12. Now You See Me, Now You Don't
The Liars receive a package containing four Magic 8-balls bearing their names, with a message that if Ashley goes free, "A" will come after them. Ashley goes free from jail after Travis convinced the police she didn't do it. Meanwhile, Aria gets closer with Ezra after a meeting. The Liars receive another package containing a child-sized coffin which contains a doll resembling Mona, followed by a text that "A" will hurt Mona and set the Liars up. The Liars later receive one last package, containing a saw with a threatening message written on it, saying a girl will disappear.
After some quick research, the girls decide that A is leading them to a magic show in nearby Ravenswood. When they arrive, Aria is chosen to be a volunteer for a magic trick. When Hanna and Spencer are distracted by this trick, A kidnaps Emily. The Liars follow Red Coat and discover that Emily is trapped in a coffin that is heading straight for a giant saw. While the Liars seem to be unable to open the coffin in time, Red Coat stops the saw and saves Emily. The girls then notice that there are two Red Coats.
Spencer chases the one that saved Emily outside, while Aria gets into fisticuffs with the other who is wearing an Alison mask. Aria hits Red Coat in the face, knocking off her mask and revealing CeCe Drake. CeCe gets knocked off from the platform, where CeCe and Aria have been fighting on. She lies motionless, presumably dead, but when the Liars reach the spot where she fell, she has disappeared. Spencer leads the girls to a lair she believes is "A's", where she had been led by the second Red Coat.
She believes it was Alison, because she is helping the girls. Toby finds out Melissa brought Wren with her to London. He follows Shana, while she meets Mona at a hotel and delivers some information. The girls do some digging, and find evidence that suggest that the owner of the lair is a man. When the girls find out that the lair owner, whom they still believe is "A", has also been following Ali, and thinks she will be at a Ravenswood Celebration taking place that night, the Liars decide that they should go find her before "A" does.
On their way, the Liars are stopped by Mrs. Grunwald who reveals that Ali is alive, and Mrs. Grunwald saved her life. Someone was after Ali, and Ali was phoning Mrs. Grunwald, asking her to help her find out who it was. On the night Ali 'died', Mrs. Grunwald had sensed Ali was in trouble and rescued her by pulling her up out of the soil where she had been buried alive. Ali was injured and in shock, so Mrs. Grunwald brought her to the hospital, where Ali disappeared when Grunwald went inside.
Grunwald tells the Liars to get out of Ravenswood as soon as possible because "he" is watching them and he hopes that the Liars will bring him to Alison. Caleb gets on the bus for Ravenswood to hack into the computers in A's lair, and the Liars decide that they should go to the memorial party no matter what. Spencer is also attacked in a greenhouse by Ezra, who is dressed in his World War I uniform, where she cuts his hand. Mrs. Grunwald tells the girls that one of them has been touched by the one Alison fears the most. This would suggest that Beach Hottie, aka Board Shorts, attacked Spencer and Alison. Caleb decides to stay in Ravenswood after he finds his and Miranda's names and photos on graves. Spencer's tires are slashed and Ezra suspiciously picks the Liars up. Once back in Rosewood, the Liars see Red Coat again and follow her to Spencer's back yard where she takes off her hood.

Alison admits that she lived with Cyrus in a basement while she was on the run. He stole money and belongings from her. He was also the one who gave her the scar on her leg. Emily says that, because the police don’t know about these incidents, Alison still has to let Cyrus go. Aria thinks that ‘A’ has a plan to reveal her connection to Shana’s death if Alison identifies Cyrus.
Ezra wants to talk to Alison, but Aria is against this. She believes that he will put himself in danger by involving himself in the situation. Ezra promises he won’t speak to Alison, but goes back on that promise when he sees her at The Brew later. Detective Tanner takes Alison to the basement where she lived with Cyrus. She identifies the location, implying the identification of Cyrus as well. It’s too late, though, and Cyrus was already released. Alison later meets up with Cyrus in secret. They discuss the deal they made: Cyrus would confess to kidnapping Alison, and she would help him get away after his release.
After hearing that Alison ID-ed Cyrus, the other four girls decide it’s time to cut ties with her and talk to the police. ' A' ending: ‘A’ is watching a dog show on TV. They fold a black hoodie and stack it with another. They also fold a candy striper pinafore.
11. No One Here Can Love or Understand Me
The girls are headed for the police station when a message from ‘A’ stops them in their tracks. A bunch of TV screens display photos of Alison visiting Hanna in the hospital after Camp Mona. The accompanying message, “We’re all in this together,” sends a clear warning: if Alison goes down, ‘A’ will take the girls down, too. It’s starting to feel like ‘A’ and Alison have very similar motivations. Emily gives Ezra one of Noel’s photos. It shows Alison at an ATM with a man whose back is to the camera.
Ezra later returns to Emily with another photo from the same security camera, but this one shows that the man is Cyrus Petrillo. Mona is invited on a Montgomery family trip to the theater as Mike’s date. Aria whispers something hateful to Mona during the movie, and Mona excuses herself. Later, Aria finds her crying in the restroom. Mona says that Aria got her sharp tongue from Alison. She warns Aria that Alison will turn on her without a second thought. Hanna notices that Caleb hasn’t committed to staying sober with her.
She and Spencer enlist Toby’s help in hopes that he will be able to get through to Caleb. Unfortunately, Toby’s intervention skills are subpar, and Caleb isn’t receptive. Unwilling to give up, Hanna confronts Caleb later that night, and he finally tells her about Ravenswood. Melissa has gone to London without warning, leaving Spencer a “goodbye” note and a video. In it, Melissa explains what happened the night Alison went missing. She describes seeing Spencer with a shovel, and later finding a blonde girl in a yellow top on the ground.
Melissa assumed that Spencer struck and killed Alison. She buried the girl to protect Spencer, but realizes now that she buried Bethany Young alive. Detective Tanner has started asking what the girls know about Bethany, and it seems like they’ve all become suspects. Knowing this, Spencer decides to share Melissa’s video with the others. Things are definitely getting messy, and to top it all off, Alison has agreed to a police interview.
12. Taking This One to the Grave
The police are hellbent on finding a connection between the liars and Bethany Young. Alison agrees to take a polygraph test, leaving the other girls to wonder what her story is going to be this time. They know just who to ask for help: Mona Vanderwaal. Mona concedes that her anger toward Alison has been unfairly directed at the other girls, and she apologizes. She agrees to find out exactly what Alison is telling the police. Mona hacks into the police computer system and downloads a video of Alison’s interview.
The polygrapher’s questions assume a scenario where Spencer killed Bethany to gain favor with Alison. Caleb discovers that Spencer has replaced Alison as the prime suspect in Bethany’s murder. This change was made just after the police uncovered information related to Bethany’s time at Radley. The group hatches a plan to get Bethany’s Radley files. Hanna and Caleb hack the building’s security system while Spencer and Mona sneak inside. Aria causes a distraction in the art room so Mona can snag a set of keys.
Meanwhile, Emily keeps Alison busy and away from their heist. They end up finding and stealing audio recordings of Bethany’s counseling sessions. The following day, the girls are at The Brew when Detective Holbrook bursts through the door. He arrests Spencer for the murder of Bethany Young. Mona goes through the recordings of Bethany. She learns that Bethany knew about an affair between her father and Alison’s mother. Mrs. DiLaurentis was bribing her to keep it quiet. Mona concludes that a jealous Alison lured Bethany to Rosewood the night she died.
She calls Aria to relay this information. Meanwhile, a figure with blonde hair and a black hoodie sneaks inside Mona’s house. Mona is just getting off the phone when the figure opens the door to her bedroom. Mona is shocked, scared, and cornered. Aria brings Hanna and Emily to Mona’s house where they find a disturbing scene. There are clear signs of a struggle inside, and blood is splattered everywhere. The police survey the area and determine that Mona Vanderwaal has been murdered. ' A' ending: ‘A’ replaces the baby Jesus in Emily’s nativity scene with a Mona doll. They open the trunk of a car to reveal Mona’s lifeless body. In a separate scene, ‘A’ makes a snow globe and puts photos of the liars inside.
13. How the 'A' Stole Christmas
Spencer is out on bail for Bethany Young’s murder, and her friends are hoping to find a way to prove her innocence. The girls are walking downtown when Mona’s lawyer approaches and gives Hanna an envelope. Inside is a map of the DiLaurentis house with Alison’s hiding spots labeled. Hanna thinks that Mona is telling them where to find proof that Alison is ‘A’. They decide the “Ice Ball” Alison is hosting could be the perfect opportunity for a heist. Alison has a vivid dream. Mona visits her from beyond the grave and shows her a memory: A young Alison finds two hidden Christmas gifts, each containing a yellow dress.
Alison’s mother insists that, if her father asks, she must say she only found one dress. Mona says this was the birth of the monster Alison became. The girls meet up at the ball. Once Alison arrives, Hanna and Spencer sneak away to search her house. Toby sits by Spencer’s bedroom window and acts as a lookout while they’re inside. Spencer finds newspapers that show Alison communicating with someone through personal ads. Hanna finds a fake passport, as well as a letter to Alison from Bethany. The letter proves that Alison invited Bethany to Rosewood the day she was killed.
Back at the ball, Aria and Emily are keeping eyes on Alison. Jenna, Sydney, Cindy, and Mindy seem to be members of her new clique. Aria sees Alison kiss Detective Holbrook. A little while later, Alison sneaks away to meet up with Cece. Aria and Emily are tricked by Cindy and Mindy, causing them to lose track of Alison. Toby texts Hanna and Spencer to warn them. Spencer hides, but Hanna is away from her phone. A black-hooded figure with a knife stalks through the house. The figure goes upstairs and Spencer follows.
She finds Hanna knocked out, but is able to wake her up. That night, Alison is visited by Mona in another dream. Alison sees a casket with her own body inside. She asks about the nature of her death, but Mona has no answers. She says no one cares about Alison’s fate. The girls and their partners celebrate Christmas together. A noise from the chimney interrupts the festivities. They go outside to find a message spelled out in lights strung across the Hastings’ barn: “Merry Christmas, Bitches. -A.”
14. Through a Glass, Darkly
The girls attend Mona’s funeral, but an empty casket makes it hard to get closure from the ceremony. Alison makes an appearance after the service and is met with a literal slap in the face from Mrs. Vanderwaal. Hanna seeks unorthodox methods of finding Mona’s body. She meets with Mrs. Grunwald, who uses a sentimental item to connect with Mona’s spirit. She says Mona is surrounded by darkness and earth. Spencer’s indictment is unsealed, revealing a witness statement taken by Detective Wilden more than two years ago.
In it, Mrs. DiLaurentis claimed to have seen Spencer with a blonde girl the night Bethany Young was killed. Now, Bethany’s family is trying to get Spencer’s bail revoked. Spencer pleads with Jason to admit that he lied about Alison’s alibi. Jason seems unwilling to betray Alison, and sends Spencer away. He later asks Alison where she really went on Thanksgiving. She won’t answer the question, but insists that she did not kill Mona. Emily has the idea to plant Alison’s DNA at the crime scene.
Spencer is hesitant, but ultimately agrees to the plan. The two are at the Vanderwaal house when they find a camera hidden inside a vent. It captured a struggle between Mona and her blonde-haired killer. The police show the video to Jason. He admits that the blonde in the footage could be Alison. The police prepare to arrest Alison as she prepares to flee. The girls intercept her behind her house and form a human barricade, preventing her from running. She gives one last ominous warning before the police handcuff her.
Spencer’s charges are officially dropped. Mike opens up about his feelings for the first time since Mona’s death. He is frustrated that more people are mourning her now than appreciated her when she was alive. Realizing she was one of those people, Aria asks to learn about the version of Mona that Mike knew and loved. Emily meets Paige at the airport, but the news of Alison’s arrest does not convince her to stay. The two share a tearful goodbye. The liars’ relief that ‘A’ has finally been caught is short-lived, as the tails of three fireworks form the letter ‘A’ in the sky. It seems that ‘A’ might still be out there while Alison tosses and turns in a jail cell.
15. Fresh Meat
Toby witnesses Alison looking absolutely defeated in jail. She asks him to tell the others that ‘A’ is still out there and wants every one of them behind bars. The girls suspect that Detective Holbrook has been helping Alison, and Hanna wants to talk to him. She learns that Holbrook has been taking care of his sick father and decides to take a detour during a college visit. When Hanna finds Holbrook’s father, the man looks perfectly healthy and doesn’t know the whereabouts of his son. The police are searching behind the Vanderwaal house when Toby finds a bloody knife.
He later tells Spencer and Caleb that he regrets not alerting the other officers to it. Considering Alison’s warning, Spencer and Caleb are worried that the knife was planted by ‘A’. They want to get rid of it. Neither side is willing to entertain the other’s idea, so all three promise to leave the knife alone. Ezra’s caterer quits last-minute and Emily offers to fill in. She wants to save up to visit Paige over spring break. Ezra initially agrees, but ends up hiring a professional chef named Talia.
Emily insists on sticking it out in the kitchen to prove herself. She and Talia butt heads until Emily breaks down and explains her situation. Talia responds with empathy and helps Emily fix her questionable empanadas. When Aria learns that Jackie Molina is the admissions officer at Talmadge, she writes an unfaithful e-mail expressing regret for her relationship with Ezra. Jackie reads the letter and expresses solidarity with Aria for falling for the same awful man. Aria gets her acceptance from Talmadge, but knows that ‘A’ will use her letter against her soon.
Jason stops by the Marin house on professional business, and Ashley asks him to stay for dinner. It’s clear that the two are both feeling vulnerable. They share a kiss and end up taking things to the bedroom. Spencer and Caleb decide to go back for the knife. They find it in the woods and burn it in Rosewood High’s walk-in pottery kiln. ‘A’ lurks around the school and even locks Caleb inside the kiln, but the pair are ultimately successful. Later, Toby confronts Spencer about breaking their promise. She tries to explain, but Toby can’t hear the details. In the battle for his loyalty, Toby’s new police job is edging Spencer out.
16. Over a Barrel
Aria gets a text signed by Detective Holbrook asking to meet up and explain everything. It's a dubious request, but she sees it as a chance to convince him to stop helping Alison. Aria soon finds herself on a wild goose chase. The meeting time and place change twice, and Holbrook never shows. The Hastings are renting out their barn to Jonny, a scrappy guy who makes his own tempera paint. He tells Spencer about dropping out of college and traveling the world. Spencer begins to reconsider her plans for the future.
Paige makes it clear that she is unprepared to date long-distance. Emily wears one of Paige’s shirts to work and bristles when Talia points out a hole in the shoulder. Talia correctly assumes that the shirt is representative of Emily’s relationship with Paige, and suggests she let go of both. Pastor Ted asks Hanna to meet him in town. He reveals his plan to propose to Ashley and asks Hanna’s permission. Hanna gives her blessing, then goes to confront her mother. She presses about whether Ashley plans to tell Ted about what happened with Jason.
Ashley dodges the question. When Ted produces a ring that night, Ashley panics. She does not give Ted a response. Mona’s stolen laptop is activated by its thief, triggering an automatic text to be sent to the girls. The message includes a set of coordinates that reveals the location of the laptop. Spencer and Caleb follow the coordinates to a storage unit with a heavy-duty lock and an awful smell coming from inside. They gain access by traveling through the building's air vents. Inside is Mona’s laptop, several bags of crime scene evidence, and a large, ominous barrel.
Spencer is disturbed by the possibility that Mona’s body is dissolving inside. They leave the storage unit as they found it, and Caleb wipes the building's security footage. Toby spies a text from Caleb on Spencer's phone that alludes to their recent felonious behavior. He presses for details, but Spencer is tight-lipped. Meanwhile, Caleb and Hanna discuss the contents of the storage unit. Hanna's next plan is to connect everything to Holbrook, but Caleb has bad news: the unit is rented in Hanna's name. ' A' ending: 'A' logs into Detective Holbrook's computer at the police department.
17. The Bin of Sin
'A' has decided to make Hanna their scapegoat, leaving her in a state of panic. Caleb corrupts the storage facility's data and dissociates Hanna's name from 'A's unit. The other girls want to tell Detective Tanner about Mona's laptop and let the cops do the rest. Hanna is unsatisfied with this plan. Secretly, she gathers the equipment she'll need to empty the storage unit. Caleb tries to talk her out of the idea, but ends up agreeing to help her. Aria shows Ezra her Talmadge letter, and he initially takes it well.
Upon reflection, though, he finds some truth in what Aria wrote about their relationship. Ezra says that Aria shouldn't be held back by him when she goes to college next year. Talia acts strangely at work, and Emily assumes she has a crush on Ezra. When confronted, Talia admits that she's really interested in Emily. Ashley wants to agree to Ted's marriage proposal. She officially quits her job at Jason's real estate office, intending to forget that anything happened between them. On her way out, Jason steals another kiss from her.
Hanna and Caleb break into 'A's storage unit, finding it empty apart from the mysterious barrel in the middle of the room. They are forced to abandon their plan to move the barrel when they run into Detective Tanner and Toby. Tanner looks inside the barrel, but neither Toby nor the audience sees its contents. Spencer sees that Mona's laptop is on the move and assumes that Hanna went rogue. She, Aria, and Emily follow the laptop to an abandoned ice cream factory where they find the rest of the evidence from 'A's storage unit.
On the laptop, a looping video plays of Hanna explaining her plan to Caleb earlier that day. 'A' shuts Aria and Spencer inside an industrial freezer, and Emily arrives just in time to save them from certain death. Spencer warns Hanna about the recording 'A' has of her. Hanna accuses Spencer of letting Toby know about 'A's storage unit, but Spencer denies this. She defends Toby's recent allegiance with the police despite taking issue with it herself. ' A' ending: 'A' lurks around the ice cream factory with a black light and finds hand prints left behind by the liars.
18. Oh, What Hard Luck Stories They All Hand Me
Preparations are being made for Alison's trial, and the girls are anxious to know what the verdict will be. They continue to grapple with the sudden disillusionment of their friendship. Jonny is creating an art installation for The Brew. Spencer is fascinated by Jonny and his work. She spends time with him, much to the disapproval of her mother, who believes Jonny's influence is causing Spencer to abandon her plans for the future. Talia continues to flirt with Emily, who mulls over her feelings before deciding to reciprocate. The two share a kiss.
A girl named Lesli introduces herself as one of Mona's close friends. She is staying in the Vanderwaal house and providing emotional support to Mona's mother. Hanna spends some time with Lesli to get a better read on her. When the two run into Mike Montgomery at The Brew, he sees that Lesli took a book from Mona's room. He is furious, shouting at Hanna and Lesli before storming away. Lesli reveals that she spoke with Mona over the phone the day before she died. She remembers Mike interrupting the call, demanding to talk to Mona, and sounding very angry.
Veronica is consulting Alison's defense team in exchange for insider information. Spencer snoops in her mother's work bag and sees Mike's name on the jail's visitor log. Aria wants to confront Mike about his recent behavior, but fears hurting her already-grieving brother. She secretly follows him when he leaves the house late at night. Mike drives to a lake and leaves a bag of gumdrops on the pier. He catches Aria spying and is angry with her now, too. Hanna discovers a secret compartment in the binding of Mona's book.
Inside is one of Bethany's Radley tapes. She and Caleb listen to the recording, in which Bethany describes an unnamed female character as manipulative and violent. On her way home, Detective Holbrook pulls Hanna over. He blames Alison for his recent suspension from the police department. Hanna confronts Holbrook about doing Alison's dirty work, and he denies his involvement in any recent 'A' activity. The girls need to look elsewhere for 'A's henchman, and Mike has been drawing a lot of their suspicion. ' A' ending: 'A' is frustrated to find that Bethany's Radley tape is missing from the compartment in Mona's book.
19. Out, Damned Spot
Aria, Hanna, and Spencer donate to their school's blood drive. Mike is caught looking inside the fridge where donations are being stored. The girls tell Aria to ask Mike what's up, but Aria hesitates. She doubts her brother will answer her questions, and fears what she'll find out if he does. The stress leads Aria to panic during a math test and copy answers from Andrew Campbell. Andrew confronts Aria about her wandering eye and offers to tutor her. Hanna is swimming in college offers, but tuition is a whole different beast.
Financial aid isn't granting her enough because of her father's substantial income. Tom admits that he plans to pay for Kate's private education. Having underestimated Hanna's prospects, he isn't prepared to do the same for her. Hanna calls her father out for his lack of interest in her. Jonny asks Spencer to help him with a "mural" he's painting at Hollis. While he works, Spencer reflects on how seldom she does anything for fun. It comes out the next day that Jonny's "mural" was really graffiti. Spencer is angry, feeling that Jonny tricked her into breaking the law.
Still, the experience did give her something valuable. Emily finds out that Talia is married. Talia apologizes for lying and explains that she and her husband have an open relationship. Ashley comes clean to Ted about her night with Jason. She is ready to accept his proposal, but he tells her he needs time to think. Aria answers Mike's phone when she sees a private call come in. The call is from the women’s correctional facility and it is Alison's voice saying the name Hank Mahoney. Aria answers by saying Alison’s name, upon hearing her, Alison hangs up.
Aria asks Mike who Hank Mahoney is, and he claims not to know. Later, Emily sees Mike withdraw $400 from an ATM. She interrupts Aria's tutoring session to relay what she saw. Andrew drives Aria and Emily to a diner where Mike is meeting up with "Hank Mahoney," whom Emily recognizes as Cyrus Petrillo. Mike hands Cyrus a thick envelope. The girls initially assume it's the cash, but they start to wonder if it could be their blood instead. Largely oblivious to the situation, Andrew scares Cyrus away before the girls can ask him any questions. ' A' ending: 'A' drips some of Hanna's blood onto the clothes that Mona was wearing when she was killed.
20. Pretty Isn't the Point
The girls find a necklace in Mike's bedroom whose beads spell out "I'm with you" in morse code. They wonder if the necklace is for Alison. Later, Mike interrupts Aria's tutoring session with Andrew. He shouts at her, warning her not to go in his room again. Talia's husband stops by The Brew. He realizes who Emily is, and his understanding seems to be that Emily is an experiment for Talia. Emily is hurt that Talia would think of her this way. She decides to end the relationship. Spencer and Jonny see their graffiti hanging in an art gallery, and the two of them decide to break in and reclaim the paintings.
The heist goes well until Jonny trips an alarm. Toby tracks down their getaway van and arrests Jonny, but tells Spencer to leave the scene. Veronica pays Jonny's bail before evicting him. Spencer is apologetic, but Jonny assures her that he will be fine. He steals a kiss from Spencer before leaving. Hanna signs up for a beauty pageant whose prize money would help pay for college. She recruits Emily to help prepare a dance number. 'A' fools Hanna into thinking that Kate is competing in the same pageant, causing her to botch the choreography in front of her coach.
Emily decides to compete in the pageant herself, promising Hanna the prize money if she wins. Andrew tells Aria that Mike left something in a tree behind Mona's house. Aria finds the tree and recovers a vial of blood from it. Mike appears suddenly, causing Aria to drop the vial before running away. Mike chases after Aria and begs her to let him explain. Before Thanksgiving, Mona had been siphoning and storing her own blood as part of a scheme to fake her own death. Landing Alison in jail for murder would earn Mona the privilege of knowing 'A's identity.
She could then come "back from the dead," exonerate Alison, and expose 'A'. The vial of her blood was a parting gift to Mike; a promise that she would return. With no sign of Mona in months, Mike is afraid that 'A' double-crossed her. One revelation sticks out above the rest: Alison is in jail for something she didn't do, and the girls helped put her there. ' A' ending: 'A' uses Mike's weight set before taking out a wrench, their intentions not entirely clear.
21. Bloody Hell
Aria, Spencer, and Emily visit Alison in jail. They tell her what they've learned and promise to help prove her innocence. Alison wants Mike to testify, but Aria is afraid of putting a target on her brother's back. She insists that, if they can find 'A', they can exonerate Alison without Mike's testimony. Veronica wants Spencer to stay away from Alison's case and focus on her future. She sends Spencer to London to meet with a professor at Oxford. During the interview, Spencer's bag starts leaking blood. 'A' takes credit for the stunt, suggesting that there are more surprises where that came from.
Spencer searches her luggage in a panic until Melissa's roommate, Colin, steps in to help her calm down. Talia decides all at once to quit her job and file for divorce. Feeling partially responsible for Talia's situation, Emily offers her a place to stay for a few days. Veronica visits Alison in jail. Alison says that her lawyers won't let her testify, and Veronica agrees that it's a bad idea. Alison's mind is made up, though, and she asks Veronica to coach her before she takes the stand. Aria and Hanna visit Cyrus Petrillo at the hospital where he is being treated for severe burns.
They ask Cyrus what he knows about 'A', and he writes down the name "Varjack." Emily is rehearsing for the beauty pageant when Talia stops by. The sparks of a relationship are flying once again when the pageant coordinator interrupts. She warns Emily that her friendship with a murder suspect could make her ineligible to compete. Talia sticks up for Emily, pointing out that Alison is innocent until proven guilty. Aria is using Mike's workout bench as a step stool when it breaks underneath her. Andrew notices the bench had a mismatched nut and bolt, and Aria knows that 'A' is responsible.
Concerned for Mike's safety, Aria seeks comfort in a kiss with Andrew. Ashley tells Hanna that she and Ted are officially engaged. She describes how they worked through their conflict together, and Hanna feels inspired to try the same with Alison. Hanna visits the jail, and Alison surprises her by offering the first apology. The two agree to give their friendship another try. ' A' ending: 'A' uses a $20 bill to bookmark Deuteronomy 32:35 in each of the jail's Bibles.
22. To Plea or Not to Plea
The D.A. offers Alison a plea deal: In exchange for her admitted guilt and the name of her accomplice, she will get a maximum of 15 years in jail. Alison doesn't want to give a false confession or name a fake accomplice. However, when she is attacked by a group of inmates, she begins to wonder if taking the plea could help her negotiate a move to a safer prison. Melissa and Spencer have a heart-to-heart about everything happening back home. Melissa says that leaving Rosewood gave her a fresh start, and suggests that Spencer could do the same.
Colin asks Spencer on an outing that looks a lot like a date. They go to the theater, get drinks, and end the night by sharing a kiss. Varjak's identity is still a mystery. The girls know that the Holly Varjak passport, along with the other evidence from the DiLaurentis house, was planted to make Alison look guilty. Ezra theorizes that 'A' hired James Neilan to pose as Mona's lawyer. Aria and Emily wait outside Neilan's office while Ezra tries to shake him down for information. Neilan won't budge, though, and Ezra leaves empty-handed.
Their plan is looking like a bust until they see Neilan leaving his office in a hurry. They follow him to a house in the middle of the woods surrounded by a tall fence. Emily makes it inside just before the gate closes, separating her from the others. Aria and Ezra look for another way in while Emily conducts a solo mission. She finds Varjak's name and phone number on a receipt in a trash can and watches a frantic Neilan pack up several things (a gun, etc.) before he leaves again.
The contents of the barrel from 'A's storage unit are identified as human remains. Detective Tanner strongly believes they are Mona's, and that Hanna is Alison's accomplice. Tanner's theory is seemingly confirmed when Hanna's blood is found on the clothes Mona was wearing when she died. The only option Hanna has left is to tell the police about 'A'. Before she can, though, 'A' remotely deletes their texts from all of the liars' phones. With no proof to show, Hanna is arrested. Alison sees Hanna being led to her cell, and when her lawyer asks for a final decision on the plea deal, Alison refuses it.
23. The Melody Lingers On
Alison's lawyer consults with her one last time before her trial begins. Ashley and Ted check in on Hanna, as her fate is also dependent on the verdict. Spencer realizes that Varjak's number matches the number in Alison's personal ads, proving that whomever Alison was communicating with shares an identity with Varjak and 'A'. Alison says that this person claimed to know who killed her mother, and that their messages stopped after Mona was killed. 'A' quickly shuts down the idea that Mona was ever behind the number by calling and playing a French song that Mona used to love.
While talking to Aria, Andrew seems to imply that Mona's death was a welcome occurrence. Later, Andrew apologizes and assures Aria that the comment he made doesn't reflect his true feelings. Veronica forbids Spencer from attending Alison's trial. After missing the first day, Spencer decides she cannot continue to follow her mother's orders. She cares less about what the public thinks of her and more about what her friends think of her. In the prosecutor's opening statement, he tells the jury that Alison lied about being kidnapped, that Mona knew the truth, and that Alison killed her to keep the secret.
The girls begin to panic because the first of his claims is true. Jason takes the stand to rescind his earlier identification of Alison in the video of Mona's killer. The prosecutor presses Jason about the change to his testimony, accusing him of doing a favor for Hanna's mother in return for the "favors" she did for him. The public broadcasting of Ashley's affair riles up Ted's congregation and puts some strain back on their relationship. The girls return to Mona's bedroom to search for more clues, only to find the place turned upside-down.
It looks like whatever Mona left for them, 'A' found it first. However, Aria realizes that 'A' could have staged the scene to trick the girls into leaving. Her theory is proven correct when Spencer looks behind the glass of a hand mirror and finds a note consisting of three cryptic phrases. Meanwhile, Andrew watches the Vanderwaal house from outside, and a crime lab analyst looks at evidence from the ice cream factory. ' A' ending: 'A' shreds paper evidence, including a social security card for "Paul Varjak", and uses the scraps to line Tippi's cage.
24. I'm a Good Girl, I Am
Lesli Stone testifies that Mona once wrote her a letter saying that Alison threatened her life. She also tells the jury about her suspicions of the other girls and Mike Montgomery. Spencer and Emily look for a way to confirm Alison's alibi. They track down a girl named Kendra who hid in the park on Thanksgiving while she waited out a bad drug trip. Alison's lawyer speaks with Kendra, but decides she won't be a reliable or effective witness. 'A' mails a severed cow tongue to the Montgomery house. Ezra gets Mike out of town by bringing him to his cabin, but Caleb accosts them when they arrive.
He urges Mike to testify. Ezra argues that Mike (16) is too young to make that decision. Mike steals Ezra's car, but his drive home is interrupted when an arrow pierces his windshield. Caleb and Ezra run through a Pathfinder Scout camp, dodging more arrows before finding Mike tied to a tetherball pole. They tell Detective Tanner what happened, but she doesn't take them seriously. Andrew is jealous that Aria is asking favors of Ezra, but he fails to be there for her when she needs his help. Aria looks at Andrew's yearbook application and is amused to learn that he was a Pathfinder Scout.
Hanna and Alison find creative ways of exchanging information, going so far as to injure themselves so they can talk in the jail's infirmary. They pass a note back and forth containing the three phrases from Mona's bedroom. Toby is unsatisfied with the level of responsibility that is being asked of him at the police station. Spencer hints at her recent infidelity, and Toby decides to get his priorities straight before he loses her for good. Alison takes the witness stand. Her lawyer demonstrates that she has limited strength in her right arm due to a childhood injury, while Mona's killer had no such limitation.
The prosecutor then brings up an archery competition that Alison won as a child. Her ability to finesse a bow and arrow seems to prove that her arm injury is just another fabrication. Alison later confesses to her lawyer that her archery win was illegitimate. The jury finds Alison guilty, and the rest of the liars are arrested as accessories. ' A' ending: 'A' uses dolls to act out a scene where a prison van drives to a castle.
25. Welcome to the Dollhouse
Aria, Hanna, Spencer, and Emily are headed to jail when their van comes to an abrupt stop. 'A' knocks out the driver and gasses the liars, rendering them unconscious. They wake up in their beds, but this isn't home. Frames are missing their photos, windows open to walls of dirt, and cameras watch from the ceilings. The girls reconvene in a shared hallway where a disembodied voice directs them to a re-creation of Alison's living room. Sitting at the piano is Mona Vanderwaal, wearing yellow and claiming to be Alison.
She brings the girls to a child's playroom where they receive invitations to "prom." Hanna tries to incite a prison break, and a loud siren begins to wail. It doesn't quiet until everyone returns to their rooms. Peter and Veronica seek answers from Alison, who tells them that 'A' is back. Without police support, The Hastings work with Caleb, Toby, and Ezra to conduct an independent search. Andrew remotely listens in on their conversations. At night, Mona explains that the dollhouse experiences short power outages on a consistent schedule. A long hallway has a vault on one end and an exit on the other, but neither is accessible within the time limit.
Anyone caught outside of their room will be tortured as punishment. Spencer mentally rearranges the blocks from the playroom to spell "Charles." 'A' gives Mona a gas mask, but doesn't explain why. The girls are forced to decorate for "prom," and Spencer and Mona are strangely enthusiastic. They rattle off a list of materials, secretly planning to build a device that will shut off the building's power. They disguise the finished product as a camera for Aria. Caleb offers Detective Tanner his expertise in exchange for access to the PD's resources.
He locates the missing van at Campbell Farm where the police find 'A's lair. They see footage of the girls, including Mona, in the dollhouse. The girls attend "prom" in dresses provided to them by 'A'. Spencer lures "Charles" out of the shadows, Aria triggers the power outage, and the girls run. Spencer goes to 'A's vault and finds a collection of childhood memories, including a video of Mrs. DiLaurentis, two young boys, and a baby girl. 'A' finds Spencer, but when Mona shows up, they disappear. The girls make it outside, only to find themselves surrounded by an electric fence and miles of forest.
Season 6
1. Game on, Charles
An unknown blonde girl watches from the shadows as the girls attempt to escape the dollhouse. ‘A’ locks them outside and leaves them at the mercy of the elements for two nights before ending the punishment. They are hardly relieved to go back inside, but see it as the better of two poor options. ‘A’ welcomes them “home” by gassing them again. The girls wake up hours later, posed on metal tables like bodies in a morgue. They are directed to their individual rooms where ‘A’ leaves them separated and confined for three weeks.
Back in Rosewood, proof of Mona’s life has allowed Alison to be released from jail. She publicly requests privacy during an emotional time. The police stay inside the DiLaurentis house in hopes that ‘A’ will show up if they believe Alison is unprotected. Unbeknownst to them, Alison’s public speech contains a covert message for 'A’ to meet her at the kissing rock. She, Caleb, Ezra, and Toby fake a call from ‘A’ to distract the police long enough for Alison to leave her house undetected. The liars are visibly shaken when they are finally released from their rooms.
‘A’ directs them to set up for Alison’s arrival. With the real Alison apparently on her way, Mona has been discarded and trapped in a hole. The girls read newspaper articles about their families, and the reminder of home inspires them to make another escape attempt. Spencer explains that each of the cryptic messages from Mona’s bedroom is an anagram for Charles DiLaurentis. She posits that they can use sentimental items from Charles’s vault to bargain for their freedom. During the nightly power lapse, the girls enter the vault and begin to light things on fire.
Charles pulls an alarm, and the girls find Mona before heading for the exit. Alison wears a trackable pair of shoes so Caleb and Ezra can follow her once ‘A’ takes her to the dollhouse. Things quickly go south, and the plan proves to be too risky. They’re about to give up when Alison hears the faint sound of a fire alarm. She, Caleb, and Ezra find the entrance to the dollhouse just as the five girls emerge, relieved to be safe at last. Police discover the mysterious blonde girl who introduces herself as Sara Harvey.
2. Songs of Innocence
After leaving the dollhouse, the liars remain haunted by memories of their captivity. Their loved ones’ questions are difficult to answer, and none of the girls seem to want to talk to each other. Aria is eager to accept a police interview. While speaking to the detective, Aria’s story changes to make Andrew look more guilty. Ezra suggests journaling as a coping mechanism, and Aria is staunchly against the idea. She wants a clean break from the dollhouse, and is willing to ignore certain realities to make that happen.
When Spencer can’t find her anti-anxiety medication, Veronica admits that she didn’t have that prescription filled. Without the medication, Spencer’s memories of the dollhouse make it impossible to sleep. She steals one of Aria’s pills out of desperation. However, Veronica offers to stay up with Spencer until she falls asleep, and the stolen pill goes untaken. Emily takes one of her father’s guns to a firing range. As she shoots, she remembers using a switch board to decide which of the other girls will receive a punishment.
Pam is concerned that Emily has chosen a dangerous way to express her anger. Emily admits that she is more afraid than she is angry, and that firing a gun only made her feel worse. Hanna’s bedroom reminds her too much of her room in the dollhouse. She wastes no time peeling off her wallpaper and getting rid of her furniture. Hanna’s frenetic energy concerns Caleb and Ashley, and their concern makes Hanna feel like she’s under a microscope. Caleb promises that Hanna is brave enough to get through this.
Alison asks her father if there is a Charles in their family. His immediate denial is suspicious, and the empty spaces in their family’s photo album make it look like he’s hiding something. Toby’s new police partner, Lorenzo, introduces himself to Alison. She is embarrassed to think of what he’s heard about her, but Lorenzo seems willing to let Alison make a first impression on him. Emily develops a fascination with Sara Harvey. Sara’s complicated relationship with her mother leads her to run away from home, and she ends up at the Fields house. Pam agrees to let Sara stay the night. This major update re-opens the line of communication between the four liars.
3. Songs of Experience
The liars prepare to go back to school together. Hanna is especially motivated to return with her friends by her side, but Emily, Aria, and Spencer find last-minute reasons to avoid Rosewood High for another day. Emily feels bad leaving Sara alone and decides to stay home with her. Aria lingers at The Brew after ordering her coffee to-go, and Ezra encourages her to stick around. Spencer visits the DiLaurentis house where Alison is busy reflecting on a lifetime of poor decisions. Spencer stays to help her through her feelings of guilt.
Dr. Sullivan sees Hanna alone at school and offers her a listening ear. Hanna agrees, opening up about the tension in her friendgroup post-dollhouse. Lorenzo asks Alison if she would be interested in coaching a girls’ soccer team. Alison doubts she would have the approval of any parents. Toby asks Spencer to keep Alison away from Lorenzo, but Spencer doesn’t want to interfere. Ezra calls Andrew’s doctor and requests information about him to satisfy Aria’s curiosity. The doctor won’t release anything sensitive, but they let it slip that Andrew was adopted.
Spencer asks Jason if he knows of a Charles DiLaurentis. Jason says that he used to have an imaginary friend named Charlie until his father decided one day that Charlie had to go away. Hanna convinces the others to join her at Dr. Sullivan’s office. The girls are ready to spill everything until ‘A’ calls and threatens Sara’s life if the girls say a word. With Andrew in police custody, it is unclear who is behind this threat. Alison is disappointed to learn that her father lied to her.
She and the girls search the DiLaurentis house for evidence of Charles, and Aria finds a photo of Jessica with two young boys. Alison and Jason present the photo to their father and demand answers from him. The liars finally discuss the dollhouse switchboard. They confirm that they were all forced to play the same “game,” and that none of them ever received the promised electric shock when their switch was flipped. Andrew is released from jail when the police can’t gather enough evidence against him. He doesn’t hold back from expressing his vitriol for the liars, leaving them feeling guilty for accusing him and afraid that the real ‘A’ is still at large.
4. Don't Look Now
Alison finally learns the truth from her father: Charles is the eldest DiLaurentis sibling. When Alison was a baby, Charles nearly drowned her in a bathtub. Mr. and Mrs. DiLaurentis admitted Charles to Radley and, when he was sixteen, he committed suicide. Mrs. DiLaurentis scattered Charles’s ashes without Kenneth’s participation. Alison doesn’t know whether to fear Charles or pity him. The girls sneak into a warehouse where all unclaimed Radley files are being stored. They find Charles’s patient record and note that it ends just after an increase in his medication.
They also see Alison’s late Aunt Carol on the visitor log. Caleb’s overprotective behavior begins to wear on Hanna. Things come to a head when he admits to placing a tracking device on her car. She makes it clear that his actions aren’t acceptable, no matter how worried he is. Hanna asks for some space, and Caleb obliges. At Hollis College, Aria meets a fellow photographer named Clark, and the two strike up a friendship. Aria is developing some photos when she sees an ‘A’ message. It triggers a dollhouse memory in which ‘A’ cuts her hair short after she refuses to dye it pink.
That night, Aria opens up to her father, finally accepting his emotional support. Spencer is haunted by a dollhouse memory in which she wakes up covered in blood, terrified that 'A' made her hurt someone. Spencer looks for Aria’s anti-anxiety medication in the trash, but doesn’t find it. She ends up getting marijuana from The Brew’s newest hire, Sabrina. Pam decides that she and Emily can’t continue to let Sara stay with them. Emily is protective of Sara, not wanting to ask her to return to an abusive household.
Sara realizes that her presence isn’t welcome and moves back home on her own, assuring Emily that she will be fine. Jason tells Alison that he recently caught their mother tending to Aunt Carol’s empty house. They wonder if Charles could be living inside. Alison, Jason, Hanna, and Spencer decide to check the place out. They don’t find Charles, but there is a headstone in the yard with his name on it. The grave marker is surrounded by tree roots, indicating that it was placed a long time ago. ' A' ending: ‘A’ uses their computer to track the girls’ exact locations.
5. She's No Angel
Spencer has a nightmare of a young girl dancing around a familiar, creepy room. She wonders if it could have been a vision of the dollhouse. Sabrina’s pot cookies provide temporary relief from her anxiety, but Spencer decides she can’t become reliant on drugs again. She goes to an addiction recovery meeting and runs into Dean, her former rehab coach. Lorenzo keeps Alison company while she’s stuck at home. Alison overhears a cop badmouthing her to his partner, but Kenneth accuses her of making up a story so Lorenzo could fill the position.
Despite her father’s disapproval, Alison continues fostering a relationship with Lorenzo, eventually sharing a kiss with him. Emily suggests that Sara look into getting emancipated from her mother. They seek advice from Caleb, who offers Sara a job so that she can demonstrate an ability to support herself. Once Sara’s application is under review, she and Emily celebrate by getting tattoos. Mona’s time away from Rosewood hasn’t relieved her of her stress. She is afraid of Alison’s retaliation, and that she will be in legal trouble for faking her death.
At The Brew, Hanna and Mona are accosted by Lesli Stone. She was caught perjuring herself at Alison’s trial and blames Mona for the trouble she’s in. Hanna is frustrated with Lesli for making Mona feel worse. Clark invites Aria with him on a photography outing. Aria is taking macabre photos of junkyard dolls when she sees a dark figure walk by. She later discovers a photo of ‘A’ among Clark’s negatives. To Aria’s surprise, ‘A’ appears to have a woman’s figure. Sara finds out that Emily and her friends are still trying to identify ‘A’, and she freaks out.
Hanna and Spencer sneak into Radley to find more information on Charles. Spencer recognizes a room in the asylum’s basement as the one from her nightmare. The girls find a record of Charles’s organs being donated post mortem. On their way out, they catch Mona trying to steal Lesli’s file. The girls are shocked to learn that Lesli was a patient at Radley, and that Bethany Young was her roommate. It seems plausible that Lesli is assuming Charles’s identity and seeking revenge for Bethany’s murder. Mona tells Lesli that her secret is out, and Lesli explodes with anger. ' A' ending: ‘A’ creates a doll-sized wig with pink streaks in it, seemingly modeled after Aria’s hair.
6. No Stone Unturned
With Mona confined to her house, the girls have to gather their own intel on Lesli Stone. Hanna steals Lesli’s keys so she and Spencer can search her car. Amid the mess, they find several pairs of fake glasses and four human-sized cages. Clark catches Aria returning his negatives, but he isn’t upset with her. Aria finds a doll at the junkyard with pink streaks in its hair and a knife through its eye. Ezra gives Aria an unsolicited letter recommending her for the photography contest. Caleb shows Sara the ropes on her first day at work.
Sara asks about Alison, curious to know the person whom she was forced to imitate in the dollhouse. Hanna is fed up with Caleb’s overbearing behavior. Ashley sympathizes with Caleb and tells him that all Hanna really wants is for things to go back to normal. Caleb finds Hanna and initiates sex with her. Spencer continues to debate whether or not to speak at commencement. Dean suggests she decline the responsibility, while Sara encourages her to use the opportunity to tell her story in her own words. Ultimately, Spencer agrees to write the speech.
Dean panics when Spencer misses an addiction recovery meeting. He admits to having feelings for her and decides he can’t stay invested if she doesn’t reciprocate. Nicole Gordon invites Emily and Sara on an upcoming Habitat for Humanity trip to Thailand. A car just like Lesli’s swipes Sara with its side mirror, injuring her arm and sending her into a frenzy. She firmly rejects the idea of going to Thailand with Emily. Aria, Hanna, and Spencer sneak into the science lab where Lesli works as a teacher’s assistant.
Hanna sets off a metal detector, and the girls discover the microchips implanted in their necks. Hanna impulsively releases the laboratory animals from their cages. The girls are scrambling to re-contain them when Mona shows up and shares some important information: Lesli wouldn’t have any reason to mess with the liars, and the documentation of Charles’s organ donation is fake. Emily discreetly checks Sara’s neck for a microchip, and Sara surprises her with a passionate kiss. At The Brew, Aria notices a connection forming between Ezra and Nicole. Charles leaves a threatening message under Kenneth’s windshield wiper. Kenneth digs up Charles’s grave to see for himself whether anyone is buried beneath the headstone.
7. O Brother, Where Art Thou
Lesli backs out of her agreement to meet up and answer the liars’ questions. Mona swears she doesn’t know who ‘A’ is despite being the one to pass them the torch. Sara’s old friend, Claire, comes back to Rosewood looking to reconnect. She invites Sara to stay at her house. Emily becomes jealous and protective, but Sara thinks living separately will make it easier to begin their relationship in earnest. An investment firm called The Carissimi Group awards Hanna an educational scholarship. Hanna and Spencer do some digging, and what they find leads them to believe the company is a front for an ‘A’ scheme.
Aria is ready to get rid of her dolls and find a new artistic muse. Mona has been avoiding Mike since she and the liars escaped the dollhouse. Mona feels guilty for devising a plan that caused way more problems than it was worth. Mike agrees that Mona screwed up, but he still loves her. Kenneth drives himself and Alison far outside of Rosewood in fear of what Charles has planned. Back home, Jason is invited to meet Charles alone at an arcade. The girls decide to remove their microchips and prepare an ambush.
Toby thinks the plan is too dangerous, so he and Lorenzo go to the arcade on a two-man mission. Toby gobbles up a bag of sweets that Sabrina gave to Spencer, unaware that they are laced with marijuana. It isn’t long before the liars become restless, abandon Toby’s plan, and head for the arcade. Alison slips her father a sleeping pill and sneaks out of their hotel. Mona gives her a ride, and Alison calls the police on the way back to Rosewood. The meeting between Jason and Charles is interrupted by Toby and Lorenzo, followed by the liars and the rest of the Rosewood P.D. Toby is too impaired to focus, and Charles gets away.
Aria gets her letter of acceptance into the photography contest. Spencer tries to apologize to Toby, but he can’t hold a conversation. Emily smashes her microchip. Jason is furious with the liars for sabotaging his meeting with Charles. In their attic, Alison and Jason find a video of themselves as children celebrating Charles’s birthday at the arcade. ' A' ending: ‘A’ unwraps a framed photo of Alison, Jason, and Charles at the arcade.

As a finalist in the photography contest, Aria’s work will be displayed at a gallery exhibition. Tanner offers to fill the event with undercover cops to discourage ‘A’ from interfering. Emily is thinking about asking Sara to prom, but she doesn’t know whether the event will be suitable for a first date.
Aria is the only single friend in the group now, and she doesn’t know whom to take to prom. She floats the idea to Ezra before realizing how weird that would be. Hanna and Spencer go to The Carissimi Group to return Hanna’s scholarship and gather intel. They speak with a man named Rhys Matthews who looks like he could be a DiLaurentis. His answers to the girls’ questions are vague, and he won’t take back the money. Lorenzo tries to get information about Charles’s case for Alison, but his access is limited.
Alison takes care of Lorenzo and his broken arm, then swipes his police badge after he falls asleep. Tanner catches Alison at the station looking mournfully at the evidence bags full of Charles’s childhood mementos. Lorenzo is angry that Alison betrayed his trust and got him in trouble at work. Ezra surprises Aria by showing up to the gallery exhibition. Nicole comes with him, but Ezra insists it’s not a date. Nicole is a fellow photographer, and Ezra is thinking about joining her Habitat team. When the gallery lights go up, it’s revealed that Aria’s photos have been replaced with pictures of the liars in the dollhouse.
Ella is frustrated that the extensive police presence couldn’t prevent a catastrophe like this from happening. Feeling re-traumatized, Aria looks to Ezra for comfort. Hanna, Spencer, and Emily spot Rhys outside the gallery and follow him to an abandoned doll factory. Clark arrives shortly after and follows Rhys inside. The girls don’t know what to make of Clark’s apparent involvement. ' A' ending: ‘A’ has a tuxedo, a toolbox, and six syringes in the trunk of their car. Red Coat hands ‘A’ two tickets to prom.

Alison gets a text from Charles asking to see her at prom. While the other girls meet up in the barn, Alison slips away to Rosewood High. The moms open a bottle of wine in the Hastings kitchen and gossip about the countless DiLaurentis scandals. They share their suspicions that Kenneth was responsible for Jessica’s murder. Mona locates ‘A’s base of operations at The Carissimi Group. She, Sara, and the liars find ‘A’s lair, but Sara hesitates to go inside and is separated from the group. A holographic projection displays a live stream of Alison talking to a hooded figure. Kenneth and Jason lie paralyzed on the floor nearby. ‘A’ turns around, and the girls are shocked to see that it’s Cece Drake. Cece confirms that she and Charles DiLaurentis are the same person. As a child, Cece lacked a necessary awareness of human mortality.
Her efforts to care for baby Alison often ended in disaster, and she was committed to Radley after one too many incidents. Jessica routinely visited her daughter while Kenneth kept his distance. Cece began to present as Charlotte around her trusted friend, Bethany Young. Bethany’s kind disposition flipped when she killed Marion Cavanaugh and pointed the finger at Cece. Jessica bribed Detective Wilden to rule the death a suicide. After a symbolic funeral for “Charles,” Cece began living as Charlotte. She used her out privileges to attend college and pay unauthorized visits to her siblings.
Cece developed a friendship with Alison, as well as a controversial romantic relationship with Jason. Jessica warned Cece that Kenneth believed “Charles’s” grave to be real. The night Bethany snuck out of Radley, Cece followed her to Rosewood. She mistook Alison for Bethany and hit her with a rock. Jessica buried one daughter to save the other, and Wilden accepted another bribe. Cece learned about the ‘A’ game from Mona, took the reins, and quickly found herself obsessed. Cece treated the liars like her dolls, “taking care” of them in much the same way she did Alison when they were young.
Mona realizes that she is the one who hit Bethany that fateful night. Sara reveals her allegiance to Cece, and Emily is outraged. Spencer and Mona identify Radley as the source of the live stream. The girls race to the asylum where Spencer diffuses a bomb Cece had planted. Cece goes to the roof of the building and debates jumping off the edge before opting to surrender instead. She insists that Charlotte is no longer a threat, and asks for their statements at the hearing to reflect that. The girls push back, but Alison’s disappointment is far more persuasive than her threats ever were. One by one, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily tell the judge that they are no longer afraid of Charlotte. Aria has prepared a similar statement, but abandons it to express her true feelings: she opposes Charlotte’s release. The final statement is made by Mona, who speaks about her empathy for Charlotte’s situation.
The judge makes her decision, and Charlotte goes home with Alison. The liars meet up at The Radley for drinks. They congratulate Aria for her integrity, and the rest of the night is spent enjoying each other’s company. The next morning, Charlotte is found dead in the grass beneath the open window of the church bell tower. Alison is devastated and looks to Emily for comfort. Unable to get into Ezra's loft as he is out of town, Aria breaks in. In the loft, she finds Ezra's nine iron isn't missing, but then she hears a voicemail coming in from her dad and worries that Byron might have had something to do with Charlotte's murder. They plan to write the book as a dialogue between two characters loosely based on Ezra and Nicole. Aria matches an eyewitness description of the person who called Charlotte the night of her murder. She removes Liam from the project to ensure Aria stays properly focused. Spencer and Emily follow Sara’s driver around and monitor his shady behavior. Alison wakes with a new sense of hope for the future. Among the many flowers from Elliott in Alison’s hospital room, Hanna finds a card from ‘A’. The message inside confirms ‘A’s intention to take out the five girls one by one. Hanna asks Caleb to help her “confess” to Charlotte’s murder and lure ‘A’ into a trap. The rest of the liars voice their concerns, but Hanna is committed to the plan whether they get on board or not. Spencer can’t help but notice the way Caleb glues himself to Hanna while they strategize. ' A' ending: ‘A’ is watching Veronica’s campaign ad when they receive Hanna’s confession.
20. Hush, Hush, Sweet Liars
Caleb is careful to think of everything that could possibly go wrong while setting the trap for ‘A’. He builds an electric fence and installs motion-sensing cameras around The Lost Woods Resort. As they write, Ezra comes to terms with the loss of Nicole, and Aria draws upon the feelings she once had for Ezra. Jillian responds to their first draft with a level of excitement Aria has never seen from her boss. Aria and Ezra celebrate with a spontaneous lovemaking session. Sara’s new hotel room is directly above the forgotten section of Radley’s basement.
Toby volunteers to help Spencer investigate, much to the frustration of Yvonne. The pair discovers a secret room in the old sanitarium, as well as the Radley patient file for Charlotte’s biological mother, Mary Drake. Alison begins to see haunting visions of her mother and Detective Wilden. Emily reassures her that the hallucinations are a side effect of her medication, but Alison continues to lose her grip on reality. She voluntarily commits herself to the same psychiatric hospital that facilitated Charlotte’s treatment. It is later revealed to the viewer that Mary Drake and Elliott Rollins were posing as Jessica and Wilden.
Elliott is after the Carissimi Group funds, while Mary is acting out of resentment for Jessica. Veronica’s team celebrates her campaign and makes last-minute calls to voters. To Spencer’s surprise, Mona shows up to offer her support. The poll results are announced, and Veronica is elected one of Pennsylvania’s state senators. Spending time with Caleb reopens Hanna’s emotional wounds. The night their relationship ended, Hanna bailed on plans with Caleb in favor of a work event. She changed her mind, but Caleb was already gone by the time Hanna made it back to their apartment.
Hanna confesses that she still loves Caleb, and the two kiss. Hanna sends ‘A’ her location from inside a boarded up motel room. A dark figure runs through the area and triggers the cameras, but they avoid electrocution. Meanwhile, Hanna has disappeared through a trap door that was hidden underneath the bed. The liars et al. see a Jessica DiLaurentis look-alike when they review Caleb’s security footage. A mass text taking credit for Hanna’s abduction is signed, “A.D.” 'A' ending: A.D. drags Hanna’s unconscious body across the floor of the church bell tower.
Season 7
1. Tick Tock, Bitches
In media res: Aria, Spencer, and Emily are hastily digging a hole to bury someone they killed. Four days prior, A.D. locks Hanna in a shed with no doors or windows. They periodically torture her with a water hose and a cattle prod. A.D. leverages their control over Hanna’s fate to demand the identity of Charlotte’s real killer. The girls and their allies largely agree that Alison is guilty. The group splits up to make sure no lead goes unexplored in their pursuit of evidence. Aria and Ezra look around Alison’s house for a red jacket that Charlotte’s killer may have worn.
The pair is forced to abandon the search when Elliott shows up unexpectedly. They leave undetected, but empty-handed. Aria sets aside her romantic confusion and spends the night at Ezra’s loft. Mary Drake formally introduces herself as the new owner of The Lost Woods. As Charlotte’s birth mother, she has the most compelling motive to be A.D. Spencer and Toby break into Mary’s motel room to learn what they can about her. Mary is apparently well-traveled and well-read. Her Radley file says she was a frequent patient at the sanitarium into her early adulthood.
Caleb and Mona begrudgingly work together to track Mary’s every move. They eavesdrop on her phone calls and hear her talking to an unknown British man. Mary knocks on Spencer’s door looking for Peter and Veronica. She seems familiar with the Hastings family, but doesn’t go into detail about their history. Mary only came back to Rosewood because she found out Jessica was dead. Spencer visits Hanna in a dream and encourages her to look for a way out. Hanna escapes through a wall vent and flags down a car driven by Mary Drake.
In her hospital bed at Welby, Alison has violent episodes that Elliott manages by restraining and sedating her. When Emily gets the opportunity to ask about Charlotte, Alison cries out for forgiveness. Emily is finally convinced of Alison’s guilt when she finds a red jacket in her bedroom. Caleb wastes no time before handing the jacket over to A.D. His tunnel vision throughout the ordeal makes Spencer feel invisible. Confident that Alison is Charlotte’s killer, Elliott reveals his duplicity to her. In a British accent, he promises to keep Alison at Welby for as long as she lives.
2. Bedlam
Hanna refuses to go to the police or see a doctor after making her escape. She doesn’t talk about what happened in the shed with A.D., but her demeanor gives away enough to raise her friends’ concerns. Hanna and Caleb discuss the moment they shared in the motel. They decide it was a mistake that shouldn’t change the status of their relationship. Spencer overhears their conversation, leaving her confused and hurt. Aria breaks up with Liam before finding out that Jillian has reassigned him to the book.
Everyone agrees to be cordial for the sake of the project, but Liam’s attitude changes when he catches Aria and Ezra holding hands. Liam turns on Ezra, unable to overlook the way he and Aria originally got together. Hanna tries to restore her relationship by bringing Jordan to the bar where they first met, only to discover that the building no longer exists. Hanna realizes that she is looking for something that’s been gone for a long time. She returns Jordan’s engagement ring and, having unwritten her future, she agrees to go into business with Lucas.
Spencer loses her job in D.C. due to her prolonged physical and mental absence. Mary opens up to Spencer about the incident that landed her in Radley. When they were teenagers, Jessica asked Mary to take over for her at a babysitting job. The parents came home to find their child was dead, and everyone believed Jessica when she said Mary was responsible. Alison calls Emily and makes a desperate plea for help before the line disconnects. Elliott has changed Alison’s patient instructions to disallow most visitors. Emily teams up with Mary, using her familial connections to get into Alison’s hospital room.
Alison is barely lucid and struggling to connect with her surroundings. She is about to expose Elliott’s true intentions when he interrupts the visit. Elliott pulls Mary aside and starts a heated argument with her. Emily can’t hear the exchange, but the two apparently know each other better than she thought. Mary disapproves of the way Elliott is treating Alison. Elliott warns Mary not to interfere, reminding her of the payout she’s been promised. At night, Alison is drugged and wheeled through the halls of Welby. She sees the fluorescent lights of the operating room just before losing consciousness.
3. The Talented Mr. Rollins
Elliott’s lies are so numerous that the girls don’t seem to know one real thing about him. Emily starts working as a bartender at The Radley. She promises Sabrina that the incident with Ezra’s key was not an accurate representation of her character, and Sabrina agrees to give Emily a second chance. Hanna wears a replica engagement ring to hide her break-up with Jordan. Caleb confesses his recent infidelity to Spencer. Hanna and Caleb both maintain that the moment was just that, but Spencer isn’t convinced.
She’s tired of being in love with someone whose attention feels impermanent. Elliott repeatedly overpowers, sedates, and physically restrains Alison. The liars present their concerns to the head doctor at Welby. He checks on Alison but finds no evidence that her care is being mishandled. Elliott’s connection to Mary remains a mystery. Spencer offers to get Toby on the case but changes her mind when she sees the ring on Yvonne’s finger. Desperate to rescue Alison, Emily goes to Toby herself. Toby searches a police database and finds a brief record of Elliott Rollins from 1958.
Spencer hears from Jason who, it turns out, had no idea that Alison was hospitalized. Aria takes pictures of everything inside Elliott’s storage bench. Spencer analyzes the photos and takes note of the materials Elliott used to pose as Detective Wilden. She also recognizes a stimulant that can cause hallucinations if overdosed. Aria and Hanna go to Amish country to confirm another of Elliott’s lies. A young girl claims that Elliott and Charlotte were romantically involved. She has a set of dolls that Charlotte gifted her, each with the name and face of one of the liars.
Aria pushes for Hanna to open up about her abduction, but Hanna is afraid to recount the experience. She ends up revealing a small piece of what A.D. put her through after seeing a cattle prod at the Amish farm. Elliott realizes his storage bench has been tampered with. He quickly packs up and smuggles Alison out of Welby. Alison covertly shares her location, and the girls drive into the woods with Hanna at the wheel. When Elliott pops a tire, Alison takes the opportunity to run. He chases after her on foot, Hanna hits the brakes too late, and Elliott flies head-first through the windshield of Lucas’s car.
4. Hit and Run, Run, Run
The odds of proving Elliott’s death was an accident are slim, so the girls decide to bury his body and make it look like he skipped town. Aria uses Elliott’s key card to sneak Alison back into Welby. Alison is afraid to return to her hospital room, but she must be found in Elliott’s restraints for his crimes to be exposed. Aria asks outright if Alison killed Charlotte. While Alison admits to being at the church that night, Charlotte was still alive when she left. Spencer is cleaning the floor of the barn when Caleb shows up unexpectedly.
He pours his heart out through the locked door, and Hanna overhears everything. Once Aria swipes out of Welby, Spencer’s job is to put Elliott’s phone and jacket on a train out of state. A man named Marco asks to buy Spencer a drink at The Radley and, whether to strengthen her alibi or forget her relationship woes, she accepts. Emily has just finished packing an overnight bag with some of Elliott’s things when Spencer calls. She’s too drunk to drive, let alone take care of her part of the plan.
Emily covers for Spencer and brings her home. As usual, Mona is several steps ahead of the liars. She gets Lucas’s windshield fixed by someone who won’t snitch and makes the girls aware of Elliott’s burner phone. Hanna begins to spiral thinking about the futility of covering up Elliott’s death. She confesses to Mona that, in hindsight, there was enough time to stop the car. The next morning, the girls are approached by Jenna Marshall. She claims to be in town for Toby’s engagement, but Toby is clearly surprised to see his step sister.
The two allude to a failed attempt they made to reconcile a few years prior. Hanna encourages Spencer to tell Caleb the truth about Elliott, but when Spencer gets home, Caleb and his belongings are gone. Hanna realizes with horror that she’s lost one of her bracelets. She and Mona find it in Elliott’s car along with the missing burner phone. A call comes in from Jenna asking for “Archer.” Toby tells the girls that the man claiming to be Elliott Rollins is missing, and that finding him is the P.D.’s top priority. At Welby, Mary tells Alison that she’s “in charge” now that Elliott is gone.
5. Along Comes Mary
Alison is released from Welby under the condition that Mary lives with and supervises her. Mary regrets being manipulated by Archer, and while Alison doesn’t trust her estranged aunt, she knows how it feels to need a second chance. The man Spencer met the night of Archer’s death turns out to be the investigation’s lead detective, Marco Furey. The police find Archer’s car at the train station, but the trail doesn’t end there. Someone uses one of Archer’s credit cards to rent a car before heading out west.
It is unknown who the driver is or why they are continuing to fabricate Archer’s movements. Prior to his death, Archer drained the money from all of Alison’s bank accounts, including her shares of The Carissimi Group. Mona analyzes Archer’s burner phone and reads through his texts. The night he took Alison out of Welby, Archer messaged his accomplice to inform them that Alison didn’t kill Charlotte. Aria and Emily investigate an apartment that Archer had been renting in secret. They find a wealth of evidence, most notably a copy of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night belonging to “Archer Dunhill.” Emily poses as Archer and invites his accomplice to the apartment, but Toby interrupts before the meeting can happen.
Emily oversleeps and misses an important exam, but still receives an excellent grade. A.D. takes credit for the favor. Despite feeling put off by Emily’s distracted behavior, Sabrina happily agrees to a second date. Spencer finds out from Toby that Caleb disappeared on purpose to sort out his thoughts. Hanna asks what she can do to help, and Spencer urges her to consider where her true feelings lie. Aria answers Ezra’s phone when a call mysteriously comes in from Nicole. Ezra is finally in a good place with his grief, so Aria keeps the call a secret.
She also doesn’t mention anything about the situation with Archer. When Ezra proposes, Aria doesn’t know how to respond. A.D. returns Alison’s red jacket with a note exposing her friends for turning her in. The girls suspect that Jenna could be Archer’s accomplice, especially after she extends her stay at The Radley. Jenna and Sara meet and quickly bond over their hatred of the liars. The devilish duo becomes a terrible trio when Noel Kahn enters the picture.
6. Wanted: Dead or Alive
The cops discover Archer Dunhill’s real identity and existing criminal record. Their latest theory is that he’s pretending to flee the state while continuing to lurk around Rosewood. Spencer pulls Marco aside and preemptively shuts down the idea of exploring a relationship. Aria is afraid Ezra would regret proposing if he knew the trouble she’s gotten into recently. Hanna remembers feeling the same way with Jordan, but she thinks Ezra can handle the truth. In the spirit of honesty, Hanna comes clean about her break-up with Jordan.
Aria tells Ezra what happened to Archer, and the two make their engagement official. Caleb admits that his feelings for Hanna aren’t entirely gone. Spencer gives Caleb credit for restarting her heart when she thought it would never beat again. Hanna and Spencer discuss their break-ups, and Spencer encourages Hanna to reach out to Caleb. Mary is surprised and touched to hear that Charlotte used to go by “Drake.” She swears she never saw Charlotte after the day she was born. When Archer’s burner phone rings, Hanna hears the voice of Archer himself on the other end.
If he really is alive, the driver that ran him down has a target on her back. Mary hides out in her room at The Lost Woods, as she expects Archer to come after her for flipping. Emily confronts Jenna directly about her involvement with Archer. Jenna says she helped Archer get his fake identity as a favor for her friend, Charlotte. Now, she suspects the liars were involved in Archer’s disappearance. Jenna prevents Sara from delivering a warning to Emily, and Sara’s dead body is later found in the hotel shower.
Alison has a hard time being around her friends now that she knows they turned her in to A.D. The patrol officer outside Alison’s house is replaced by an assailant in a latex mask, and Alison narrowly keeps her life in the attack. She realizes with embarrassment how easily she fell for A.D.’s trick to separate her from her support system. The only way to be sure that Archer is dead is to return to the scene of the crime. Hanna and Spencer bring their shovels to the woods and confirm Archer is right where they left him, being eaten by the maggots. 'A' ending: A.D. watches footage of Hanna and Spencer digging up Archer’s grave.
7. Original G'A'ngsters
The recent attempt on Alison’s life inspires the girls to prioritize their friendship. Emily insists on treating her mother to dinner for her birthday despite the guilt Pam feels for celebrating without Wayne. A bachelorette party invites Emily and Pam to join the festivities, and they have a fantastic night. Ezra floats the idea of eloping to Tuscany. Aria is hesitant to leave her friends behind, but Emily encourages her to follow her heart. Aria and Ezra are headed out the door when the FBI shows up with news that Nicole might be alive.
While Toby and Jenna tried to reconcile a few years ago, the progress they made reset when Jenna tried to kiss him. Someone breaks into Toby’s trailer to steal Mary’s Radley file, and Yvonne is hospitalized with moderate physical injuries. Spencer urges Toby to leave Rosewood. He takes the advice, making preparations for a move to Maine with Yvonne. The police rule Sara’s death an accident. Hanna looks for Jenna’s laptop in her hotel room, but finds only a locked box. Caleb gets the key, and Spencer helps photograph the contents: a stack of coded documents.
The girls hide when Noel enters the room. He stashes Mary’s Radley file and makes an angry call to someone named Dr. Cochran. Caleb gets to work cracking Jenna’s code, and Hanna tells him about her break-up with Jordan. Jason comes home and promptly tells Mary to get lost. Alison protests his demands and arranges for the three of them to have dinner. Jason recruits Aria to come along and back him up, much to Alison’s annoyance. Aria and Jason briefly discuss a secret encounter from years back.
Mary describes seeing Jason once at Aunt Carol’s house but says Jessica kept them from meeting. Alison takes note when Mary mentions a storm cellar on the property. The girls go to Aunt Carol’s to investigate. They find files Jessica had on each of the girls, although Aria’s is missing. A record of Mary’s treatment at Radley says that she gave birth a second time after Charlotte, and that Dr. Cochran was her obstetrician. A.D. sets off Spencer’s car alarm and manages to lock the girls inside the vehicle. A countdown begins, and when it reaches zero, the storm cellar explodes. 'A' ending: A.D. has files on Aria and Noel. They douse Noel’s in alcohol and light a match.

Jenna then shoots at the Liars and gets Spencer. Jenna corners her and is about to execute her when Mary Drake knocks her out and reveals that she is Spencer's biological mother. While leaving town, Toby and Yvonne are in a car accident. "A.D." ending: "A.D." drags an unconscious Jenna from the abandoned school, and Jenna asks if it was they who shot Spencer.
