Plot summary
Ares persuades the Furies to punish Xena for failing to avenge her father's murder. Their curse makes her increasingly delusional and erratic. Gabrielle struggles to protect her and learns at the Furies' temple that the accusation concerns a death Xena did not even know had occurred.
They seek out Cyrene, who admits that she killed Xena's father. He returned from Ares' temple intending to sacrifice his daughter, and Cyrene struck him to save her. The revelation traps Xena between the demand to avenge him and the horror of killing the mother who protected her.
Driven toward despair, Xena considers ending her own life. Ares urges her to kill Cyrene instead. She appears to agree, but demands that the Furies witness the act so that they cannot deny she has fulfilled their judgment.
At the confrontation, Xena introduces another possibility: Ares himself might be her father. Gabrielle supports the argument with stories of gods visiting warriors' wives in disguise, and Cyrene recalls an unusually sudden visit from her husband around the time Xena was conceived.
Xena challenges Ares to a duel as supposed proof that she shares divine blood. Her victory convinces the Furies to abandon the accusation and lift the punishment.
The claim of divine parentage is part of Xena's strategy to escape an impossible sentence, rather than a settled revelation about her birth. By turning the Furies' reasoning against Ares, she saves herself and Cyrene without carrying out the murder he wanted.
