Plot summary

While Xena pursues the bandit Hesiod, Gabrielle finds priests trying to awaken three Titans from stone. Correcting the ritual's pronunciation, she accidentally frees Theia, Crius and Hyperion. They mistake her for a goddess and offer their service. At first Gabrielle uses their strength to help the villagers repair flood damage and to support Xena against Hesiod's gang.

Xena doubts that releasing the Titans was wise. Hyperion soon realizes that Gabrielle is human and turns against her. Xena wounds his foot to protect her, and the villagers take refuge in a temple the Titans cannot simply destroy. Hyperion threatens to kill people until they surrender Xena. He also wants Gabrielle to free the many other Titans still imprisoned in the cavern.

Crius tries to stop Hyperion from killing children and dies in the fight. Xena gets the children to safety, but Hesiod persuades frightened villagers to deliver her to Hyperion in a coffin. She escapes the box; Hyperion kills Hesiod and his accomplice when he discovers the trick. Xena returns and persuades the villagers to help build a trap instead of sacrificing one another.

The young priest Phyleus reveals that another chant can restore the Titans to stone. Wanting to repair her mistake, Gabrielle enters the cavern to find it and is captured. Hyperion orders her to perform the liberation ritual. She stalls with stories and then makes him believe she is no longer qualified to use the spell.

Xena arrives and lures Hyperion into the villagers' trap. Before she can kill him, Theia offers the restoration spell to save his life. Hyperion breaks free, but Xena reads the words to Gabrielle, who pronounces them correctly and turns both surviving Titans back to stone.

Afterward Gabrielle admits that she endangered herself because she wanted to make amends. Xena reassures her that a good heart does not prevent mistakes. Gabrielle also declines Phyleus' attempted kiss and chooses to continue traveling with her friend.
