Plot summary
Gabrielle rescues a woman she believes is Xena from being burned by bandits, only to learn that she is Leah, a priestess of Hestia who happens to look identical to her friend. Leah says the goddess told her to confront the attackers in warrior clothing. Xena suspects that someone has used her devotion to arrange her death.
At the temple they find another familiar double, Meg, impersonating Leah beside the high priest Balius. Meg believes that she is merely helping cover the priestess' unexplained absence. Xena sends Leah to hide at Meg's tavern and begins investigating through another exchange of identities.
Balius is secretly a follower of a rival religion. He intends to eliminate Leah and destroy the Hestian community from within. Meg inadvertently reveals Leah's hiding place, and temple guards attack the tavern. Xena, Gabrielle and Meg's companions repel them, but Joxer's attempt to rescue the apparent priestess draws him into danger at the temple.
The impersonations continue as Balius prepares a ceremony with poisoned wine. Believing Leah to be Meg, he orders the real priestess to lead it. Xena gets inside, frees Joxer and moves to stop the plot.
Leah uses the Hestian language to warn the worshippers. They pretend to collapse after drinking, allowing Balius to announce that their goddess has abandoned them. A second instruction brings them back up as they spit out the wine, exposing the deception.
Xena and the others defeat the guards and stop Balius from escaping with Leah. The community survives, and Leah thanks the women whose very different lives she had initially judged. The shared faces have caused chaos, but their cooperation prevents the massacre.
