Plot summary
While reflecting on the destruction of Cirra, Xena rescues Gabrielle and other captives from the Children of the Sun. Their leader Sitacles catches her with a concealed falling log, leaving her critically injured. Gabrielle defeats him but is wounded too. At Xena's request, she begins a difficult journey toward the healer Niklio on Mount Nestos.
As Gabrielle carries her through the mountains, Xena relives an earlier turning point. She once captured Julius Caesar and believed that they might conquer together. A stowaway named M'Lila impressed her with extraordinary fighting skills and taught her the pressure-point technique she later used as the pinch.
After Caesar was ransomed, he returned as an apparent ally and seized her ship. He crucified Xena and her men. M'Lila rescued her and brought her to Niklio, but Roman soldiers followed. M'Lila died protecting Xena, and that loss helped turn Xena's ambition into the fury that drove her worst years.
In the present, Gabrielle reaches the same healer, but Xena resists his efforts while caught in those memories. Niklio finally pronounces her dead, leaving Gabrielle grieving beside her.
Xena's spirit meets M'Lila again. Rather than letting her remain trapped in guilt, M'Lila urges her to recognize that her life still has a purpose. She explains that the dead can hear the living when they think of them.
Hearing Gabrielle's pleas, Xena realizes that she is still needed. The episode ends with her determination to return to her body, leaving the physical outcome for what follows.
