Plot summary
Roger is preaching in the new church and notices that the MacNeills are absent. Claire, Brianna, Malva and Lizzie go to check on them and find them near death from the bloody flux (amoebic dysentery). Soon more in the village fall ill and many die. Claire also falls ill with a fever and headache. After she recovers, the Christies arrive and Malva accuses Jamie of seducing her and fathering a child. Jamie denies it, several others are potential fathers. Claire tries to get her to confess and she and Allan accuse her of witchcraft. Claire takes ether and passes out as Malva is crossing the fields, and wakes to find her dead in the garden. She cuts out the baby but it dies.
