Plot summary
Xena and Gabrielle follow a young pickpocket to an orphanage and discover that King Silvas plans to evict its children at midnight. He has also banned Solstice celebrations ever since losing his wife thirty years earlier. His clerk Senticles, once a toymaker, has been forced into enforcing the king's bitterness.
Gabrielle proposes a performance that will frighten Silvas into changing. Xena appears as one of the Fates and leads him toward a concealed room where the old Solstice decorations have remained untouched. Gabrielle impersonates the absent queen while Senticles and a rescued donkey help sustain the illusion.
Their assumptions change when Silvas says that his wife left him rather than died. Xena next takes him, disguised as an ordinary traveler, to the orphanage. The children welcome them and share what little they have, giving the king a direct view of the people his orders will hurt.
Soldiers arrive to enforce the eviction. Xena, Gabrielle, Senticles and the children defend the home using toys as improvised weapons. Xena notices that the matron Melana wears the queen's distinctive pendant.
Silvas mistakes the hooded matron for the Fate of the future and promises to change rather than face death. He joins the children's side. After the guards are defeated, he discovers that Melana is Analia, the wife who left him and has spent the intervening years caring for orphans.
Leaving the reunited couple to begin again, Xena and Gabrielle give the donkey to a traveling family with a baby. Xena also gives Gabrielle a carved sheep like the one she treasured as a child, making their own quiet Solstice celebration complete.
