Plot summary

Meleager the Mighty summons Gabrielle to a village where he is being tried for murder. She trusts the warrior who helped save her home and pleads for him, but he is convicted. When he says a witness can establish his innocence, she frees him, forcing Xena to pursue and recapture him.

An ambush interrupts the return to court. Meleager then admits that he was drunk during the incident and cannot actually remember whether he killed the victim. Gabrielle is hurt that his confident denial concealed that uncertainty.

As the circumstances become clearer, Xena recognizes the dead man as an assassin she fought while Gabrielle was away at the Athens Academy. The man's death during that struggle was mistakenly connected to Meleager. Xena searches for the intended target who can help establish what happened.

The judge's men recapture Meleager and Gabrielle before she can finish. The judge is corrupt, and the apparent legal process has been manipulated rather than aimed at finding the truth. Gabrielle believes that she has failed when Meleager is hanged.

Xena has intervened to save his life, although Gabrielle does not yet know it. He is alive when he and Xena come to the dungeon to release her. Her grief turns to relief as she discovers that the execution did not kill him.

The case forces Gabrielle to confront the difference between loyalty and certainty, but her misplaced confidence does not end in Meleager's death. Xena's investigation clears the way for their reunion.
