Plot summary
Xena, Gabrielle and Joxer arrive in a town divided by a feud between the houses of Menos and Lycost. A street fight kills Joxer. The next morning, however, Xena wakes to find him alive and the same day starting again. Only she remembers what happened.
Each attempt to intervene creates another disaster. Saving Joxer does not prevent other deaths; Argo and Gabrielle die in different repetitions. Xena investigates the families and learns that their history includes kindness as well as hatred, but resolving individual quarrels still fails to break the loop.
The missing piece is the romance between Hermia and Neron. Believing that their families will never let them marry, Hermia has taken poison. Unable to cure her, Neron asked Cupid to prevent the following day from arriving, because that is when she would die. Cupid agreed to repeat the day until a hero could put things right.
Realizing that she is the expected hero, Xena stops improvising and carefully measures the town's angles, surfaces and sequence of events. On the decisive repetition she launches her chakram through an elaborate chain of ricochets.
The maneuver knocks the poison away before Hermia can drink it and prevents the other fatal accidents and confrontations. With the immediate tragedy averted, the family leaders agree to peace and permit the young couple to marry.
For the first time, Xena wakes to a genuinely new morning. Joxer, Gabrielle and Argo are alive, and the town can move beyond the day that had trapped them.
