sentinel suddenly deactivates on its own and falls over. Mentally commanding his charges so as not to give away his secret of being a mutant and leader of the X-Men, Xavier orders Cyclops to revive the others and help the people out of the studio so that they might examine the Sentinel and find out what deactivated it.
The other Sentinels, meanwhile, have escaped with Trask as their prisoner. Flying away from the studio, they come into contact with the Angel. The Sentinels break off to attack him with their energy blasts. The Angel is able to evade their attack but is then drawn toward a speeding train, getting stuck on its roof. Coincidentally, Jean Grey happened to be riding this very train to answer the Professor’s call for help and was able to help the Angel to flee from his attackers. She changes into Marvel Girl to give Angel a helping hand back on his feet.
They join the other X-Men just as the Professor is able to mentally probe the mind of the Sentinel who mumbled the word "Master Mold" before deactivating. With his probe, he learns of the Sentinels secret base and leads the X-Men to go out and rescue Trask from his wayward inventions.
Meanwhile, at the Sentinels base, Trask demands to know why his inventions have betrayed him. They explain to him that in order to protect humanity from mutants, they must first conquer the human race. Taking Trask into the control room, they are alerted of the X-Men's approach through their sophisticated computer systems. Outside, the X-Men park the Professor's Rolls Royce in the location the Sentinel told them that its comrades were hiding; however, all they find is an empty meadow. Suddenly the ground rises up revealing a high tech base that fires laser beams at them, catching the X-Men all by surprise.

Tracking the Sentinels back to their base to save Bolivar Trask, the X-Men are caught off guard by the base's defenses. The X-Men find the defenses too powerful and Professor X calls for a retreat. Planning another strategy, the Professor has Iceman create a glider out of ice that he and Beast will ride, followed by the Angel, in an attempt to sneak into the base. As Cyclops blasts the glider into the air with his optic blast, Hank and Bobby are soon captured and taken prisoner by coils that spring out of the defense system. Angel follows not far behind; however, he's forced to retreat when a flame thrower almost sets him ablaze.
Beast and Iceman are then sealed within a cage and gassed so that the Sentinels can examine them further. Witnessing this, Bolivar Trask denounces the Sentinels’ plans to take over humanity in order to protect them from the mutant menace. The Sentinels take Trask to their creator and the machine he invented to create his Sentinels: The massive Master Mold. Master Mold demands that Trask pledge his allegiance to him, or he will use the weapons cache that Trask had armed them with to destroy half of the United States. When Trask tells the giant robot that the X-Men will stop him, it almost gloats telling Trask that it will examine the two captured mutants and defeat the others.
Outside of the Sentinel Base, the Professor attempts a different strategy on the Sentinels. Knowing that his mental powers have some effect on the robots, he exerts all his will causing the Sentinels controlling the weapons within their base to suddenly shut down, leaving the remaining Sentinels incapable of action until they get further orders from Master Mold. As Cyclops, Angel and Marvel Girl break through the defenses to gain entry into the Sentinel Base, the Beast is brought before Master Mold. Master Mold then forces Trask to use a psycho-probe device so that the robot might learn the origins of this mutant in the hopes of learning a way to defeat them.
Meanwhile, Cyclops and the others come across a bunch of deactivated Sentinels when they are spotted by one that is still active. With no orders on how to handle the intruders, the Sentinel tells the X-Men to follow it while it goes to get more instructions. The X-Men follow in hopes that it will bring them to its leader. As Beast recounts how his mutant powers gave him an advantage as a child over schoolyard bullies, the other X-Men find Iceman. Before they are able to free Bobby, they are attacked by a team of Sentinels, which they easily defeat. They then free Iceman and continue their search for Hank and Trask.
Beast continues his tale explaining that in high school his mutant powers made him a football star, attracting the attention of Professor X. He came to Hank's parents and offered to take Hank into his school to train him in the use of his powers. Hank, by this point, has not implicated Xavier's affiliation with the X-Men; however, Master Mold decides that learning the identity of the X-Men's leader would provide him the key to destroying mutants and he probes deeper. Monitoring the situation from safety with his mental powers, Professor X sends out his astral form to try and stop Hank from outing him as the X-Men's leader. With the probe stopped, Xavier attempts to exert his mental will on Master Mold. However, the massive Sentinel detects Xavier's presence and repels his astral form with micro-electric blasts, sending a weakened Xavier to return to his body.
The X-Men continue to fight their way through the Sentinels of Master Mold. Just when they think they have defeated all threats, the X-Men are suddenly pinned to the ground by a strong gravity ray. With the X-Men defeated, Master Mold demands that Trask create an army of Sentinels for him. He refuses and Master Mold orders his minions to grab hold of Trask and prepare to force him to do Master Mold's bidding.

The X-Men have been defeated and captured by the Sentinels leaving Professor X the only member of the group uncaptured. Having recovered from his failed attempt at trying to shut down Master Mold with his mental powers, Xavier witnesses the Sentinel base retract back into the ground, and decides to take a different approach to defeating this robotic menace. Deciding to go back to examine the deactivated robot at the television station, he mentally summons a passerby to pick him up and drive him into the city.
Meanwhile, the X-Men have been imprisoned in a transparent cage, pinned to its surface by artificial gravity. Try as they might, they cannot break free. When Master Mold gets all the information he can from the Beast, he deems the X-Men a paltry threat and orders the Beast be caged with his comrades. When Bolivar Trask asks Master Mold what he intends to do with the X-Men, the robot responds by telling him that he intends to eventually destroy them as per Trask's programming. Having realized the errors of his ways, Trask denounces this but Master Mold is unswayed and threatens to destroy a nearby town if Trask doesn't agree to build more Sentinels.
Back in New York City, the Professor is brought to the television station, where he first encountered the Sentinels, and where one of their numbers still lays inert. Secretly probing the robot with his mental powers before a perplexed police officer, the Professor learns that the Sentinel has a receiver unit much like a television set and that something must have caused interference. Looking out the window, he notices that the cause is a giant crystal on display atop the Crystal Products Building. This gives the Professor just the idea on how to destroy Master Mold and the other Sentinels.
Back at the Sentinel base, the other X-Men feel the artificial gravity of their cell weaken as the Sentinels prepare to put the Beast in the cell with them. Cyclops organizes the X-Men and when a small opening is made in their transparent prison, they attack and break free. The Sentinels are caught off guard and trip over themselves as the X-Men gain the advantage and take out their captors with their mutant powers. The X-Men make a break for it; however, the Sentinels recover and fire their stun beams at the young mutants, knocking them out. They are preparing to kill the X-Men when they suddenly collapse. It is because at that very moment outside, Professor X and the authorities have arrived in three helicopters carrying a giant crystal. Suddenly, the high tech Sentinel base rises out of the ground and a giant cyclone firing cannon begins to attack the helicopters.
Inside, the X-Men revive and are alerted telepathically by the Professor of the Sentinels's weaknesses. Rushing off to face Master Mold, the X-Men are startled when the lights begin to go out as some giant machine beneath their feet begins operating, causing fuses all over the complex to blow. This is because Trask has begun the operations that allow Master Mold to create new Sentinels. Master Mold harnesses powerful electrical energy, channeling it into a device that will construct eight new and more powerful Sentinel robots.
Realizing that with enough power, Master Mold can go on producing Sentinels forever and dominate all mankind, Trask finally decides that he cannot allow such a thing to happen, no matter the cost. Denouncing Master Mold one more time and finding that his life is sacrifice, Trask smashes a vital machine in the lab causing a massive explosion. The X-Men, just in the outside corridor, are rocked by the explosion. The heat from the flames causes Iceman to pass out, prompting Beast to rescue his friend before he gets crushed under falling debris. As the complex is falling down around their heads, the X-Men manage to escape the destruction with the help of Marvel Girl's telekinetic powers.
Outside, there is a close call as Beast carries Iceman out of the complex when the wall begins to crumble. Passing his unconscious comrade to the Angel, Beast quickly runs down the side of the complex by himself just moments before it explodes. Watching the destruction, the X-Men wonder what might have happened down there, completely unaware that Trask had learned the errors of his ways and sacrificed himself in order to save humanity from Sentinel domination.
With the threat of the Sentinels over, the X-Men are unaware that back at their mansion, someone lurks in the shadows waiting for their return to pose as a new threat to the group of mutants.

Following their battle against Master Mold and the Sentinels, the X-Men are given medical attention by the military, who commend the Professor and the X-Men for their assistance in destroying the menace. With Cyclops, Beast, and Iceman injured, the Professor allows them to be taken by the military paramedics to the hospital, but mentally cautions his students to protect their secret identities.
At the hospital, the doctors are unsure how to treat Iceman, who is in an unconscious delirium, prompting Professor to worry about this potentially being his first failure. Checking on the other X-Men under the pretext as a casual friend instead of their leader, the Professor overhears a doctor commenting on the fact that they could learn so much more if they knew who the young Mutant's parents are. Finding the Angel flying over a crowd of nurses checking the answering service with the mansion, the Professor is informed by Warren that his parents are coming to visit because they hadn't hear from their son in a while. The Professor calls the Worthingtons and tells them that he's on a "field trip" with his students for materials for a coming research paper. Although the Worthingtons are relieved, they insist on stopping by for a visit for only a few minutes. Concerned, not only over this, but his sense of dread, the Professor sends Warren back to the mansion to scout around.
Warren arrives at the mansion to find no trouble on the grounds, however, upon walking inside he is almost smashed by an axe which suddenly levitates out of the hand of a decorative suit of armor and smashes into the wall. Flying through the mansion, the Angel accidentally flies into a mirror and knocks himself out. His strange attacker watches, lurking in the shadows, boasting that this is the first of the X-Men he will defeat.
Back at the hospital, a doctor is almost done his examination of Cyclops, wanting to finish up by examining his eyes. Cyclops gives him a demonstration of his powerful optic blasts, explaining that he cannot control them. Finding no other problems with the young mutant, the doctor dismisses Cyclops into the Professor's care and the two walk the grounds discussing the state of the other X-Men. The Professor has lost mental contact with Angel and decides that Beast and Marvel Girl should remain at the hospital to watch over Iceman, who is still too injured to move. The Professor and Cyclops agree to return to the Mansion.
There they find no sign of Warren, and are suddenly startled when Cerebro's mutant alarm goes off. Going to investigate, the Professor examines his computer and learns that there is a super-powerful evil mutant on the premises. Before Cyclops can warn him, the Professor is suddenly wrapped up in the coils of a mental-wave distorter and sealed behind a transparent shield. Cyclops attempts to blast through it with his optic blast, but finds it redirected against him.
The lights then go out and Cyclops is attacked by their foe in the darkness. Unable to see his foe, Cyclops is easily felled in hand-to-hand combat against their unknown attacker. Back at the hospital, Beast has totally recovered from his injuries, which he shows off for Marvel Girl. Jean is concerned about the Professor and also decides to check on Bobby. When they find that Iceman is still in a coma, the two decide to venture to the mansion to see what's happened to the Professor and the others.
Arriving at the mansion, they rush into the front door and are shocked to find that the entire inside hallway has been coated with a friction-less surface. Beast suddenly slides across the room and into a specially prepared room. Jean manages to avoid the same fate by using her telekinetic powers. She is then confronted by their mystery foe, whom she recognizes immediately. Trying to keep him back with her telekinetic powers, she passes out after inhaling odorless sleep gas. Back at the hospital, the doctor caring for Iceman is called into the mutant's room because his pulse is getting weaker and he's becoming more delirious. With no other choice, the doctor decides to try a new experimental sulfa drug on Iceman and sends the nurse to go and get it.
Back at the mansion, the X-Men's mysterious attacker seals them in an enclosure of a high altitude balloon and sets it loose with the hopes that they will perish in the sky when they float up to 100,000 feet into the air. Releasing the X-Men into the air, the villain is satisfied that he has finally destroyed the X-Men. Shortly after, the Worthingtons arrive to visit their son; however, when they knock at the door they are greeted by the man who attacked the X-Men; none other than Magneto!

Uncanny X-Men #18
Continued from last issue....
Professor X, Angel, Cyclops, and Marvel Girl have all been defeated by Magneto, who put the team into a high altitude hot-air balloon, hoping that his hated foes would perish once it reaches its destination of 100,000 feet. Magneto revels over the victory, magnetically lifting the mansion out of its foundation. He then decides to use the mansion as his own base of power then sets the house back down to the ground. Entering the residence of his hated foes, he then uses his magnetic powers to destroy Cerebro. However, his destruction is interrupted when the Worthingtons -- Warren's parents -- arrive for a visit. Magneto confronts them at the front door and uses magnetic hypnotism to put them under his thrall, ordering them to go sleep upstairs in the upper bedrooms. Magneto then comes to realize that one of the X-Men -- Iceman -- is missing, and waits for him to return to the mansion so that his revenge can be complete. Magneto boasts how Iceman is the weakest of all the X-Men.
Meanwhile, Iceman is still recovering from injuries sustained battling the Sentinels. His doctor injects the unconscious mutant with a new medicine with a special device. It stops the boy's delirious rantings; however, if he will awaken remains to be seen. Meanwhile, high above in the weather balloon that might mean their doom, Professor X exerts all his mental power to try and overload the mental-wave disruptor that has been attached to his head. His ploy succeeds and he revives the rest of the X-Men. They begin to assess their abysmal situation and wonder how Magneto could have returned, after being taken from Earth by the Stranger.
Back at the X-Mansion, Magneto uses his magnetic powers to assist him in constructing a device that can duplicate body cells and create an army of mutant clones, using the Worthingtons as the source material. Probing the situation mentally, the Professor learns of Magneto's plans and tries to revive Iceman, who awakens from his coma and agrees to go out and try and stop Magneto. Marvel Girl is then instructed to use her telekinetic powers as an anchor, preventing their balloon from floating up any higher. The Professor then probes Magneto's mind so that he and the X-Men can learn how Magneto managed to return to Earth:
They discover that shortly after Magneto and Toad were taken to the Stranger's homeworld, Magneto began plotting his escape. One day, they were left to their own devices and Magneto -- taking advantage of the fact that the Stranger allowed them to roam his planet freely -- brought Toad to a location where a number of rocket ships had been collected by the Stranger and put on display in a museum. Magneto then used his magnetic powers to gain access to one of the rockets and after kicking Toad off the entrance ladder, Magneto flew the rocket back to Earth.
Bobby arrives at the mansion and spies on Magneto to learn what his plan is. Seeing Magneto creating Mutant clones from the Worthingtons DNA, Iceman sneaks into the room where they are sleeping and uses his ice powers to stop the flow of information, leaving the clones inert. Furious that his creations have not come to life, Magneto enters the room and attacks Iceman. Magneto underestimates Iceman's ability and Bobby manages to fight off Magneto's attacks, creating an ice slide to send the two of them out of the mansion.
Meanwhile aboard the balloon, the Professor comes up with a solution to get them back on the ground. He orders Cyclops to use his optic blast to poke a pinpoint hole in the balloon so that the helium inside slowly leaks out and they can then safely descend to the ground below. The X-Men safely land on the ground and attack Magneto together, however the Master of Magnetism manages to fight them off. Before they can renew their attack, Magneto magnetically traps Iceman and threatens to kill him if the X-Men don't cease their fighting. Iceman tells the others not to surrender for him, however Angel flies in and manages to pull him free from Magneto's grasp.
The X-Men and Magneto resume their battle until Professor X tells them all to stop fighting and surrender. The X-Men are shocked at this order and Magneto gloats over his "superiority" over the X-Men. However, this only proves to be a delaying tactic on the Professor's part as he has delivered a mental summons to the stars, calling the Stranger back to Earth to collect Magneto. Magneto flees the scene, with the Stranger trailing behind him.
The X-Men then rush inside to stop the machine (which has now begun to operate since Iceman's ice has thawed) before it can bring Magneto's slave Mutants to life. With the machine deactivated, the clones disintegrate and the X-Men destroy the machine.
The next day the Worthingtons awaken from their sleep with absolutely no memory of their encounter with Magneto, and join the X-Men (now in their civilian guises and with their secret identities protected) for breakfast.
Uncanny X-Men #19
The X-Men are in another training session supervised by Cyclops. The session is once more interrupted by Iceman's childish games and the session is preempted temporarily while Cyke takes Bobby down a peg. Cyclops then tests Hank's time record for dealing with a trap door test which Hank passes with flying colors. The Professor enters the room and applauds his students’ good work and tells them that after their great performance against the Sentinels and Magneto, and the fact that they are at their fighting peak, he has assigned them all a brief vacation. The team then off their costumed identities and go into the city in their civilian guises.
Hank and Bobby go to the library where they are to meet Bobby's girlfriend Zelda to join Hank on a blind date with Zelda's friend Vera. Hank has his reservations about meeting this woman, but becomes instantly smitten when he finds that Vera works at the local library. Along the way to their scheduled date, they run into Calvin Rankin, a young man who has been trying to get Vera to go out on dates with him. Jealous that Vera is out with Hank, the hot tempered Rankin starts to fight Hank. Hank pulls his punches, attempting to hide his mutant nature, however when Hank attempts to fight back he is surprised to find that Calvin somehow has powers the same as him. After he easily trounces Hank, Bobby attempts to fight back, but is hit in the face with a snowball by Calvin. Just then, construction workers notice the fight and attempt to stop Calvin from beating up Bobby, however Calvin manages to dodge a thrown brick and suddenly creates an ice wall to protect him from other projectiles. Surprised at these new abilities, Calvin flees up the side of a building, evading the arriving construction workers.
Surprised, Calvin recognizes his new abilities as powers that belong to two of the X-Men, and correctly deduces that Hank and Bobby are secretly Beast and Iceman. He then tests out his new abilities, hoping to use them to destroy the X-Men, however they eventually fade away. Calvin forgot that the skills he mimics from others fade away once he is far enough away from the people he mimicked them from.
Returning to the streets and going out for coffee, Calvin runs into Jean Grey while she is out shopping when she accidentally bumps into him. After rudely shouting at her, Calvin sits down at the table and realizes that he's also mimicked telekinetic powers and realizes the redhead he's bumped into is none other than Marvel Girl. Realizing the X-Men must be in town in their civilian identities, Calvin decides to follow Jean to discover the location of the X-Men's secret base.
Showing up at the mansion wearing a pair of ruby quartz glasses and a harness (so as to hide his mimicking of Cyclops and Angel's powers) Calvin shows up at the X-Mansion under the false pretense of "apologizing" for the fight he enticed earlier, and asks to join Xavier's school. He first mimics Professor X's telepathy when the Professor attempts to mind probe Calvin and finds that he cannot access his mind. He then meets all of the X-Men, mimicking their powers upon shaking their hands. The reception is less than warm, and Calvin realizes that none of the X-Men trust him. Allowed to be excused to go upstairs for a moment, the Professor tells his charges that he suspects that Rankin is up to no good and since he has deduced the X-Men's identities that they should change into their costumes and be prepared for an attack.
Sure enough, Calvin returns downstairs wearing a specially made costume. Calling himself Mimic, he tells the X-Men that he intends to defeat them with copies of their own powers. Mimic then takes down Angel with a combination of his and Beast's powers, deflects attacks from Cyclops and Iceman by using the opposites powers as a defense against the attacks. With one-on-one attacks ineffectual, the Professor orders the X-Men to attack Mimic as a team. Mimic manages to defend himself and fight the X-Men off. As the team of mutants regroup, Mimic then nabs Marvel girl and flees in a car, with her as his hostage. The X-Men follow in their helicopter hoping to catch him before he can harm Jean.
Mimic (now with all his stolen powers gone except for Marvel Girl's telekinetic power) takes Jean to an abandoned mine where Jean is surprised to find a hidden living space within. There, Mimic tells Jean his startling origins: He explains that his father was a scientist who disallowed Calvin to ever enter his lab. However, one day the defiant Calvin was snooping around his father's lab and accidentally knocked over a beaker filled with chemicals his father was working on causing it to smash open and cover him in a strange gas. Finding that he was okay, Calvin soon realized that the exposure to the chemicals somehow changed him. When in a school yard brawl with the school's boxing champ, he somehow developed his opponents boxing skills. Later he would find that he could absorb the skills of those who were around him, however his sudden bouts of perfection caused his friends to become suspicious of him and shun him.
Learning what had happened to his son and suspecting the people in town would eventually turn against his boy, Calvin's father relocated them to an abandoned mine in the hopes of working on a way to make his son's powers permanent. However, the experiments required a heavy use of power. The townspeople learned the source of the power drain and formed a mob, converging on the cave. Warned of their coming by his alarm system, Calvin's father attempted to bar their attack by blasting closed the main entrance. However, he underestimated the force of the explosion and this oversight cost the elder Rankin his life. The machine that could potentially make Mimic's powers permanent was buried in the explosion. After his father’s body was buried, the young Calvin vowed to get revenge on the world once he found a way to make his power permanent.
With his story finished, Jean properly deduces that Mimic intends to use the X-Men's powers in order to clear the rubble and free the machine that could make Mimic unbeatable. Mimic soon detects the arrival of the other X-Men when Angel's wings begin to sprout from his back once more. Rushing to the cave, Mimic then uses his returning optic blast to begin clearing through the debris. Meanwhile, the X-Men cautiously enter the cave and free Jean who would warn them of Mimic's plans.
Mimic meanwhile has managed to break his way through to his father’s lab and before he can open the door to the device he seeks, he is attacked by the X-Men, who have caught up with him. Mimic manages to fight off the X-Men and grab the Professor as his hostage to keep the X-Men at bay while he uses his father’s machine. However, instead of making his mimicking powers permanent, the device actually strips Calvin of this ability and knocks him out in the process. The X-Men, realizing the machine is overloading, carry the Professor and Rankin to safety before it explodes, destroying the entire lab. The X-Men then change Calvin back to his civilian guise and the Professor removes all memory of his identity as Mimic and sends the boy on his way, hoping that he can get a fresh new start. With the threat of Mimic ended, the X-Men return home.
Uncanny X-Men #20
Wearing X-Men costumes, Blob and Unus the Untouchable are holding up a bank so that the X-Men would be implicated for the crime. Neither the bank security guard or the police prove to be a match for the untouchable and unmovable duo, who succeed in robbing the bank.
While at the X-Men's mansion, Scott, afraid of his uncontrollable optic blast and the fact that he cannot bring himself to tell Jean his true feelings for her, decides that he must leave the X-Men. Without telling anyone, Scott packs a bag and leaves the mansion on foot. Warren, Jean, Bobby, and Hank are relaxing in the study when a news report about the Blob and Unus' bank robbery comes on the air. With the X-Men implicated in the robbery, the team rushes down to the Professor's study where Charles has just finished building a new Cerebro machine. The machine then reveals the identity of the two "X-Men" that robbed the bank and Hank recognizes them as Blob and Unus. The Professor senses a third adversary involved in this crime and attempts to use his mental powers to learn who that is, but finds that some force prevents him. To make matters worse, Bobby enters the room after failing to find Scott and hands over a note written by Summers explaining to the Professor that he left the team. Unable to devote the time to finding Scott, the Professor sends out the other X-Men to get ready to face their enemies.
Far away, the X-Men's unknown foe is none other than the alien being that was responsible for crippling Professor Xavier: The evil Lucifer. With his plan in motion, the evil alien muses over how he manipulated Blob and Unus from afar. Some time ago, his scanners detected the meeting of Blob and Unus when the two men challenged each other to see who would win: The untouchable man, or the unmovable Blob? The match ended in a stalemate when the two men found that their powers were evenly matched. After the bout, they were manipulated from afar by Lucifer's machines to team up and work together as crooks, robbing whatever they wanted.
As Lucifer continues his plot, Scott happens by the Blob and Unus as they are robbing an armored car. Realizing that the two evil mutants' actions would reflect negatively on the X-Men, Cyclops changes into costume and confronts his two foes. However, instead of being able to stop Blob and Unus and expose their frame-up, Cyclops only succeeds in enraging the crowd of people into a mob. In a fit of anti-mutant hysteria, the crowd chases Cyclops away, rationalizing that he is the most dangerous of the three mutants.
Watching the scene on his monitors, Lucifer is angry that their activities have only revealed one X-Man. However, he becomes satisfied when he spots the other members of the team arriving on the scene (minus Marvel Girl, who remained with the Professor). Beast arrives first and uses the device he previously used to increase Unus' powers, however, Unus has since become immune to the effects of the rays thanks to the secret machinations of Lucifer. The X-Men try their best to fight off the two evil mutants. However, the crowd and police impede the team's efforts as they fail to realize that the X-Men are fighting against the impostors and think that they are all in league together, much to the joy of Lucifer. The battle takes a pitch in the opposite direction when Cyclops returns to the scene and knocks the two foes off their feet when he blasts the ground out from under them. Unfortunately, this causes the two to fall down into the subway tunnel below onto a subway train that just happened to be passing by. With an angry mob chasing them, the X-Men welcome Cyclops back into the fold and seek a hiding place until the mob subsides.
Back at Lucifer's base, the alien mastermind is alerted that Professor Xavier is attempting to break through his mental screens. Prepared for this contingency, Lucifer prepares a gigantic weapon that fires a powerful disruption beam, attacking the Professor's mind, putting him in a coma-like state. Still conscious but rendered inert and weakened, the Professor telepathically orders Marvel Girl to get and wear his mental-wave amplifier so she can hear his thoughts. In doing so, the Professor learns that the mastermind behind this attack against the X-Men is Lucifer.
Professor X then tells Jean the story of how he first encountered Lucifer: Years ago, while traveling through Tibet, the Professor became investigated a walled-off city. When he is barred from entry, he coaxes the guards into letting him in with his mental powers. His presence in the town attracts the attention of its ruler Lucifer, who was monitoring the strange visitor. The Professor learned that the people in the town live in fear of its ruler and with his mental probes, he learns that Lucifer's castle has a cache of weaponry and machines from another world within. The Professor organized a group of villagers and tried to convince them to follow him in a revolt against Lucifer. They remained unconvinced until Lucifer attempted to kill them. With an army at his command, the Professor stormed Lucifer's castle and destroyed much of the machinery inside. Lucifer is then contacted by his leader and is told to abandon this base and to go to another sector that is key to their invasion plans for Earth. Fleeing the scene, the alien crossed paths with the Professor. Xavier attempted to stop Lucifer from escaping but Lucifer activate a trap: dropping a stone block on Charles, crushing his legs and confining him to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Lucifer escaped and ending his story, the Professor explains that part of his reasons for forming the X-Men were for the purposes of dealing with the threat of Lucifer, should he appear again.
Back at his secret hideout, Lucifer muses on how his devices have been able to sway the behaviors of an entire town and that soon he will build a device that will affect the entire world and put the entire human race under his control. With his plans almost coming to fruition, Lucifer calls his masters and request that they send Dominus, who is part of the final phase of their conquest of the Earth.
With the hysterical mob now gone, the X-Men leave their hiding place and return to the X-Mansion where they learn of the Professor's situation and Lucifer's involvement in the day's events. In order to face Lucifer with their leader by their side, Beast creates a mental-distorter which protects the Professor from the effects of Lucifer's weapon. With the Professor restored to normal, the team loads up supplies in their jet and flies off to the location of Lucifer's base to stop his planned conquest of the Earth, unaware of the danger which faces them there.

Uncanny X-Men #21
The X-Men are racing toward the secret hideout of their alien foe Lucifer when their ship is suddenly deflected by a strange force field. Flying away from the scene to find another way through, the team notices strange objects being pulled out of the sky into the mysterious base. Also witnessing the spectacle is Porter Mack, the owner of a Dude Ranch near Buchanan's Butte, the location of the disturbance. Feeling that the strange goings-on will drive away his customer base, he takes some of his best men out to investigate the disturbance to try to find some way to stop it.
Meanwhile, the X-Men circle the butte until the strange light source disappears. Upon approaching the butte, they cannot get any closer because it suddenly starts spraying a geyser of hot water at them. The X-Men land further away and spot a nearby stream that goes under the butte. The X-Men decide to investigate to see if it's a safe passage into their foes hideout. Leaving their plane, the team leaves the Professor behind as they begin to search for a way into the base. Along the way, they are spotted and attacked by Porter and his posse, who think there may be a reward for the X-Men since they are still wanted criminals back east. However, the X-Men make short work of their would-be attackers, sending them sprawling into the river below where they retreat. They seal Porter in an ice block around his arms and load the would-be attacker on a horse, sending him packing back to his ranch.
Continuing to search for an entrance, the X-Men make their way to the river and have Iceman create an ice raft for them to ride along. They follow the river to the underground opening and find themselves caught in a whirlpool. As the X-Men are swept away, the Professor is shocked to find that telepathic contact with his students have been severed. Before Xavier can do anything about it, he is confronted by two robots commanded by Lucifer who capture the Professor and carry him away into the base. Taken before Lucifer himself, the Professor is put at the alien's mercy with the robots inquiring if they can destroy the telepathic mutant. Lucifer refuses the request, telling the robots and the Professor that he prefers that Xavier lives so that he can witness as the Dominus super-computer enslaves the entire world.
Elsewhere in Lucifer's base, the X-Men are separated and Angel, Cyclops, and Marvel Girl get captured in a transparent cage. Beast and Iceman, meanwhile, are attacked by another Dominus robot that attempts to capture them, but fails to stop the young mutants. They manage to escape the robot but then run right into a metal wall that knocks them out, allowing them to be captured.
With all the X-Men his prisoners, Lucifer gloats over his victory. He intends to use the Dominus computer (operated by the robots) to activate a device that would strip humanity of their individual wills and turn them into slaves that would toil and work as slaves of the Quist aliens that Lucifer is a member of.
Meanwhile, the X-Men attempt to break out of their prison, to no avail. When the Dominus robots place Iceman and Beast into their cell, they fail to free themselves as they are pushed back by an incredible force. However, the X-Men manage to free themselves when Jean uses her telekinetic powers to operate the release switch on the cell's control panel. Freed, they ambush the one robot left to guard them and race toward Lucifer's control room. With the alarm sounding, Lucifer sends his robots out to try and stop the X-Men. The X-Men duck out of sight to avoid detection and then rush Lucifer.
They get a mental command from the Professor telling them not to damage the computer, however Iceman and Angel don't believe the command came from the Professor and attempt to destroy it anyway, but Marvel Girl and Cyclops stop them. This leads to a brief scuffle between teammates until they all decide to hold off on destroying the computer until after they have dealt with Lucifer and his robots. The X-Men destroy all of Lucifer's robots and with his robots destroyed, Lucifer stops the battle and rushes to his communication device for more orders. When the Supreme Leader appears on the screen, he informs Lucifer that with the ultra robots -- the only things that could operate the computer, destroyed, their mission is a failure. He tells Lucifer to return to their home planet to be punished. Suddenly, right before the X-Men's eyes, Lucifer and all of his equipment are teleported away.
With the threat passed, the Professor explains to his students that through his mental probing he had learned that the Dominus computer has a specific defense mechanism: it would redirect any force thrown against it right back at it's attackers, putting his students at risk, and thus the reason why he ordered them not to attack the computer directly. With all explained, the X-Men and the Professor depart the base to return home, unsure where Lucifer came from or if the aliens he represented will threaten the Earth again.
Uncanny X-Men #22
The X-Men participate in another training session in the Danger Room against the Professor's newest creation yet: The gigantic robot named Colosso. The X-Men attempt to attack it one-by-one to no effect, and it's not until they attack it as a team that they learn it's weakness: it's sensory eye. With the help of Jean's telekinetic powers and Iceman's freezing abilities, they defeat the robot. With the test a success, the Professor allows his students to go on another vacation since their last one was interrupted when they were forced to deal with Mimic. Warren asks Jean out to dinner before she goes visit her sister, and when they invite Scott to tag along, he accepts the offer, even though he knows Warren doesn't want him there, believing that Warren has won Jean's affections. With his students gone, the Professor allows himself a moment of weakness to break down and lament the lost use of his legs and to express the envy of his students mobility.
Things for the X-Men are going to take an unexpected twist with the return of Count Nefaria to the United States. With his Maggia connections, Nefaria is busy plotting another attack against the United States. Reading a newspaper editorial about the X-Men that questions if they are good or evil, Nefaria comes to the conclusion that the mutants are outcasts and decides to try and recruit them as his allies.
Bobby and Hank meet up with Vera and Zelda to go on a movie date, while Jean, Warren, and Scott have dinner together. The dinner ends with Scott declining Warren's offer to drop him off somewhere and the trio part company, with Jean leaving with Warren. In the car ride, Jean worries if Scott will ever express any feelings toward her. Scott is brooding on the same subject when he suddenly sees what he thinks is Marvel Girl leaping into Central Park and decides to go and investigate. Jean, after being dropped off by Warren, hears a radio report about the same thing and decides to go and investigate as well.
Changing into her Marvel Girl costume and traveling to the Park, Jean is attacked by Plantman, now an agent of Count Nefaria, who binds her in trees and vines and then knocks her out with a chloroform gas. As Cyclops (now in uniform) continues to search for who he thinks is Jean, he then spots Angel flying in the sky. However, this is a fake as well as Warren (still driving in his sports car) hears a similar news bulletin and goes into action as the Angel to investigate the park as well. He is soon captured by the Scarecrow, another minion of Nefaria.
Still out on their date, Bobby and Hank also hear a similar report and Hank makes an excuse to leave early to look into things as the Beast. Arriving in Central Park, Beast is easily defeated by Porcupine, also in Nefaria's employ. Returning to their hotel room, Bobby finds that Hank had not returned and decides to go out and investigate. Along the way, he finds an illusion of himself going toward the park and follows after it. He is attacked by the Eel, who has the advantage against Iceman, however with the timely arrival of Cyclops, the villain is knocked out by Cyke's optic blast.
They are then confronted by the Unicorn, who keeps them on the defensive until Iceman manages to seal the crooks head (and unicorn horn laser) in a block of ice. However this is a temporary victory as Bobby is knocked out by an electrical jolt from the reviving Eel. Cyclops attempts to knock out the Eel again, however, the Unicorn breaks free of the ice around his head and uses his powers to knock out Cyclops as well. The villains take their captives to Nefaria's freighter where they are locked up in the lower hold. Nefaria commends his minions for their work, but is angry that they had to resort to force when he ordered them not to harm the X-Men.
Meeting with the captive X-Men, he offers them the chance to join him in his latest plot: To steal the entire US city of Washington D.C. The X-Men refuse to betray their country by involving themselves in such a plot. Despite the X-Men's refusal to join him, Nefaria goes to the controls and prepares to carry out his plot without their aid.

Uncanny X-Men #23
Continued from last issue....
The X-Men have been captured by Count Nefaria, who had hoped to take in the young mutants as his allies, only to learn that they are truly heroes. Nefaria tells the X-Men he will give them an hour to change their minds. Despite this setback, Nefaria still launches his current plan: To steal the entire city of Washington D.C. Nefaria accomplishes this with a special device that traps the capital city under a clear and indestructible dome. The dome’s appearance spreads panic all over the city, causing government officials to call in the military from the Pentagon. However, no matter how hard they try and what they use, nothing can pierce the dome.
Nefaria then sends out his impersonation X-Men to the Capital Building to present his ransom: One hundred million dollars, to be paid within three hours. When the government refuses and guards attempt to capture the faux-X-Men, they are shocked when they suddenly vanish. They still believe that they were the genuine article for they don't know the exact extent of their mutant powers.
Inside Nefaria's base, the real X-Men attempt to break free with the use of Jean’s mental powers, who breaks them free of their shackles. As this is happening, the Professor gets a call from General Fredricks about what is happening and he agrees to travel to Washington at once. When attempting to contact his students, he finds that they are out of his reach. Back at Nefaria's base, Jean manages to telekinetically lift Cyclops' visor so his optic blast removes his bonds and then the shackles of the others. The Professor manages to get through to the X-Men and manages to give them instructions.
Meanwhile, Nefaria has been contacted by the government who agree to his terms, much to his delight. Impressing him further is the arrival of the X-Men who agree to join forces with him. Warning the group against a double-cross, Nefaria tells them of a failsafe on the device, that only he can operate the machine that controls the dome and if anyone else were to attempt it, it would cause totaly annihilation to Washington D.C. As Nefaria sends the X-Men go to collect his ransom, his previous minions, Porcupine, Plantman, Unicorn, Eel, and Scarecrow, all agree to turn against Nefaria to seize the money for themselves.
The Professor arrives at the military attaché outside the dome where General Fredricks tells the Professor of the X-Men's "involvement" in the ransom, and the Professor asks for some time to think things over. In reality, he sends his astral form into the dome to spy on Nefaria and learn his secrets. The X-Men are provided with an opening into the dome so they can collect the ransom. They head toward the meeting spot unaware that Nefaria's betraying minions are watching and waiting to strike.
The X-Men collect the money, but are sent fleeing when a trigger happy soldier attempts to shoot at them. They also attract the attention of an angry, brick throwing mob, that chases after them. However, the crowd is scared off by Porcupine and the other crooks that then confront the X-Men and demand that they hand over the money. As the X-Men and the super-criminals fight over the loot, the X-Men defeat all them all except for the Eel and Unicorn, who rush toward the case filled with money. The Unicorn then betrays his comrade by blasting him and running off with the money. Unicorn doesn't make it very far when he's surrounded by both the X-Men and the military. However, he manages to keep them at bay with the power of his unicorn blaster.
The X-Men keep the military at bay while they take back the money from Unicorn. Cyclops hands it over to Marvel Girl and sends her back to the truck that is waiting for them. Spotting the girl with the money, the regrouped villains try to give chase but are held back by a group of soldiers. Despite the fact that Plantman manages to wrap them up in vines, they are too late to stop the van from driving off with only Marvel Girl inside. The other X-Men, seeing that they are being left behind, are ordered by Cyclops to follow after it.
When Jean returns to Nefaria's hideout, she hands over the money to Nefaria who hopes to use the money to fund future Maggia operations in Europe. However, they are interrupted when a strange masked man enters the room who surprisingly operates the machine in just the right way to deactivate the dome without setting off the trap. When the other X-Men arrive, they are distracted long enough for Nefaria to sneak away, seemingly with the money. The mystery man is revealed to be the Professor, who explains that he learned how to operate the dome thanks to reading Nefaria's mind. With a special device that allows him to walk with lightweight, flexible metal braces, the Professor walked into Nefaria's hideout to deactivate the device.
The Professor then tells them that he tricked Nefaria into fleeing with a faux image of the briefcase full of money, created by Nefaria's own machine. At that moment aboard his ship, Nefaria thinks he's gotten away but is then confronted by the Unicorn who wishes still to take the money. To both men's surprise, the briefcase suddenly disappears. Later, they are both picked up by the coast guard whom the Professor had summoned.
The X-Men celebrate a brief victory, which is interrupted when Jean is given a letter that she had gotten in the mail. Reading it, she becomes tearful and tells the X-Men that she must leave the team.

Uncanny X-Men #24
Continued from last issue....
The X-Men are shocked to hear that Jean's parents have withdrawn her from Xavier's private school and have enrolled her into a more conventional school at Metro College in New York. The Professor gives her some books and a corsage as a parting gift and she is driven into the city by Warren with Scott accompanying them. The whole ride, Scott broods over never being able to express his feelings to her, while Warren muses how she will be attending classes with the Human Torch. Jean dismisses the idea of being "another super-hero" on campus, telling Warren that she is just going to be plain ordinary Jean Grey. Arriving at the building, Jean and the others are introduced to Ted Roberts, a student at the college who escorts Jean to where she has to register. As Ted leads Jean away, Scott believes that he's lost Jean for good.
While elsewhere in a wheat field, a new villain has appeared that will cause havoc in the X-Men's lives: The Locust. Armed in a costume fashioned after the insect for which he is named, he intends to create an army of gigantic insects to threaten the world’s food supply by sending them to eat all of the wheat in the area. His attack on farmland America not only garners the attention of the authorities who are stumped by the weird happening, but the X-Men as well who arrive on the scene to investigate at the Professor's orders. The X-Men track down the Locust's insect horde and battles them. However, the Locust manages to escape and the authorities spray the area with a crop duster loaded with insecticide.
Back at Metro College, Jean is shown around by Ted. Their attention are drawn toward Professor Hopper, an eccentric professor at the College, whom the students make fun of. Overhearing some of the student’s taunts, Hopper lashes out at them. Jean finds him familiar and Ted tells her that he was the top Entomologist until he was fired for his bizarre theories and he now works in chemicals. Returning to his lab, we learn that Hopper is really the Locust and that his experience with insects allowed him to create a device that can make insects grow to fantastic sizes. His plan is to grow insects to immense size, then "save the day" by destroying them, gaining the credit he has been searching for his whole career. He swears to get revenge against both the X-Men and all those who mocked him.
Meanwhile, the X-Men are busy examining one of the giant grasshoppers that was commanded by the Locust. They theorize if the locust is a mutant or not and the Professor tells them that Cerebro confirmed that he is just a normal human. Jean visits for the weekend and tells the X-Men of the strange Professor Hopper and how she is suspicious of his involvement. Xavier goes to Ryan Chemicals and uses his credentials to be shown Hopper’s work. Hopper is nowhere to be found but his boss tells Xavier that he has a mobile lab that he works out of sometimes. The Professor finds a map of locations where the Locust has struck and where he will strike again and sends out the X-Men to stop him.
While the X-Men battle the Locust's insects, the Professor (disguised as a wise old man) tries to convince the unhinged Hopper to renounce his evil ways; it does not work. The Locust grows even larger insects for the X-Men to fight but Marvel Girl telekinetically curls his antennae, which he uses to communicate and control his creations. The Locust no longer can control the giant bugs and they turn on him, thinking that he is a bug to eat because of his costume.
The X-Men destroy the insects and Hopper's lab and the Locust finally breaks down and listens to the Professor. He turns himself over to the authorities to pay his debt for the harm he has caused. The X-Men find out that the Professor has once again utilized his mechanical legs that allow him to walk in order to appear to Locust as a wise old man.
Uncanny X-Men #25
Professor Xavier and the rest of the X-Men are driving Jean Grey back to Metro College after a visit. Along the way, they come across an orphanage that has caught fire. Changing into their X-Men costumes, the mutant heroes work together to save the orphans within from the flames before fire crews can arrive on the scene. With everyone safe and fire fighters putting out the blaze, everyone tries to thank the X-Men for their help but the heroes have disappeared as quickly as they appeared. When they arrive at Metro College, both Scott and Warren take note of Jean's classmate, Ted Roberts, and how he has an obvious interest in her. Scott deals with the idea of trying to get over her while Warren has decided to seek romance elsewhere.
Far away in Central America, a man known as El Tigre leads some men to try and find the hidden pyramid of the Maya god Kukulcán. His guides, two mercenaries named Toloc and Ramon, make no attempt to hide their contempt toward their employer. After digging up the ground near the pyramid for hours, they finally uncover a stone chamber that holds the sacred gold of Kukulcán, a lost treasure that is said to be cursed. While inspecting the golden relics, El Tigre notices a glowing stone that falls out of a goblet. Unaware that it is the Sacred Pendant of Kukulcán and unable to identify the substance from which it was carved, El Tigre stows it in his shirt pocket so he can examine later. That night, as El Tigre sleeps, Toloc and Ramon initially plan to kill him but then decide to instead tie him up so they can force him to help them unearth the rest of the gold before they kill him. However, having been warned by a sixth sense, El Tigre is feigning sleep and he surprises them and himself when his spoken desire that they be entangled by their own ropes comes true as the ropes wind around the two men. With the two would-be killers now bound, El Tigre has them swear their loyalty to him or face death by machete. Later, while stoking the flames of their camp fire, the stone falls out of his pocket, as if it moved of its own accord. When he picks up the pulsating stone, El Tigre discovers that he can now read the Mayan hieroglyphs inscribed on the base of the pyramid. From the inscription, El Tigre learns the story of the Sacred Pendant of Kukulcán and that the part of that enchanted amulet carved from a magic stone that he is holding is the source of his new-found mental powers. When he further reads that whoever possesses both halves of the pendant will enjoy power without limit if he survives its dread curse, the power-hungry El Tigre decides that the full might of the god Kukulcán must be his, curse or no curse, and that nothing will stop him from finding the other half of the pendant.
A few days later in the United States, the X-Men are studying when suddenly the Cerebro alarm goes off, prompting the group to investigate. The Professor decides to go downstairs by using his leg braces, but their power supply fails. He is rescued from a bad fall by special metal tentacles that he had installed into the wall to prevent such an injury. Returned to his wheelchair, the Professor and the X-Men check Cerebro and learn of the coming of a powerful force, which may or may not be a mutant, but which is arriving in New York City.
Cyclops, Beast, Angel, and Iceman then travel to the city to investigate further, as El Tigre and his men are arriving in New York. El Tigre uses his amazing mental powers to compel a cab driver to take them to a nice hotel. As they are being dropped off, Scott spots them and gets a feeling of impending danger from the strangely-garbed men but dismisses the feeling, thinking that he's sounding like a third-rate fortune teller. When Scott returns to the X-Men's hotel room, he learns that the rest of the team was just as fruitless as he was in finding the source of Cerebro's alarm. Deciding to check the newspapers, Scott goes back outside but, while reading and walking, he accidentally bumps into someone which causes his glasses to be knocked askew. Quickly getting his optic blasts under control, Scott has to flee from a group of mutant-haters.
Returning to the hotel room, Scott arrives just in time to watch a TV news report about a strange brawl that broke out in a nearby restaurant. When the report shows as photo three individuals who did not participate in the brawl, Scott recognizes them as the men he saw earlier. Confirming Scott's suspicions that El Tigre is responsible, the Professor transmits instructions via telepathy to his charges on how to deal with the threat. He explains that he had been using his mental powers to track El Tigre and his minions after they left the hotel, fleeing ahead of the police who had tracked them back to their hotel. However, once El Tigre had arrived at the City Museum, he had suddenly detected the Professor's probes and blocked him from monitoring his actions any further. Despite this, the Professor still knows his location and he sends the X-Men there in uniform to confront El Tigre.
The X-Men arrive at the City Museum where they decide to split up and search for El Tigre and his men individually. The Beast runs afoul of animated suits of armor until he is caught up in one of Ramon's bolos and is knocked out. Iceman, while searching an arctic exhibit, is similarly tripped up by rope that is tied across a staircase and crashes into a brick wall. In a prehistoric exhibit, Angel is also downed when he is struck by a blow dart fired by Toloc.
Meanwhile, Cyclops has followed a hunch and gone to the Pre-Colombian wing where he soon spots El Tigre. However, before he can stop the crook, they are both surprised by one of the museum's security guards. El Tigre instantly uses his mental powers to command the guard to keep Cyclops at gunpoint until El Tigre can retrieve the missing half of the pendant. Finding it in a display case, El Tigre smashes through the glass, liberating the fragment he has sought out. Joining the two halves together, El Tigre is suddenly enveloped in a bright flash of light. When the light fades, he is El Tigre no more, as he is now garbed in ancient clothing. He announces that he is now the reincarnation of the Mayan god Kukulcán!
