Plot summary
Gabrielle wants to pass her Amazon right of caste to Eve, making the child a princess. Xena is uneasy about exposing her daughter to a culture shaped by violence, but accepts Gabrielle's wish to recognize Eve as family. They travel to the Northern Amazons.
The tribe is mourning warriors killed by the Samite nomads, including Yakut and Amarice, and is preparing revenge. Its new leader Cyane welcomes the proposed initiation. Gabrielle temporarily assumes the role of queen while Xena, excluded from the ceremony, encounters Yakut's spirit.
Visions reveal the tribe's distant origins. The Tretolmecs once lived in constant conflict with neighboring cannibals. Their expected savior, the Atma, proved to be a girl named Cyane brought from the future. She helped bring peace through the enemy leader's sympathetic son rather than simply defeating the other people. The tribe became the Amazons and named later leaders in her honor, while the vengeful Samsara rejected that peace.
Yakut warns Xena that Eve will be bathed in blood during the initiation. With the spirit's help, Xena recovers the sacred Atma dagger from the netherworld and rushes to stop the ritual. Gabrielle is equally shocked by what the ceremony requires.
The dagger lets the tribe share visions of its past. Xena and Gabrielle urge the Amazons to honor their dead by helping others rather than creating more deaths. The women set aside their immediate plans for vengeance.
Eve is welcomed into the tribe with water instead of blood, turning the initiation into a commitment to new life rather than another expression of inherited violence.
