Plot summary
A summons from Ares brings Xena, Gabrielle and Eve into an Amazon conflict. The former god has lost his immortality but concealed that weakness from his army. He believes the Amazons possess ambrosia that can restore him and has ordered attacks on their territory.
The Furies are manipulating him by appearing as Xena, Gabrielle and Eve. They hope to turn him against the real Xena, avenge the Olympians and claim power for themselves. When Xena and Gabrielle visit his camp and are mistaken for their doubles, they recognize the deception.
At the Amazon village, Varia identifies Eve as Livia. Eve admits that she once attacked the Amazons, killing warriors and selling others into slavery. Queen Marga demands her death, but the advancing army interrupts the judgment. Eve later frees herself and saves Varia from a sniper's arrow, giving the Amazons reason to reconsider her.
Xena tries to tell Ares that the Furies are driving his rage, but their influence prevents him from listening. She realizes that they can be drawn out if he believes he has killed her. Challenging him to a fight near a cold pond, she throws her chakram and lets the struggle carry them into the water.
Ares holds her under until she appears dead. The Furies emerge, only to be struck down by the returning chakram. Released from their control, Ares pulls Xena ashore and helps Gabrielle revive her.
The immediate war ends. Eve is pardoned after protecting the Amazons, and Ares acknowledges that he was deceived. He and Xena share a farewell kiss before parting, with his mortality still part of his new life.
