Season 1
1. Welcome to Republic City
After Aang 's death, the Order of the White Lotus discovers the new Avatar, Korra, in the Southern Water Tribe. By the age of 17, Korra has mastered waterbending, earthbending, and firebending, but cannot yet airbend. Kept under lock and key by White Lotus for her own protection, she is frustrated by her isolation from the rest of the world, and anticipates completing her training with Master Tenzin, the son of Katara and Aang, and the only airbending master. However Tenzin also serves on the council of the United Republic (a nation created by Avatar Aang and Firelord Zuko ) and civil unrest in the capital, Republic City, forces him to postpone her training.
Unwilling to live under the strict confines of her life with the White Lotus anymore, Korra absconds from her compound on her polar bear-dog Naga and stows away on a vessel bound for Republic City. After a clash with triads, she is arrested by Republic City's metalbending police force, until Tenzin bails her out and allows her to stay with him. Meanwhile, the anti-bender "Equalist" movement's numbers are swelling due to inequities between benders and non-benders and its extremist militant arm is beginning to kidnap benders.
2. A Leaf in the Wind
Korra is reading about pro-bending and desires to see it, but Tenzin refuses, calling the sport a mockery of the noble tradition of bending. He reiterates that Korra's only purpose in Republic City is to complete her airbending training and asks her to remain on the island. Multiple sentries from the Order of the White Lotus are present to ensure Korra learns in a calm environment, free from distractions. Although she begrudgingly agrees, she looks out onto the city, desiring to see more of it.
As the two head out to train, Tenzin states that Korra's apparent difficulty in learning airbending is due to it being opposite to her personality, a statement which Korra sadly agrees with. In the training area, Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo are eager to see the Avatar start her training as an airbender. A tool that Tenzin states to be fundamental in teaching the aspects of airbending is present. Jinora explains that Korra needs to weave her way through the gates to the other side without touching them, and Ikki adds that the gates will be spinning as she tries to complete the task.
Tenzin starts them in motion and sends a leaf through the mechanism. He states that Korra needs to be like the leaf and flow through the gates, in a series of circular movements demonstrated by Jinora. As Jinora demonstrates, Tenzin adds that Korra needs to be ready to shift upon meeting resistance at a moment's notice through the gates.
Korra starts after Jinora enhances the speed of the gates with a blast of air. However, she is knocked around constantly. Her second try proves just as unsuccessful, and Jinora advises her not to try to force her way through. Ikki says to dance like the wind, and Meelo reiterates his father's earlier advice regarding the leaf. After Korra falls in a daze, Tenzin simply sighs and shakes his head. That night, Korra tries to airbend at a newspaper image of Lin Beifong but fails and firebends at it in frustration. After thinking and telling Naga that she just might not be fit to airbend, Korra hears a radio broadcast of a pro-bending match nearby where the guards were excitedly listening to it. However, Tenzin shuts off the radio near the match's climax after discovering Korra listening in from the roof.
The next morning, Tenzin leads a meditation session with Korra and his children. Korra states she thinks she is doing it wrong, but Tenzin replies that there is nothing to do and tells her simply to let her mind and spirit be free, representative of air being the element of freedom. Korra laughs as her mentor emphasizes freedom despite forbidding her to leave the island or even listen to the radio. Tenzin tells her to copy Meelo, though Korra points out that the young airbender is actually asleep, prompting Tenzin to claim that his son has the "relaxing" part down. With Korra still frustrated at her lack of progress, Tenzin consoles her that everything will sink in over time, though Korra is unconvinced and leaves to get lychee juice instead.
At nightfall, Korra sneaks off the island and swims to the Pro-bending Arena. She finds a training gym but is discovered by its owner, Toza, who threatens to take her to security for trespassing. A pro-bender walks in and states that Korra is with him, and they leave the area while Toza resumes working out. He takes her out to a balcony overlooking the battle arena and reveals himself to be Bolin. Another bender, Mako, who is Bolin's older brother, tells the earthbender to get Korra out of the locker room. However, Bolin thinks there is something special about her and introduces her to Mako, who simply ignores Korra and tells Bolin to get ready for their match.
Bolin and Mako's team, inclusive of a waterbender named Hasook, is revealed to be the upstart Fire Ferrets, who, according to the radio broadcaster, have surpassed expectations to that point, but face their toughest challenge against the Golden Temple Tigerdillos. The match starts out fiercely, with Mako demonstrating himself to be cool under fire. However, the Tigerdillos quickly knock Hasook and Bolin back to zone two, and Mako is knocked back a short time after. Hasook is completely knocked out of the ring seconds later, with Mako and Bolin falling back to zone three before the round ends in favor of the Tigerdillos.
In round two, the Fire Ferrets are quickly forced to zone two, but this time, they respond and force the Tigerdillos back enough to win the round and tie the match. However, in round three, Hasook is knocked into Bolin before they are each knocked out of the ring. However, Mako holds his ground, forces the Tigerdillos to drain themselves, and knocks two of their opponents out of the ring, creating a one-on-one showdown for the round and the match versus an earthbender. Mako emerges from the smoke and dust of the fight and knocks his opponent out of the ring, earning a hat trick and clinching the match for the Fire Ferrets.
After the match, Korra is enthralled and enthusiastically shoves Bolin. However, Mako and Hasook dispute, and the latter throws his helmet down and exits the locker room. Korra tries to praise Mako, but he remains annoyed that she is around. Bolin agrees to show an eager Korra the basics. He expresses uncertainty as to relating his earthbending with her waterbending, but Korra states she is an earthbender, too. Bolin apologizes for assuming due to her Water Tribe outfit, but Korra states she is a water-, earth-, and firebender, confusing Bolin. Mako concludes that Korra is the Avatar, which stuns his brother.
In the gym, Korra whips earth coins into a net, again impressing Bolin. However, he states that she is too flat-footed and needs to be on her toes, dig in, and strike. Korra's second attempt proves more successful, causing Bolin to state that she is a natural. Mako frustratingly retires for the night, and it is revealed that the brothers live upstairs in the attic.
Back on Air Temple Island, Korra's airbending training is still not going well. After her frustration boils over, she destroys the training gates with firebending. Maddened by Korra's outburst, Tenzin reveals that the mechanism was a two thousand year old relic. Korra continues to state that things just are not sinking in, but Tenzin replies that this is not something she can just force. Korra angrily states that she believes Tenzin is a poor teacher and walks away. Meelo says the same with a goofy smile and kicks the pieces of the relic around, while Ikki and Jinora comfortingly hug their father.
At sunset, Pema serves dinner to the group and notices Korra is missing. Tenzin reveals he is growing frustrated with Korra, but Pema says that he needs to give Korra some space. Tenzin asks his kids to promise him their teenage years will not be like this, to which Jinora emotionlessly states that she will make no such promises.
Korra returns to the Pro-bending Arena and finds out Hasook has not shown up for the match, which will force the Fire Ferrets to be disqualified if a replacement is not found in two minutes. Korra mentions her desire to fill in, but Mako refuses to allow it, saying he would rather forfeit than look like a fool. Korra states to the match official that the team is in, to which Bolin agrees. The match begins and Korra quickly waterbends a member of the opposing team out of the ring from the sides.
She is given a one-zone penalty as she can only knock benders out from the back of the ring. She complies with the penalty and the match resumes, but earns herself another one when her foot crosses into zone one, sending her back to zone three. The Platypus Bears win round one and start round two with a flurry of attacks on Korra. She stops an attack with earthbending, confusing the official. The radio announcer learns that she is the Avatar, much to the audience's shock. The broadcast is heard by Tenzin on the island when he asked the guards if any of them saw Korra, angering him, and he sets off to bring her home.
The referee states that Korra may continue only if she solely uses waterbending. After the match resumes, she is quickly knocked out of the ring by a barrage of attacks. When she emerges from the water, she discovers Tenzin waiting for her, demanding she return to the island. Korra refuses, believing she does not need airbending which leads to an argument ensueing, with Tenzin stating the Avatar must learn all the elements. Korra responds by stating that what she needs to learn is modern fighting, prompting Tenzin to retort that bending is not all physical. After this, Korra returns to the match leaving a furious Tenzin behind.
The Platypus Bears take round two and dominate round three as well. Mako and Bolin are cornered, and Korra is pushed to the edge of zone three. However, at that moment, Korra begins to dodge the Platypus Bears' attacks by employing defensive maneuvers similar to an airbender's movements, catching Tenzin's attention. The Platypus Bears exhaust themselves, and the Fire Ferrets, still energetic, overwhelm them and score a knockout. Tenzin is briefly excited of their victory, but catches himself in the act and settles down. Because of their win, the Fire Ferrets have advanced to the championship tournament. Mako is finally impressed with Korra, but she refuses his credit, saying she was taught those moves by someone else.
Korra returns to the island, where the training gates are being reset by the Air Acolytes. She spots Tenzin and apologizes, saying she was frustrated with herself and took it out on him. Tenzin also says he owes an apology to Korra for having lost his patience while trying to teach her some and continues to say there are no hard feelings between the two. He adds that she was impressive in the match, moving like an airbender. Korra bids him a good night and adds she has permanently joined the Fire Ferrets, and they will be competing in a tournament in a couple of weeks much to Tenzin's dismay.
As night falls over Republic City, Mako looks out toward Air Temple Island, and Korra, in turn, lays her eyes upon the Pro-bending Arena.
3. The Revelation
The Fire Ferrets are practicing early in the morning in the arena's gym when Butakha, the owner of the pro-bending league, comes to pay them their winnings from their last match. However, because of debts that Mako and Bolin owe, such as Korra's equipment, apartment rent, gym equipment, and groceries, neither of them receive any of the money. He also tells them that they need to pay thirty thousand yuans in order to be eligible to participate in the tournament. After discovering that none of them, including Korra, have any spare cash on hand, Bolin suggests having Pabu do circus tricks on the street to raise the money. Mako dismisses his idea and says he will take care of the problem himself.
Bolin takes Pabu to Central City Station anyway and puts him on show, but only manages to earn one yuan. A gangster whom Bolin recognizes as Shady Shin pulls up in his flashy Satomobile and offers him a job helping the Triple Threat Triad with "security". Though Bolin is initially reluctant, stating that Mako had told him to stay away from the Triads, Shin is able to easily bribe him with a large sum of yuans. Meanwhile, Mako has found a job at a power plant that requires him to generate lightning. When he gets home he finds that Bolin is absent, and assumes that he must have gone to visit Korra upon seeing Air Temple Island.
On Air Temple Island, Korra is in the middle of a more successful airbending practice session than her earlier trials. Just as she finishes, Jinora and Ikki notice Mako approaching and start prodding Korra with questions about him, especially whether she has a crush on him. Embarrassed, Korra quickly earthbends them away before turning to face Mako. While the two girls land safely with their airbending, Mako asks Korra if she has seen Bolin, but Korra answers negatively. She insists and subsequently offers to help Mako find Bolin with Naga 's tracking skills.
Together, they go to Central City Station, where Bolin usually hangs out. Mako approaches one of the street kids, Skoochy, who only gives information for a price. After Mako gives him some yuans, Skoochy tells them that he saw Bolin leaving earlier with Shady Shin and mentions that other criminal gangs are preparing for a turf war. Fearing that Bolin will be caught in the middle, Mako, Korra, and Naga race to the Threat Triad's headquarters. On the way, they find Pabu, but upon arriving, they notice the building mysteriously deserted and the furniture broken.
They hear a sound, exit through the back, and spot a group of masked individuals carrying off several triad members in a truck with Bolin in tow. Korra and Mako chase them on Naga, but are stopped when two thugs block their chi, leaving them motionless on the ground. Naga and Pabu scare off their attackers, and Mako explains to Korra that the assailants were Equalists, a group that wants to end all bending in order to create equality.
The two continue looking all night until Korra decides to seek out the Equalist protester she saw in the park when she first arrived in Republic City. While they wait for him to arrive, Korra asks Mako about what happened to his parents, to which he answers that they were mugged by a firebender when he was eight, and now Bolin is the only family he has left. The two later fall asleep against each other. They are abruptly awakened in the morning by the protester's usual Equalist propaganda. Korra angrily interrogates him and learns that Amon, the leader of the Equalists, is holding a rally known as "The Revelation".
When a policeman comes by to investigate the commotion, the protester claims that the Avatar is oppressing him, so she and Mako flee with a few leaflets. At a trolley stop, they try figuring out where the Equalists are holding the rally, but there is no location listed. Mako quickly realizes that there is a clue on the back of the leaflets matching the map of the city, pinpointing the rally's location.
That night, Korra and Mako go to the rally disguised as a couple so as not to draw attention. They show the leaflet to the doorman, who allows them inside the building. The rally begins as Amon and his followers reveal themselves on the stage. Amon begins by sharing his life story with the audience, saying that he and his nonbending family lived normal lives on a small farm until they were harassed by a firebender. His father tried standing up to him and was cut down, along with the rest of his family.
The firebender subsequently burned Amon's face, forcing him to wear a mask for the rest of his life. Amon also tells the crowd that the spirits have granted him the ability to take away a person's bending permanently. Amon demonstrates this ability on the leader of the Triple Threat Triad, Lightning Bolt Zolt, causing his lightning to slowly degrade into fire, and finally stopping it completely. With this, he declares that the era of bending has come to an end and that a revolution has begun.
Unwilling to let this happen to Bolin, Mako comes up with a plan to save him. He tells Korra to create a distraction using the steam from the nearby boilers while he rescues his brother. Just as Korra works her sabotage, she is spotted by the doorman and, when questioned about what she was doing, weakly claims she was looking for the bathroom. Seeing as her opponent does not believe her, Korra quickly subdues the doorman by hand-to-hand combat, ending the fight by slamming him against the boiler, which consequently releases steam. She quickly waterbends the steam toward the stage, creating a cover which catches the Equalists off guard, just before Amon can use his technique on Bolin.
As the two brothers make their escape, they are attacked by Amon's second-in-command, the Lieutenant, who subdues them with his electrified kali sticks. As he declares that there is no place in the world for benders anymore, Korra earthbends him into a wall. Naga promptly runs by to scoop up the trio. The Equalists try giving chase, but Amon calls them off, ordering them to let the trio go, stating that the Avatar is the best person to spread word of his power.
Korra later returns to Air Temple Island. Tenzin tells her he was worried and was about to send the Order of the White Lotus to find her. He also asks if she had found Bolin. Korra replies yes, but tells him what she saw at the Equalists' assembly. Though at first Tenzin finds the thought of Amon possessing such an ability impossible, as only the Avatar had mastered it, he quickly believes Korra and becomes clearly concerned, ominously stating that "the revolution is now more dangerous than ever. No bender is safe."
4. The Voice in the Night
Republic City Councilman Tarrlok creates a task force to capture Amon, and eventually recruits the reluctant Korra. Mako gains a paramour in Asami Sato, the daughter of industrialist Hiroshi Sato, who sponsors the Fire Ferrets in the competition. After some success on the task force, Korra challenges Amon to a duel. She is ambushed and captured by Equalists, but Amon, not wishing to make her a martyr, does not take away her bending but implies that he will eventually do so. Shortly after, Tenzin finds her, deeply traumatized and terrified as a consequence of the attack.
5. The Spirit of Competition
The Fire Ferrets are practicing together before the start of the tournament in the Pro-bending Arena 's gym by barraging each other with their respective elements to test their reaction times. Their skills matched, they are all knocked down by one another simultaneously, much to their amusement. The team utters their pleasure in being able to practice again together, causing Bolin to point out that Korra joined their team before she entered the task force. They huddle together for a pre-tournament inspirational talk from Mako. Just as they exclaim that they are ready to win the tournament, Asami contradicts them, pointing out that they would need the new team uniforms with the Future Industries logo in order to be completely ready.
Mako greets her lovingly, the two rubbing their noses together. Korra cringes at this in disgust, but regains her composure before anyone notices, and gives a friendly wave off to the couple as they leave for their lunch date. Being the only two remaining in the gym, Bolin emphasizes to Korra that they are currently alone together in an attempt to get closer romantically to her. However, she quickly leaves with the excuse of airbending practice with Tenzin, much to his disappointment.
That night, while giving Pabu a bath, Bolin casually asks Mako what he thinks of Korra as a girlfriend. Responding that she is great, Mako tells his brother that he thinks Asami makes more sense as a girlfriend for him at the moment. When Bolin points out that he was asking on his own behalf, Mako rapidly attempts to rectify his statement, claiming that he knew that, and proceeds to say that he does not think Korra was great girlfriend material, but more like a good "pal". Shocked by that statement, Bolin exclaims that he and Korra are perfect for each other and gives multiple reasons to back up that claim.
When he ends saying that he will ask Korra out despite what Mako thinks, his brother tells him that dating a teammate just is not smart, especially not during a tournament, since they would all need to focus on the matches at hand. Seemingly agreeing with his brother's statements, Bolin mutters to Pabu that he was talking about real love, something he did not think Mako understood.
Meanwhile, at Air Temple Island, Korra, Jinora, and Ikki are feeding the ring-tailed winged lemurs, when Jinora suddenly inquires about Korra's romantic progress with the "tall, dreamy firebender -boy" as they had been spending a lot of time together lately. Trying to act casual, Korra brushes the question aside, claiming that she is not interested in Mako at all, hiding behind the excuse that he is dating the "prissy, beautiful, elegant, rich girl". However, her tone of voice and body language reveal that she does care about him, and she asks the children for their opinion on what to do next in the hypothetical case that she would care about Mako.
Jinora gladly offers some of her book-gathered wisdom about a heroine who burned down an entire country and committed suicide by jumping into a volcano after her love remained unanswered. Jinora proclaims the story to be "so romantic", a feeling shared by neither Korra nor Ikki. Ikki immediately utters that she knows a better way to win a boy's heart, namely to brew a love potion of rainbows and sunsets. When Korra answers that the "volcano is starting to make more sense to [her] now", the threesome is startled by Pema 's laughter.
Slightly embarrassed, Korra turns around, inquiring how long Pema has been standing there. When she states "long enough", the pregnant woman proceeds to share her own relationship experience, telling the story of how she was in love with Tenzin while he was still in a relationship with another woman. Stating that it was unbearable to see her soul mate spend his life with the wrong woman, she had confessed her love to him, leading to the start of their own relationship and family. Korra ponders about Pema's story for a few seconds, a smile donning her face.
After Shiro Shinobi expresses his excitement for the start of the Pro-bending Tournament, the Fire Ferrets face off against the Red Sands Rabaroos in the opening match. The Fire Ferrets manage to defeat their opponents with ease, displaying a high level of collaboration and much improvement since the first time they fought together. After the match, Mako states that they were really "connecting out there", an opportunity Korra seizes to talk to Mako about her feelings for him. She casually answers that she feels like the two of them have also been connecting very well out of the ring.
Sensing Mako is not entirely catching her drift, Korra lays her feelings out on the table, blurting out that she really likes Mako and that she feels like they were meant for each other. However, he gently says that he does not see her romantically the same way and that he is with Asami. Embarrassed, Korra states that he should just forget that she said anything and moves away from him. That moment, Asami enters, congratulating the team on their amazing victory and giving Mako a kiss on the cheek, saddening Korra even more.
As she moves to leave the locker room, she is halted by Bolin, who invites her to go on a "sort of date situation" with him. She initially declines, stating she does not feel really date-worthy, something he immediately refutes by claiming that she is the "smartest, funniest, toughest, buffest, talentedest, incrediblest girl in the world". Flattered, Korra accepts his offer, seeking to have some fun. The two leave on their date, much to Mako's annoyance, who glares after them.
The two take Naga toward Narook's Seaweed Noodlery, where they heartily enjoy their authentic Water Tribe noodle dinner. Bolin uses the fact that they both adore Water Tribe food as another reason that they would be so great together as a couple. However, Korra misses the intent of the comment as she notices how Tahno, the White Falls Wolfbats ' waterbender, glares at them from another table. Asking about his identity, Bolin tells her who he is and advises her not to make eye contact with him, something she blatantly ignores.
Tahno reacts to Korra's challenging attitude, and he comes over to the two. Bolin warns Korra not to mess with him as he is "a nasty dude", but as soon as Tahno and his gang of followers reach their table, he starts to provoke Korra. Annoyed by his suggestion that he could give her some "private lessons" on how to bend like a pro, she stands up, threatening to fight him. Bolin whispers her a warning to ignore Tahno's provocation, since fighting out of the arena would disqualify the team from the tournament.
Following Bolin's warning, she whistles for Naga instead, who promptly sticks her head through the restaurant's window, growling fiercely at Tahno, severely scaring him, forcing him to cower back. Trying to maintain some of his composure, Tahno and the rest of his posse leave, much to Bolin's amusement and admiration. After Tahno's interference, the two continue their date by having a drink and a good laugh in a bar, and going to Harmony Tower where they could spot out several sites of Republic City.
When Korra makes her way back to the Pro-bending Arena for their quarterfinal match, she finds Mako awaiting her on the stairs at the entrance. He asks her what kind of game she is playing with Bolin, as he is convinced that she is only going out with his brother to get back at him. Korra honestly refutes that accusation by pointing out that they are only having fun, while wondering why Mako would care anyway. Mako says that he is only watching out for his little brother and does not want his feelings to get hurt for dating a teammate.
Something starts to dawn on Korra and she calls his reaction out to be sprouting from his jealousy, claiming that Mako does have feelings for her. Attempting to get him to admit to his true feelings, their argument quickly gets out of hand with them shouting at each other before storming off inside the arena.
The argument has an effect in their next match against the Boar-q-pines as the team does not connect well anymore with each other, not feeling the pace of the game nor the rhythm of the movements of the teammates, and they quickly lose the first round. Noticing this, Bolin tries to motivate his teammates and steps up his attacks, narrowly notching the second round. After the third round ends in a tie, Bolin, seeing Mako is not focused, overrules Mako's decision to be the fighter in the tiebreaker and takes his place instead, thus choosing earth as the element with which to fight. In a quick but fierce match, he successfully defeats Chang, the Boar-q-pines' earthbender, clinching the match for the Fire Ferrets, and securing a place for the Fire Ferrets in the semifinal.
After the match, Korra was standing by herself on a dock just outside the Pro-bending Arena, where Mako finds her. He addresses her, stating they need to talk. When he starts to tell her how infuriating she can be sometimes, Korra halts him midway, telling him to save his breath as she felt that he had already made it clear to her how he felt about her. However, he refutes her, saying that he had not and proceeds to say that he thinks Korra is pretty amazing. When Korra asks point-blank if he does like her, Mako answers positive, but also adds that he is confused as he likes Asami as well, and describes the entire situation as "complicated".
Korra, however, takes this opportunity and launches forward, passionately kissing him. First taken aback, Mako settles in the kiss and returns it. When they break, they both look rather pleased, however, the feeling quickly subsides as they notice that Bolin had been standing there with a bouquet of flowers in his hand, watching the entire scene. Heartbroken, Bolin bursts out in tears and runs off. Mako, blaming Korra for the entire ordeal, becomes angry with her and chases after Bolin.
The next morning, Mako goes to Narook's Seaweed Noodlery, to see if Bolin is there. He asks Naruk, an employee of the restaurant if he has seen Bolin, he points to the table by the window. He sees Bolin slumped over a table sleeping between stacks of empty noodle bowls with Pabu sleeping in one of them. Which makes it obvious that he has spent the night. As Mako tries to comfort him and places a hand on his shoulder, the ill-stricken Bolin shrugs it off and hysterically cries out exclaiming that Mako is no longer his brother, but rather a "brother-betrayer".
Wallowing in his sadness, he states that Pabu is his only remaining trustee and the only one who still loves him. Mako reminds him that the upcoming match is one of the most important matches in their career, however, Bolin keeps refusing to come with him, calling him out to be a traitor. Fed up, the older brother simply carries Bolin over his shoulder and exits the restaurant, blaming Bolin for the entire ordeal as he had told him that dating a teammate was a bad idea.
Later that night, Korra finds the two brothers already dressed for the match in the locker room, though Bolin is hunched over in sadness and Mako is completely ignoring her. Shiro Shinobi predicts the semifinal to be a "pulse-pounding" match, as he could not think of two teams more evenly matched when it came to age, size, and strength than the Fire Ferrets and the Bau Ling Buzzard Wasps. However, his statement is quickly proven wrong as the Fire Ferrets are quickly pushed back into the third zone due to poor group communication, lack of teamwork, and internal struggles, but they only manage to avoid a total knockout due to the time running out.
After losing the second round, during which Mako accidentally hit Bolin in the back with a fire blast, causing the earthbender to lose his focus and being knocked off the platform, and Korra performing a foul on the opposing firebender and bending at the referee in anger, earning herself a yellow fan, Mako and Bolin give up hope. Before the third round, Korra attempts to bring back some of the former team unity and motivate her teammates for one last effort, fearing that they would regret it later if they would not give it their all now.
However, the brothers are quickly knocked back a zone, and after Bolin takes an earth coin to the shoulder and ends up injured, they are both knocked out of the ring, leaving Korra to fend for herself.
As Bolin struggles to get out of the water, he is lent a helping hand by Mako. On the way up in the elevator, the two brothers apologize to each other for their divide over the Avatar, and watch Korra continue to keep their slim hopes alive, dodging every element the Buzzard Wasps throw at her. With ten seconds remaining, Korra finally starts gaining some ground by strategically aligning the three Buzzard Wasps in a single file using some swift attacks, before hurling one final torrent at them, which sends the entire rival team out of the ring, winning the match for the Fire Ferrets with a spectacular knockout.
When Korra rejoins her teammates in the locker room, Bolin praises her for the knockout, claiming it to be the coolest thing he ever saw, and Mako thanks her for not giving up on them. The team subsequently forgives each other's mistakes, and agree to remain on friendly terms. Though Korra acknowledges that things were confusing between the three of them, she utters her hope that they could all still be friends, something of which her teammates reassure her. As they reconcile, the White Falls Wolfbats enter the locker room for their match, with Tahno taunting the Fire Ferrets. Korra confidently tells him they will defeat them in the finals if they would get that far, a statement that did not impress Tahno in the least.
While the Wolfbats fight it out in the ring, Asami enters the room to congratulate them, and Korra thanks her and her father for their sponsorship and the ensuing chance to play in the tournament at all. As Bolin writhes in pain, asking for medical attention, Korra comes to his aid. As she touches his injury, he screams out in pain again, jokingly stating that Korra has hurt him enough already. Korra laughs it off and mentions that she had been taught the art of healing by Katara, and proceeds to take care of his injury.
Reluctant at first, Bolin settles in the soothing feeling Korra's healing powers bring with them, and he listens to her apology for hurting his feelings. As they just cleared the air between them, Shiro announces the end of the match, declaring the Wolfbats to be the winners with a brutal first-round knockout. Korra and the rest of the team are shocked by the quick knockout and the sight of the opposing team members who are all seriously injured and are lifted from the ring by paramedics.
6. And the Winner is...
Amon threatens to attack the pro-bending arena if the Council does not cancel the championship. However, Chief Lin Beifong, head of Republic City's metalbending police force and Toph 's daughter, promises to protect the stadium. The Wolfbats win the match by bribing the referees to ignore foul play. After the match is over, the Equalists, having infiltrated the arena in force, neutralize Chief Beifong's metalbenders using electric gloves, and Amon strips the Wolfbats of their bending abilities before a shocked crowd. Korra and Beifong free themselves and fight the Equalists, but the Equalists escape in an airship and the arena is heavily damaged in the fray.
7. The Aftermath
Tarrlok calls for Lin Beifong's resignation as chief of police, while Mako and Bolin move into the Sato mansion. While visiting them, Korra overhears implications that Hiroshi Sato is colluding with the Equalists and informs Chief Beifong and Tenzin, who find no evidence. An Equalist claiming to be disillusioned with the war reveals that Sato has a secret factory under his mansion, used to manufacture weapons for the Equalists. When Korra, Tenzin, and Beifong discover the secret factory, they are attacked by Equalists using large combat machines built by Sato, who reveals that the source was a trap. Beifong's metalbending officers are captured and taken to Amon, but Mako, Bolin, and Asami rescue Korra, Tenzin, and Beifong. Beifong decides to resign her post and rescue her officers, while Korra offers Mako, Bolin, and Asami sanctuary on Tenzin's Air Temple Island.
8. When Extremes Meet
At his inauguration as Beifong's replacement, Police Chief Saikhan vows to support Tarrlok's task force, leading Tenzin and Korra to quarrel with Tarrlok. Korra expresses frustration with her inability to airbend, and Tenzin tells her to obtain help from her past lives. Asami, Mako, Bolin, and Korra form a new "Team Avatar", patrolling the city and capturing Equalists, to Tarrlok's disapproval. Tarrlok places all non-benders under a curfew, and orders the arrest of a mob who refuses to disperse in obedience of the curfew. Korra tries to free the unarmed civilians, and Tarrlok arrests her friends to stop her.
Later that night, she seeks Tarrlok out in private and he proposes to free her friends if she begins to fall in line with his wishes, but finding him to be corrupt, she angrily rebukes him and a bending battle ensues. Korra eventually gets the upper hand in the fight, only to have her fortunes reversed when Tarrlok reveals a dark secret: he is a bloodbender, able to manipulate human flesh through the water in the body. Tarrlok easily takes Korra captive using these skills and moves her to a cabin outside Republic City.
9. Out of the Past
Tarrlok locks Korra in a platinum box in the mountains, publicly claiming that Equalists abducted her. In response, Lin Beifong frees Korra's friends from prison and, with Tenzin's help, the five of them infiltrate the Equalist hideout, where Beifong frees her troops but an Equalist reveals that they had nothing to do with Korra's capture. Confronting Tarrlok in City Hall, a witness exposes Tarrlok's bloodbending powers, which Tarrlok uses to disable the group and escape. Meanwhile, Korra learns from Aang's past that 42 years prior, the mobster Yakone escaped trial by bloodbending the court, whereupon Aang removed his bending powers. Tarrlok confirms that he is Yakone's son, attempting to rule Republic City from a political seat rather than through crime. When Equalists track him back to Korra, his bloodbending proves ineffective against Amon, who takes away his bending. Korra escapes and reunites with Naga, who returns her to her friends.
10. Turning the Tides
After recovering from her abduction, Korra tells her story, and Tenzin asks Lin to protect his family while he attends the morning's council meeting. Tenzin is attacked at City Hall, and despite defeating his would-be abductors, he learns that the other council members have been captured by Equalists and that the city is under a full-scale attack by Equalists armed with Sato's newest weaponry and military technology. Amon's airships bomb Republic City as Tenzin reaches police headquarters and wires the United Forces, the United Republic's military, for help. Equalist 'mecha-tanks' capture Chief Saikhan and many officers.
Korra and her friends rescue Tenzin. Tenzin's wife, Pemma gives birth to her fourth child, Rohan, as Equalist airships arrive at Air Temple Island. Lin Beifong, aided by Tenzin's other three airbending children, defeats the invaders. Korra goes into hiding and Tenzin flees with his family to preserve the last airbenders. Lin destroys an airship pursuing them, but is captured and refuses to reveal Korra's whereabouts, and is stripped of her bending. Korra's team enters the city sewers and General Iroh, the grandchild of former Firelord Zuko and commander of a fleet of United Forces warships, answers Republic City's plea.
11. Skeletons in the Closet
Korra and her friends hide in hobo camp underground until Iroh's fleet arrives; but the fleet is promptly disabled by Equalist mines, aircraft, and torpedoes. Korra saves Iroh from drowning, and they regroup with the others. Korra and Mako go in search of Amon, while Iroh, Bolin and Asami sabotage the Equalist airbase to prevent the sinking of a relief fleet under Commander Bumi, Tenzin's older brother. Korra and Mako discover Tarrlok captive in Air Temple Island, where he apologizes for his treatment of Korra and reveals that Amon is his brother, Noatak, who ran away due to Yakone's mistreatment of his children. Meanwhile, the assault on the Equalists' mountain airbase goes poorly when the attackers fall prey to an electric fence.
12. Endgame
Bolin, Asami, and Iroh are captured by Hiroshi Sato and the Equalists, but rescued by Naga. While Asami and Bolin fight Hiroshi and his mecha-tanks, Iroh destroys the Equalist bombers. Korra and Mako confront Amon at an Equalist rally, and expose him as a bender. Amon denies it and reveals that he has captured Tenzin and his young family. Korra and Mako free them, but Amon overpowers Mako and Korra, and removes Korra's bending abilities except for her airbending, which she later unlocks and uses against him. Expelled by her, Amon falls into the sea, and his escape unmasks him publicly as a waterbender.
He flees Republic City, along with Tarrlok, who later explodes their boat and themselves. At the South Pole, Katara is unable to heal Korra's severance from water, earth, and fire. As Korra sits weeping at a cliff's edge, Aang's spirit fully restores her spiritual connection and bending abilities and Korra enters the Avatar State to restore Beifong's bending abilities. Everyone watches in awe and amazement with Tenzin addressing her as Avatar Korra.
Season 2
1. Rebel Spirit
Six months after the defeat of Amon and the Equalists, Korra believes she has mastered airbending, Mako works as a policeman, Bolin fares poorly in pro-bending with the new "Fire Ferrets", and Asami tries to keep Future Industries intact. Team Avatar joins Tenzin and his family in a visit to the Southern Water Tribe for the winter solstice. The festivities are disrupted by the rampage of a dark spirit, which neither Korra nor Tenzin can calm or repel. Unalaq, Korra's uncle and the chief of the Northern Water Tribe ultimately assuages the spirit's anger with a "spiritual" form of waterbending. Despite the misgivings of her father, who has a strained relationship with his brother, Korra apprentices herself to Unalaq to continue her spiritual development, rebuffing previous mentor Tenzin in the process.
2. The Southern Lights
Korra and company journey with Unalaq and his children Desna and Eska to the South Pole, where Korra is to attempt to return the long-absent Southern Lights, at Unalaq's urging. When Korra learns that her father was once banished from the Northern Water Tribe for causing a spirit rampage, and that he and Tenzin were responsible for her seclusion in her youth, she insists on Tonraq returning home, and tensions begin to grow between herself and Tenzin. At the South Pole, Korra succeeds in returning the southern lights by opening a blocked "spirit portal" one of two gateways which allows access to the spirit world and regulates the flow of spiritual energy between the two worlds.
Returning from the pole, Korra's party discover that Northern Water Tribe have come to occupy the south at Unalaq's direction, to initiate a "reunification" of the two tribes. At the Southern Air Temple, Jinora is strongly drawn to the statues of the past avatars, particular that of her grandfather Aang and an unidentified carving of another ancient Avatar.
3. Civil Wars (1)
In the Southern Water Tribe capital of Wolf Cove, many troops from the Northern Water Tribe march through the streets, telling the citizens of the South to return to their homes. When the Southerners in the street stand there and glare at the soldiers, the Northern waterbenders make short barriers of ice and push the civilians out of the way, while other waterbenders in their battleships form large walls of ice around the harbor.
At this time, Unalaq is explaining to Korra that his soldiers are there to protect the now-open spirit portal at the South Pole. He also informs Korra of another spirit portal at the North Pole that can be opened, allowing both spirits and humans to pass from one pole to another at will. Seeing the potential to reunite the tribes, Korra favors the idea.
Meanwhile, at the Southern Air Temple, Tenzin and Pema are relaxing while Kya is sitting on a rock, feeding lemurs. Bumi shows up in his underwear, ruining his brother's relaxation. Tenzin brings up how this reminds them on when they would vacation with their father as kids. Kya and Bumi rebuff this, stating that they were not there. Tenzin brings up more instances, which are all rebuffed. Tenzin, his elder brother, and sister are suddenly bickering about how Aang had spent much more time with Tenzin rather than with Bumi or Kya.
Tenzin assures them that he could have sworn they joined them on their vacations, but is soon interrupted by Jinora and Meelo, who have been riding around on air scooters. Pema soon realizes that Ikki is nowhere to be found and chastises her eldest daughter and son for teasing Ikki and causing her to run off. Tenzin is determined to find Ikki and reluctantly lets Kya and Bumi accompany him.
In Tonraq and Senna 's home, there is a meeting regarding the recent activities of the Northern soldiers. Varrick and other Southern waterbenders are determined to start a rebellion against the Northern Water Tribe for not letting them live in peace and live their own customs and views, despite Korra's attempt to explain Unalaq's actions. Tonraq tells Korra that she must talk to her uncle to put a stop to the civil war that is stirring between their tribes.
In the streets of Wolf Cove, Bolin is pulling a cart carrying Desna and Eska, while the twins discuss their hatred for the South. As the three and Pabu arrive at their destination, Bolin sarcastically comments to Eska that he will miss her when she is gone, but much to his dismay, Eska reveals her plan to move back to the North with Bolin, where they will live together in "icy bliss". Bolin decides it would be best to break up with her after receiving Mako 's counseling.
Korra confronts Unalaq and tells him that a lot of Southerners feel like their tribe is being invaded and that there could be a civil war. Unalaq explains that a civil war would further disrupt the balance between both tribes, the rest of the world and the spirits. Unalaq assures her that only the Avatar can prevent the war between them all and reunite them as one tribe, but Korra is not so sure.
Meanwhile, in the streets, passing Northern Water Tribe soldiers become agitated when three native children drop snowballs on them, and the soldiers waterbend the children off the roof in retaliation. Adult Southern waterbenders intervene, causing a standoff, until Korra arrives and attempts to alleviate the situation. Seeing this, they accuse Korra of siding with the North and a young waterbender girl throws a snowball and calls her "the worst Avatar ever". Realizing his daughter is having no success, Tonraq arrives and settles the matter by telling the Southern benders to return to their homes. He attempts to talk to Korra, but she storms away on Naga.
Back at the air temple, Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi are searching for Ikki, though in vain. Kya points out that Tenzin is not spending enough time with his children because he is too busy with his other duties, similar to how their own father had been. Tenzin walks away to avoid the subject, as Kya mentions the fact that they did not have a perfect childhood, despite what Tenzin believes.
In the Southern Water Tribe, Korra approaches Mako, explaining her frustrations with her Avatar duties. Mako responds by suggesting that she forget about everything for the time being and that they have a nice dinner. However, the dinner ends up being quite awkward, since Bolin, Desna, and Eska join them. As soon as the twins go to get some food, Bolin confesses that he could not break up with Eska due to her threatening to freeze him in a block of ice and feed him to dolphin piranhas.
Returning to Ikki's search party, Bumi is telling a story from when he was in the United Forces, though Tenzin does not believe his tale. Tenzin doubts that it can help him, while Bumi replies it is supposed to inspire them. The three come across a large waterfall, and Bumi starts climbing down rather than taking the path, insisting that it will be faster. Kya warns him of the danger of trying to scale down a wet cliff face in the dark, but Bumi continues and dares them to follow, saying it "should be no problem for a couple of benders." Kya and Tenzin leap past Bumi, easily reaching the bottom in a few seconds using their bending.
They tease Bumi and offer to help him down, but he refuses. Soon afterwards, Bumi slips and falls, hitting his head on an outcropping before splashing into the water at the base of the waterfall.
At the Southern Water Tribe, Korra runs into her mother, Senna, who asks how she feels about the tensions between their two tribes, and specifically between her and her father. Korra tries to explain that all she had ever really wanted was to be the Avatar and that she is still furious with her father for having lied to her about his banishment and about his and Tenzin's keeping her confined in the Southern Water Tribe as a child. Senna tries to assure Korra that she and Tonraq merely wanted her to live a normal life until Korra was ready to fulfill her duties as the Avatar.
Korra insists that she cannot standby and let their tribes go to war. Senna reminds her that the North and South have been at odds for decades before she was born and she cannot expect to undo them in a day. Korra storms off angrily, ready to stop the growing rebellion Varrick is leading, of which she believes her father is a part. When she arrives at Unalaq's residence, she sees Northern soldiers tied up and rushes to find her uncle, but she sees masked men have taken her uncle captive.
After a futile attempt to negotiate with the rebels, Korra chases them, doing everything she can to slow them down without hurting them. She finally catches up to the man who she thinks is her father, but it turns out he is not and her father did not actually join the rebellion. Korra convinces Unalaq to give the rebels a fair trial rather than throwing them and Varrick in jail.
Meanwhile, Kya is healing Bumi's head injury while telling him that he cannot do everything a bender can, causing Bumi to retort that Kya is not his mother and therefore she does not get to tell him what he can and cannot do. Tenzin remarks that Bumi is the oldest of them, but always acted like the youngest, forcing him to become the responsible one. In response, Kya asks Tenzin where he was after Aang died, because she was the only family member who packed up and moved her whole life to be with Katara during that difficult time. At this, Tenzin accuses Kya of spending years of flitting around the world, trying to find herself, while he was carrying the future of an entire culture on his shoulders. Bumi mocks Tenzin, describing his struggles as vacationing around the world with their dad.
Tenzin realizes that the difference between his upbringing and his siblings' is at the root of their current conflict, which Kya confirms by stating that Tenzin thinks he is "some savior who has to carry on Dad's legacy". Tenzin asks who else is going to do it if not him, prompting Bumi and Kya to remind him that they are Aang's kids too and all of them are carrying on his legacy. Kya and Bumi express regret at coming on this vacation, and Tenzin tells them siblings to check for Ikki back at the temple to give him some space. They do so, while Tenzin continues the search by himself.
Korra approaches her parents and apologizes to her father for thinking he was involved with the rebels and for the pain she caused her parents. Tonraq subsequently apologizes for holding Korra back, and Senna reveals her and Tonraq's initial plans to have a normal life, which changed when they found out Korra was the Avatar. Senna stated that they had always knew that there would come a day when the world needed Korra and Korra would no longer need them. However, Korra denies it, claiming that she would always need them and gives her parents a hug. But their family moment is interrupted, as Unalaq enters the hut with several Northern soldiers and arrests Tonraq and Senna for allegedly plotting against him, much to Korra's surprise.
4. Civil Wars (2)
In the outskirts of Wolf Cove, Tonraq and Senna are being taken away in a prison truck that is waiting outside of their house. Korra is standing outside trying to convince Unalaq that he is making a mistake, but Unalaq assures Korra that there is nothing to worry about due to the fairness of the trial that will be assured by Judge Hotah.
Meanwhile, Mako, Bolin, and Asami are waiting for Varrick in his mansion to close the deal with Future Industries. Just as Bolin comments that Eska cannot find him there, she, Desna, and several Northern waterbenders walk in looking for Varrick and inform the three members of Team Avatar that Varrick is a traitor as well as Korra's parents and they all are to stand trial. Eska, Desna, and the waterbenders leave finding no trace of Varrick, but before Eska walks out she insists that Bolin bow to her as she leaves, which he unquestioningly does while referring to her as his sweet koalaotter.
Asami tells Bolin that he has to stand up for himself and tell Eska the truth about how he really feels. Varrick's voice suddenly interrupts, claiming that Bolin should disappear rather than be honest, like he did. Varrick reveals that he is hiding inside his stuffed platypus bear, Ping-Ping, along with Zhu Li, but he refuses to come out until he knows it is safe. Mako leaves to find Korra while Varrick gives Bolin some cash by means of the platypus bear's backside, noting that Bolin can use bribery to win the trial for the rebels, since it is most likely rigged by Unalaq, to which Bolin agrees.
At the Southern Air Temple, Tenzin is still looking for Ikki while being bothered by ring-tailed winged lemurs. He hears Ikki's voice from a nearby cave, where she is having a "civilized breakfast" with four young flying bison. Ikki is in the middle of saying a blessing, showing her thanks for the food, her new best friends and that Jinora and Meelo are not there, when Tenzin walks in and asks to join her. He takes a seat next to Blueberry Spicehead and is introduced to the other three, Princess Rainbow, Twinkle Starchild, and Juniper Lightning Bug, whom Ikki introduces as her new brothers and sisters. They also become Tenzin's new "brothers and sisters" after Ikki asks them if it is all right.
In a courtroom in Wolf Cove, Bolin explains to Asami that he gave some people all the money, told them to "take care of it", and winked at them. Asami notices the ordinary men in the crowd to whom he is referring and, knowing his mistake, slaps her forehead with the palm of her hand. When the bailiff called the court to order and presented Judge Hotah, Bolin realizes that he should have bribed Hotah, earning him a sarcastic agreement from Asami. The trial begins as Unalaq steps forward, informing everyone that he was attacked by rebels in the night while he was sleeping and that he awoke to find that Avatar Korra had saved him.
Korra is questioned about the rebel meeting that had taken place to discuss a civil war. Korra answers honestly, explaining that all of the people on trial had attended the meeting, including her mother and father. In between Bolin's objections, she reveals the information that the meeting took place in her parents' house and was led by Tonraq and Varrick, but immediately objects afterward, claiming that her parents are nonetheless innocent. The judge retires from the courtroom, stating that he will return with his final decision.
Bolin steps out to try once more to break up with Eska, explaining that the spark they had is now gone. Eska agrees that there is a chasm and plans to fill it with marriage, marked by the betrothal necklace she gives to him with spikes and a skull charm on it. Judge Hotah returns and declares Senna's innocence, but informs the others that they have been found guilty of treason and each of them is sentenced to death, including Tonraq. Enraged, Korra threatens to kill Hotah if he carries out the sentence, but Unalaq interrupts saying that he will talk to the judge, and as a result he has their sentence commuted to life in prison, for which Korra thanks her uncle.
Back at the air temple, Tenzin and Ikki are still in the cave as Tenzin is enjoying not being yelled at or told that he is delusional. Ikki wants to invite Kya and Bumi, but Tenzin insists that they would "spoil [their] good mood". Ikki objects, commenting that Kya is nice and pretty, and that Bumi is funny. Tenzin takes this opportunity to explain to Ikki the difficulties of being part of a family by explaining that Meelo is funny too, and Jinora can be sweet and gentle. Ikki realizes that family will always be there when needed despite these difficulties and they both agree to go back, but also to return to visit the sky bison.
Korra and Senna enter Tonraq's cell at the Southern Water Tribe prison and are relieved to find out that he is all right. Korra wants to break her father out of prison, but he objects, informing her that saving him would start a war, in which case the North would crush the South. He assures her that he will be all right and makes her promise that she will not do anything rash. Korra and Senna return to their home, where Korra comforts her mother, who feels helpless.
On a nearby mountainside, Korra chases down Judge Hotah while riding Naga and forces him out of his car, insisting he release her father from prison. The judge reveals that he cannot do that because he was simply following Unalaq's orders. Korra angrily demands that Hotah explain himself, but the judge tries to evade the question, stating that he has already said too much. He relents, however, after Korra threatens him by placing his head inside of Naga's mouth, informing the young Avatar that Unalaq had told him what to say but needed the trial to appear fair. Korra also finds out that Unalaq had only freed her mother and changed her father's sentence to keep her on his side while still getting his brother out of the way. Judge Hotah also blurts out that Unalaq was the one responsible for her father's banishment.
Inside the statue room at the Southern Air Temple, Bumi is talking to his father 's statue, apologizing for not being an airbender and seeking his father's approval for trying to keep the world safe. Kya, after secretly listening to Bumi, assures him that Aang would most definitely be proud of him and comforts him with a hug, for which Bumi is thankful.
Back in the Southern Water Tribe, Korra tells Mako, Asami, and Varrick what she found out from the judge about Unalaq. She explains to them how Unalaq hired the barbarians to attack the Northern Water Tribe and told them to hide in the spirit forest, knowing that his brother would attack them. This got Tonraq banished, so that Unalaq could become chief himself. Korra asks Mako, Asami, and Varrick to help her bust her father out of jail, to which they willingly agree. Bolin and Pabu appear at the door, wearing formal Water Tribe robes, and Bolin angrily announces that he is getting married to Eska. Korra points out that the boy is supposed to give the girl the betrothal necklace, and Varrick assures Bolin that he will help him out of his relationship.
Asami, Mako, and Korra infiltrate the prison, stunning a guard with an electrified glove and approaching Tonraq's cell, only to realize that he is not in there. Unalaq appears, telling Korra that she will never see her father again, since he is on a ship headed to the Northern Water Tribe to serve his sentence. Korra threatens to take out Unalaq and his army if he does not bring her father back, but he reminds her that she is the Avatar and, therefore, cannot threaten war because she must remain neutral in order for the tribes to be unified.
Korra accuses Unalaq of never wanting unity, only power, and theorizes that he has always been jealous of Tonraq, pointing out that he must have been greatly upset to find out that his brother had fathered the Avatar. Unalaq still insists that he only wants to help Korra realize her destiny, but she does not buy it and tells him she does not want his help anymore. Unalaq goes on to tell Korra that the dark spirits will destroy the South if there is a civil war, but Korra continues to demand that Unalaq bring her father back and leave with his troops, thinking she has the advantage, since she is the only one that can open the Northern spirit portal.
Unalaq taunts Korra by informing her that he does not, in fact, need her and that she has already served her purpose. Korra, enraged by this comment, sends several balls of fire whirling toward Unalaq, which he tactfully blocks with water that he bends from a water skin at his side. Unalaq retaliates, while Mako joins in with a fireblade, only to be blasted in the face by Unalaq. Korra dodges Unalaq's attacks and bends a blast of air down the corridor, sending Unalaq flying against the back wall. Team Avatar takes this opportunity to escape to Varrick's yacht.
On the street, Bolin and "Ping-Ping" are walking down the street when a Northern Water Tribe soldier asks Bolin if he has a license for the animal. Varrick and Zhu Li, who are still inside of Ping-Ping drop money out of the backside of the Platypus bear, causing an uproar in the crowd, which causes a distraction for them and Bolin to slip onto Varrick's yacht. Korra, Mako, and Asami arrive on the yacht and plan to catch up to the ship that harbors Tonraq, realizing that the Northern Water Tribe ships are in the way.
Korra mentions that she could waterbend the ships out of the way if she had a plane. Varrick responds by opening a hatch on his yacht, revealing a biplane, but there is no runway. However, Korra develops the idea of having Asami pilot the plane, while she and Mako supply sufficient thrust using firebending. The plan is a success and Korra clears a path for Varrick's yacht by going into the Avatar State and waterbending a huge wave that pushes the ships that form the blockade out of the way.
Varrick drives his yacht through, while still in the platypus bear, with no problem and the three in the plane continue on to Tonraq's ship. They crash the plane into the water after jumping out and Korra waterbends them onto the ship, taking out the Northern soldiers while they are distracted by the plane crash, also using waterbending. Korra freezes one of the guards in ice and demands he tell her where the prisoners are. Korra finds and rescues Tonraq and the other prisoners, but her father questions her actions along the way. Everyone escapes onto Varrick's yacht and they get away.
Back at the air temple, Tenzin and Ikki return, much to Pema 's relief, and Meelo and Jinora apologize at the prompting of their mother. The siblings make up and run off to play airball. Tenzin also apologizes to his siblings, admitting he had overlooked Aang's flaws. Kya and Bumi apologize in return, as Kya pulls out a picture of their family that she received from Katara. They all agree that, despite the imperfections in their family, they are indeed a happy family.
Meanwhile, Korra explains to her father everything that Unalaq did. Tonraq comes to the decision that he has to put his brother in his place. The other prisoners pledge their support, along with Korra, but Tonraq tells her that she can help by getting the United Forces on their side. She agrees and states that she will get all of the help that her father needs. Her father and the other prisoners depart from the yacht and return to coast, while Korra leaves with Mako, Bolin, Asami, Varrick and Zhu Li on the yacht.
Bolin thanks Korra for making the break-up between him and Eska official, but Varrick announces that they have company. After seeing through the telescope, a horrified Bolin informs everyone that it is his "darling Eska" speeding toward the yacht in a heartbroken rage of waterbending. He then asks Varrick if the yacht is fast enough to outrun his "crazy, waterbending, ex-girlfriend", prompting Varrick to increase the speed of his yacht, saying "Why do you think I built this boat?" and they easily outrun Eska.
5. Peacekeepers
In Republic City, tensions between Southern and Northern Water Tribe people rise as a Southern Water Tribe cultural center is bombed. Mako, back in the police force, tries to track down the culprits while Varrick produces anti-Northern propaganda "movers" ( motion pictures ) starring Bolin. Korra fails to persuade President Raiko to send troops in support of the Southern rebellion. A conflicted Mako reveals Korra's plan to suborn General Iroh to commit the United Forces to the war to Raiko. Korra sets off on a sea voyage to the Fire Nation to seek the Fire Lord's support, but is pursued by Eska and Desna, and eventually swallowed by a gargantuan dark spirit.
6. The Sting
Mako and Asami investigate the theft of a shipment of Future Industries mecha-tanks bound for the Southern rebels, and enlist the Triple Threat Triads for a sting operation. They are double-crossed and find Asami's warehouses looted. In desperation, Asami sells a controlling share of Future Industries to Varrick before Mako identifies him as the instigator of the various bombings and thefts, though he lacks the evidence to convince his superiors. An amnesiac Korra washes ashore on a Fire Nation island.
7. Beginnings (1)
After falling unconscious on the beach of Bhanti Island, members of the Bhanti carry Korra to the temple where they reside. There, the shaman uses firebending to read Korra's energy and concludes that she is infected with a dark spirit who would consume the Avatar Spirit if it was not cleansed in time. The shaman orders the sages to lower Korra into subterranean spirit waters, where she reconnects with her spirits, as well as four of her past lives: Aang, Roku, Kyoshi, and Kuruk. The past Avatars attempt to remind her of who she is, but she is unable to remember, prompting a young man to appear behind her in an orb of gold light.
She asks him if he was the spirit Raava, whom she was told to find; the man said that he is not, but assures Korra that he can aid her in finding Raava, before introducing himself as Wan and recalling how he became the first Avatar.
Wan shows Korra his life, starting with his stealing food from the Chou brothers to feed himself and his friends. He successfully evades his pursuers for a while, but the brothers eventually catch up to him and subsequently throw him into a muddy pen with hybrid pigs. Wan returns to his tree house, bringing Yao and Jaya what little food he had managed to salvage in his tunic. He laments over their impoverished lifestyle, wishing they could live like the Chous. Jaya cautions him against stealing from the Chous again, fearing he would wind up dead, or rather banished into the Spirit Wilds. Despite Jaya's attempt to convince Wan that some people simply have power and others do not, Wan seems only inspired to develop a plan to obtain power.
In the city, a group of hunters prepared to journey into the Spirit Wilds in order to collect food, knowing that the local lion turtle would grant them the element of fire to protect themselves against wild spirits. Wan immediately volunteers; however, after receiving the ability to control fire, he feigns fear and is told to return the power of fire to the lion turtle before returning to the city. Wan returns to the city without returning his fire and shows his newly acquired ability to Yao and Jaya back at the tree house. They tell him that it is forbidden to bring the power of the elements into the city, but he remains adamant and says that they can use the power to change things.
That night, Wan leads Jaya and several other citizens in a raid on the Chou palace. To allow the others sufficient time to escape, Wan battles the Chou brothers and the palace guards and is unmasked during the altercation by one of the Chous. Hesitating to kill the smallest of the Chou brothers, Wan is apprehended and brought before the lion turtle. Refusing to reveal the names of those involved in the raid, Chou the Elder banishes Wan to the Spirit Wilds and Little Chou orders him to give the fire back to the lion turtle. However, Wan pleads with the lion turtle and convinces the giant to allow him to keep his fire power in order to survive in the wilds.
As he wanders the Spirit Wilds, Wan encounters several hostile spirits, such as accidentally stepping on a talking frog that grows giant, forcing him to remain awake until he eventually collapses from exhaustion. However, vines sprout up from the ground beneath him and starts to pull him in. Before being engulfed completely, Wan uses his bending to propel himself back to the surface. Although exhausted, he decides to venture onward until he comes across a tree carrying strange fruit. He plucks one of the fruits and attempts to eat it, but is surprised to find the fruit is actually a swarm of wasps that promptly attack him. In his attempt to flee the swarm, Wan inadvertently falls off a cliff.
As he lands, he finds himself looking at an oasis with trees bearing actual fruit. Still hungry, Wan approaches the island, but before he could reach it, an aye-aye spirit appears and tells him that, being a human, he is not welcome at the oasis. Wan tries to reason with the spirit, telling the entity that he was hungry and in need of sleep. The spirit refused to listen, prompting Wan to use his fire to force the spirit aside. The spirit easily evaded the attack by teleporting behind him and proceeded to shove him to a nearby bush.
Shorty after, a procession of spirits approached the oasis. In a final attempt to enter the oasis, Wan disguises himself as a bush spirit but is stopped by the aye-aye spirit, who recognizes his distinct human scent. The spirit guardian orders Wan to return home once more, and he reveals that he was banished, causing one of the spirits to suggest moving to another lion turtle city. Wan expresses disbelief at the thought of other lion turtles and inquires as to where he would find one. The aye-aye spirit mocks him, revealing there are dozens of lion turtles, refuses to help him and Wan stalks off in frustration.
While traveling through the wilds, he spotted a cat deer caught in a net. He initially decides to eat the creature but ultimately pities it and chooses to help set it free. Before he could release the animal from its restraints, the group of hunters Wan was initially supposed to accompany show up. To protect the cat deer, Wan fights the hunters and leads them away from the creature, using the forest's own hazards to his advantage. Though he manages to stop two of his pursuers, Wan is eventually chased down.
Before he could be apprehended, however, the aye-aye spirit appears and possesses one of the hunters, prompting the other to flee in fear. He exits the body, leaving the human part aye-aye and deformed. The oasis guardian subsequently carries Wan to the oasis and allows the spirit waters to heal his injures and feed him. Deciding he has had enough of humanity and their ways, Wan resolves to stay in the wilds to learn the ways of the spirits. The guardian explains that spirits are able to take over bodies for a short time and any longer can kill someone.
Back at the lion turtle city, a huntsmen explains to the people that that the spirits attacked his men and that they were protecting Wan, like he was one of them. Jaya and Tao are happy to hear that Wan is still alive, and the former tells the people that since Wan has proved that people can live in the wild with the power of fire, they no longer need Chou's rules and asks them to leave with him and start over, eliciting a joyful response.
As time passed, Wan befriends the spirits and learns the Dancing Dragon form from a white dragon, mastering the art to the point where fire became an extension of his own body. In doing so, he improved his firebending skills and managed to drive off any hunters that trespassed in spirit grounds. Eventually growing restless, Wan decides to leave the oasis with the company of his cat deer Mula, in order to travel the world and find the other lion turtle cities.
After wandering across many different terrains, Wan and Mula run across a large group of spirits running away from the all-powerful spirits, Raava and Vaatu, who are battling in a nearby valley, threatening to destroy it. Wan goes to investigate and attempts to stop the fighting in order to protect the spirits and animals in the surrounding forest. Vaatu manipulates Wan, telling if to help him as the other spirit has tormented him for ten thousand years, and tricks him into using his fire to separate Vaatu from his counterpart, Raava.
After Vaatu left the scene, Raava informs Wan of his mistake, telling him that he is the spirit of darkness and chaos and she, as the spirit of light and peace, had kept him under control for the past ten thousand years. Wan also discovers that the human and spirit realms are now headed toward annihilation because of his interference. Back in the present, Korra says that she has finally found Raava.
8. Beginnings (2)
Korra, still submerged in the subterranean pool of spirit water, becomes the topic of discussion as a Bhanti man questions if she should be pulled up, to which the shaman responds that she is connecting with her deepest Avatar memories and that she must confront her own past if she is to move forward. Korra returns her attention to Wan 's story, where he is debating with Raava about human interference in spiritual matters. Although Wan offers his help to the light spirit in finding Vaatu before it is too late to prevent the annihilation of both humans and spirits, an already furious Raava rejects the offer and flies off after she warns the firebender not to interfere with her again, which leaves a dejected Wan to move on with Mula.
Later, Wan discovers some people with the ability to airbend and is thrilled to see other humans for the first time in two years. Frightened, the airbenders flee and Wan tries to follow them until he approaches a cliff which he cannot traverse. He notices one airbender running toward him, but is surprised when he sees the man floating toward a lion turtle that is levitating in the air. After Wan witnesses the creature taking away the element from the people upon their return from the forest, Wan makes his way onto the lion turtle by catapulting himself toward it from a small tree.
As he walks into a village, he eagerly introduces himself to the confused people. Before Wan can tell them his story, however, Vaatu arrives and gains control of the spirits in the village, which begin terrorizing the inhabitants. He reveals his own presence, to which the villagers question on Raava's absence. Wan tries to fend off the spirits with firebending before the light spirit arrives, knocking Vaatu down and driving away the dark spirits. She and Vaatu acknowledge each other and, after gloating how he would destroy her at Harmonic Convergence, flees with the dark spirits.
Confused, the people ask Raava why the spirits attacked to which she replies that Wan should tell them. Pushed by the spirit, he explains himself, wishing he can undo his mistake. Raava warns the firebender that every time Vaatu gains power, her strength wanes, threatening to cover the world in darkness. Wan resolves to beat Vaatu by asking the lion turtle to grant him the power of air. Though the creature is initially hesitant, as no human has ever been able to bend more than one element at the same time, he finally relents after seeing Wan's determination to revert the damage he has done.
However, Raava will have to hold the power until he masters it, leading to the light spirit questioning why she should aid the very human who caused this mess in the first place. When Wan reasons that neither of them can defeat Vaatu alone, as only together they have a chance, Raava reluctantly agrees to help.
As they set off to master airbending, Raava explains that Harmonic Convergence is an event in which she and Vaatu battle for the fate of the world. With only a year to prepare, they combine their energies via Raava passing through Wan's body, granting him airbending after more firebending training. As Wan practices with the element, he asks Raava why she and Vaatu have not destroyed one another after ten thousand years. The light spirit explains that light and darkness cannot exist without each other; even if she was to defeat Vaatu in this encounter, darkness would grow inside her until her counterpart emerges and vice versa.
Since Wan believes that it is not disastrous if Vaatu wins due to Raava eventually being reborn, the light spirit points out that Vaatu intends to destroy the entire world, plunging it into darkness for ten thousand years until her rebirth. Realizing what is at stake, Wan decides to seek out more lion turtles in order to receive more elements. After being granted waterbending and earthbending, Wan asks Raava why humans and spirits are in conflict, to which she responds that ever since spirits entered the mortal realm, humans have been forced to live separately under the protection of the lion turtles, building settlements on their backs. She further says that most humans think only of themselves, regardless of how many others are around.
Near the end of the year, after training with air and earth, Wan and Raava find a ravaged section of a forest and he recognizes his friend Jaya among the people present. Jaya reveals that Wan's survival in the Spirit Wilds inspired them to leave the lion turtle they lived on and try their luck. Wan asks whether Yao came with them as well, which Jaya confirmed, though he finished by saying that Yao and many others from their group had died. Jaya inquires as to why Wan defended Raava after one of the men there launched a flame toward her.
Wan proceeds to introduce her, assuring them that she is not like the dark spirits they encountered. However, Jaya rhetorically asks what the difference between spirits is as they fight any they see. Raava admonishes them for the rash behavior, stating that it would only exacerbate the situation. Suddenly, a crowd of spirits, some of whom Wan recognizes from the oasis, including the aye-aye spirit, arrive to drive out the humans for burning down their forest. Wan attempts to mediate the conflict, but Vaatu appears, corrupting the spirits and feeding off their anger.
The humans, led by Jaya, provoke the dark spirits with firebending, but Wan keeps both groups from clashing with airbending. He and Raava subsequently combine their energies to stop the battle, allowing the young man to bend all four elements. The fighting briefly stops and the spirits turn to normal while the humans are surprised by the extraordinary feat. The strain of Raava possessing him is too much, causing him to pass out. Raava carries an unconscious Wan away as the battle reignites. When Wan comes to, Vaatu appears, having grown larger and revealing that all the humans have been annihilated. The dark spirit promptly departs, promising that the end will come soon.
Raava, in a severely weakened state, asks Wan to travel to the Southern portal for the convergence. Raava tells Wan that she was wrong about humans, not knowing they had such nobility and courage as Wan prompts her not to give up. In the final battle, Wan attempts to fight Vaatu with his bending powers. Despite his efforts, he is extremely outmatched by the dark spirit. Wan is severely beaten despite his bending abilities and fusing with Raava. They fight once again, with his efforts more successful. Though her presence puts a great strain on his body with the possibility of death, Wan refuses to give up.
As the convergence begins, Wan, in a desperate gamble, touches the Southern portal, absorbing the spiritual energy, and permanently fusing his energy and essence with Raava, thus creating the Avatar Spirit. After beating Vaatu back and imprisoning him inside the Tree of Time with the use of all four elements, Wan makes it his mission to bring peace to the world while acting as the bridge between spirits and humans to avoid another disaster. To do so, he has all of the spirits leave the physical world and return to the Spirit World, at which point he closes the spirit portal to ensure that no human would be able to physically enter the Spirit World and release the dark spirit.
The lion turtles declare that the world had entered a new age and decide to renounce their position as protectors of humanity and will no longer grant humans bending. Wars between cultures of respective bending elements ignite and Wan attempts to mediate them. Many years later, an elderly, dying Wan sits against a large earth coin, amidst a war-torn battlefield. He apologizes to Raava for failing to bring peace and balance to the world and laments that despite all his best efforts, chaos and destruction still exist in the world, even with Vaatu locked away.
Raava comforts him and tells him that she will always be with him for all his lifetimes and that they would never give up. As Wan exhales his last breath, a golden light exits his body and disintegrates in little sparks. As the scene fades to white, his newborn reincarnation is heard crying and Korra's vision ends.
Korra opens her eyes while in the Avatar State and shoots up, gasping for air as the glow subsides. The elderly shaman asks her who she is. Korra replies, saying her name is Korra and that she is the Avatar. The shaman takes Korra outside to a herd of flying bison that were saved since the Hundred Year War, musing over the fact that she never thought she would be able to offer one to the Avatar. When Korra wonders how long she has been out, the shaman cannot answer her, though urges her to take action as the Harmonic Convergence will be upon them in just a few weeks. Determined, Korra states that she has to close the spirit portal before the celestial event occurs. Taking one of the sky bison, she leaves the island.
9. The Guide
Korra seeks Tenzin's help to enter the spirit world; but much to Tenzin's frustration, their attempts fail; Korra is instead guided by Jinora, who proves to have a strong connection to the spirits. In Republic City, Mako continues his investigation of Varrick. When Asami goes to cheer Mako up, his apartment is raided by the police and they find evidence, planted by Varrick, that he was responsible for the thefts from Future Industries, resulting in his second arrest. At the South Pole, Unalaq fails to open the sealed North Pole portal himself, and reports to Vaatu, who promises that Korra shall come to them.
10. A New Spiritual Age
In the spirit world with Jinora, Korra must contend with the difficult relationships between spirits. When the two are separated, Korra is transformed into a childlike version of herself. She is rescued by Iroh, who has "retired" into the spirit world and who teaches her that she must exert strong control over her emotions in the spirit world, among other lessons, allowing Korra to travel to the Tree of Time, where the portals meet in the spirit world. Meanwhile, Jinora finds Wan Shi Tong's library and convinces the Spirit of Knowledge to allow her to learn about the spirit portals.
While learning that Vaatu's seal can indeed be broken if both portals are opened during Harmonic Convergence, Jinora learns that Wan Shi Tong is in league with Unalaq. Attempting to rescue Jinora, Korra is forced by Unalaq to open the northern portal. After a short battle, Korra is rescued by a friendly spirit and forced out of the spirit world without Jinora, whose inanimate physical body remains in a coma-like state.
11. Night of a Thousand Stars
Bolin visits Mako in prison, and Mako tries to warn his brother against Varrick. Disbelieving him, Bolin goes to the finale of his "movers" series, which President Raiko is also attending. During the performance, Bolin foils an apparent attempt to kidnap President Raiko. When he interrogates one of the kidnappers, the man incriminates Varrick, who is promptly arrested, with Mako freed. Korra warns President Raiko about Harmonic Convergence and Unalaq's plans, but President Raiko retains his army to defend Republic City. Korra turns to Varrick, who agrees to give her his personal battleship. At the South Pole, Tonraq is defeated in a grueling duel by Unalaq.
12. Harmonic Convergence
Senna tells Korra and her friends that the Southern resistance has been defeated and Tonraq captured. Meanwhile, Jinora nears death. With Harmonic Convergence hours away, Korra and her friends stage a frontal attack on the fortified South Pole, wherein everybody except Bumi is captured. Bumi infiltrates the camp and through a series of absurdities which mirror the supposed "tall tales" which he often tells, annihilates all opposition, freeing Korra and her friends. Korra and numerous of her allies follow Unalaq into the portal, while Asami takes an injured Tonraq to Katara for healing.
While Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi seek Jinora, Korra goes to close the portals while Mako and Bolin hold off Unalaq, who reveals that he plans to unite with Vaatu to become a Dark Avatar and rule the world. Korra is too late to close the portal and Harmonic Convergence begins; Vaatu is freed for the first time in 10,000 years.
13. Darkness Falls
Korra tries to imprison Vaatu while Mako and Bolin attempt to keep Unalaq out of the spirit world. Aided by Desna and Eska, Unalaq overpowers Mako and Bolin, ambushes Korra, and merges with Vaatu, becoming the Dark Avatar. Korra and Unalaq then battle each other in their respective Avatar States. In the Spirit World, Tenzin and his siblings meet Iroh, who indicates how to find Jinora. The siblings then venture into the Fog of Lost Souls, which drives humans mad with their self-doubts. Kya and Bumi succumb to the fog and Tenzin nearly does as well, but is visited by a vision of Aang, by whose advice Tenzin clears the fog and frees his relatives, accepted his destiny as separate from that of his father for the first time in his life.
Mako and Bolin convince Eska and Desna to free them, but cannot render aid to Korra in time; Vaatu tears Raava out of Korra and Unalaq severs her connection with her past lives. Jinora senses the destruction of Raava and goes to help. Unalaq transforms into "Unavaatu", a powerful dark spirit, and departs into the physical world to destroy it and remake it in a fashion of his own choosing.
14. Light in the Dark
Tenzin and his siblings find Korra and her friends wounded and unconscious. Unavaatu attacks Republic City. During the attack, Varrick escapes prison. In the Spirit World, Kya heals Korra, whom Tenzin leads to the Tree of Time, telling her to meditate within it. While meditating, Korra unlocks previously untapped spiritual potential and teleports to Republic City to discover a fragment of Raava within Vaatu; both spirits cannot exist without each other and one will always regrow from within the other. Jinora's spirit illuminates the fragment, and Korra withdraws Raava and purifies Unavaatu, killing Unalaq and defeating Vaatu.
Tenzin, Kya, Bumi, Mako, Bolin, Desna and Eska defend Korra's body from attacking dark spirits. Korra and Raava return and use the Convergence to re-merge; the Avatar Spirit is reformed, but Korra's link with the previous Avatars appears to remain lost. After some contemplation, Korra decides to leave the spirit portals open, believing that spirits and humans can find a way to coexist and should be allowed the chance. She also declares the Southern Water Tribe to now be independent from the North as its own state. Korra and Mako break up, but pledge to remain friends.
Season 3
1. A Breath of Fresh Air
Two weeks after Harmonic Convergence, portions of Republic City have become covered in spirit vines and after Korra cannot remove them, President Raiko expels her from the city. Around the world, people begin to spontaneously develop the ability to airbend, including Bumi. Tenzin, Korra, and her friends embark on an airship trip to attempt to recruit these people into a new Air Nomad nation. Meanwhile, the dangerous criminal Zaheer ( Henry Rollins ) escapes from a remote prison thanks to his own new airbending skills.
2. Rebirth
Traveling across the Earth Kingdom with Team Avatar and Jinora, Tenzin finds that most of the new airbenders are not willing to uproot their lives to join the new Air Nation, although they find a first recruit in Kai, a sly young thief trying to escape Earth Kingdom authorities. Meanwhile, Zaheer liberates the earthbender Ghazan (Peter Giles) and the armless waterbender Ming-Hua ( Grey DeLisle ) from their respective prisons and is apparently intent on abducting or killing the Avatar. An elderly Zuko ( Bruce Davison ) travels to the North Pole, where the last member of Zaheer's band is being kept.
3. The Earth Queen
Team Avatar arrive in Ba Sing Se as part of their search for new airbenders, and receive an ambivalent welcome from Queen Hou-Ting, who is of the belief that Avatar Aang manipulated her father in his time on the throne. Korra reluctantly agrees to a tax collection effort on the Queen's behalf in order to gain her cooperation, fighting off bandits with Asami during the mission. The queen nevertheless continues to claim that there are no airbenders in the city. Meanwhile, Kai absconds from the group to pickpocket, and while looking for him, Mako and Bolin meet the family of their late father.
They learn that the city's secret police, the Dai Li (who are now more firmly under the control of the throne, but are still sinister in nature) are capturing new airbenders, and indeed Kai is arrested and forced to serve in the army. At the North Pole, Zuko, the new northern water tribe chiefs Desna and Eska, and Korra's father Tonraq visit Zaheer's last imprisoned comrade, his girlfriend P'Li, a dangerous firebender.
4. In Harm's Way
At the North Pole, Zaheer and his team free P'Li from her icy prison, and she is revealed to be a powerful combustion-bender. In Ba Sing Se, Lin Beifong arrives to warn Korra about the threat to her life. With Lin's aid, Team Avatar liberate the press-ganged airbenders. After escaping the Dai Li and the Earth Queen's wrath, Tenzin takes the airbenders to the Northern Air Temple on their consent, while Lin, Korra, and her friends search for more airbenders.
5. The Metal Clan
Team Avatar arrive in Zaofu, a metal city led by Suyin Beifong ( Anne Heche ), Lin's estranged half-sister and the mother of Opal ( Alyson Stoner ), a new airbender. Korra begins training Opal, but cannot convince Lin to mend the rift between herself and Suyin. In Republic City, Zaheer infiltrates Air Temple Island in an attempt to find Korra but escapes after he is identified and attacked by Kya.
6. Old Wounds
While Korra learns metalbending from Suyin, Lin confronts memories of her youth: as a young police officer, she was scarred by Suyin while apprehending her at a crime scene, and their mother Toph covered up the incident before sending Suyin away and resigning as police chief. After a violent confrontation, the sisters reconcile with one another. Meanwhile, Zaheer and his crew escape Republic City after a car chase with police and Zaheer, who proves capable of entering the spirit world, ascertains the Avatar's whereabouts.
7. Original Airbenders
At the Northern Air Temple, Tenzin finds it difficult to teach the new airbenders about Air Nomad culture. At Bumi's suggestion, he imposes a strict training regime, causing more stress and exhaustion. Jinora and Kai discover a herd of young sky bison and are abducted by poachers. With Jinora calling on the aid of spirits, they call to the other airbenders for help, and the criminals are easily overwhelmed. Tenzin promises to consider granting Jinora her airbending master tattoos.
8. The Terror Within
In Zaofu, Korra and Bolin continue to learn metalbending, and Opal leaves for the Northern Air Temple. At night, Zaheer and his team infiltrate Zaofu and capture Korra, but Team Avatar, backed up by Lin, Suyin and a contingent of metalbenders, are able to rescue the avatar, and the assailants retreat. In the subsequent investigation, Korra and her friends discover that Suyin's adviser Aiwei has been aiding Zaheer, but he escapes through a secret tunnel. Later, with the help of Suyin, Team Avatar sneaks out of Zaofu to pursue the attackers.
9. The Stakeout
Team Avatar follows Aiwei to the Misty Palms Oasis, and Korra enters the Spirit World to find Aiwei and Zaheer meeting there. Zaheer throws Aiwei into the Fog of Lost Souls and explains the goals of his secret society, the Red Lotus, to Korra: a malevolent offshoot of the Order of the White Lotus, they want to overthrow governments, in service of the ideological belief that chaos is the natural state of the world. While Zaheer stalls for time, his allies close in on Korra's inanimate body. Bolin and Mako are overpowered, while Asami, fleeing on Naga with Korra's body, is captured by the Earth Queen's forces. The Red Lotus follows in pursuit.
10. Long Live the Queen
En route by airship to Ba Sing Se, Korra and Asami escape from their cell but crash-land the airship in the desert. Working with the airship's crew, they escape a massive desert animal and arrive back at the oasis. In Ba Sing Se, the Red Lotus propose to exchange Mako and Bolin for Korra to the Earth Queen. After hearing of Korra's escape, they attack and defeat the Dai Li, and Zaheer uses his airbending to asphyxiate the Earth Queen to death. The Red Lotus destroys part of the city's inner walls, announcing that the city belongs to the people, and chaos breaks out. Zaheer frees Mako and Bolin and gives them a message for Korra. At the oasis, Asami and Korra meet Tonraq, Zuko, and Lin and hear about the revolution.
11. The Ultimatum
As the inner city of Ba Sing Se is looted and razed, and riots and fires spread throughout the outer city, Mako and Bolin escape with their family to the Misty Palms Oasis. They tell Korra that Zaheer intends to kill the airbenders at the Northern Air Temple unless she surrenders to him. After speaking to Iroh in the spirit world, Korra uses the Metal Clan's radio to contact Tenzin just as the Red Lotus attacks the Temple. Tenzin resists the invaders with his siblings while the other airbenders attempt to escape. After the defenders are overpowered, the Red Lotus throws Kya and Bumi off the mountain and subdue the exhausted and badly beaten Tenzin.
12. Enter the Void
Korra agrees to give herself up to the Red Lotus to save the airbenders, but as she does so, her friends discover that Zaheer has already removed the hostages from the temple. Ghazan traps Tenzin, Asami, Mako, and Bolin with lava and flees with Ming-Hua, but Korra's friends escape successfully thanks to Bolin's new-found lavabending skills, though the Northern Air Temple is critically damaged in the process. Meanwhile, Lin, Suyin, and her metalbenders fight P'Li. Suyin breaks the deadlock by killing P'Li with the contained force of her own combustion-bending. Zaheer fights Korra and Tonraq, who is thrown off a cliff but saved by the metalbender captain Kuvira ( Zelda Williams ). Zaheer escapes with the unconscious Korra using his own newfound ability to fly.
13. Venom of the Red Lotus
The Red Lotus tortures a chained Korra by poisoning her with mercury, in order to force her to the point of death, triggering the Avatar State before they kill her, which would end the cycle of the Avatar's rebirth. However, a wrathful Korra overpowers her captors and fights Zaheer in the skies. Meanwhile, her friends find and rescue the airbenders. After Mako electrocutes Ming-Hua, he and Bolin narrowly escape Ghazan's collapsing the Red Lotus's lair on top of himself. As Korra is about to succumb to the poison, Jinora leads the airbenders to pull Zaheer out of the sky with a massive air vortex formed from their combined bending.
Zaheer is captured, and Suyin metalbends the poison out of Korra. Two weeks later, in Republic City, a weakened Korra, using a wheelchair, watches as Tenzin anoints Jinora as an airbending master and rededicates the Air Nomads to a nomadic life of service to the world, following Korra's example.
Season 4
1. After All These Years
Three years after the defeat of Zaheer, the vain Prince Wu is about to be crowned Earth King, and Mako is assigned as his bodyguard. In the Earth Kingdom, Opal and Kai try to protect a community from bandits with limited success. Kuvira, who now styles herself the "Great Uniter", appears at the head of an army that includes Bolin, Varrick and his assistant Zhu Li. She offers the governor supplies and protection – if he submits his state to her sovereignty. The governor reluctantly agrees, and their conversation reveals that this has become a pattern as Kuvira consolidates more and more of the Earth Kingdom under her authority, which begins to appear increasingly despotic. Elsewhere, a despondent Korra is fighting and losing cage matches, having apparently renounced her identity as the Avatar.
2. Korra Alone
Over the past three years, a despondent Korra has been slowly recovering her health with the aid of physical therapy and healing administered by Katara at the South Pole, following her torture and poisoning at the hands of the Red Lotus. However, the effects of the assault and the other suffering and losses that she has faced has left her psychologically traumatized, and haunted by doubts that she will ever be the same again, and she has not been into the Avatar State since the assault. Tricking her family and friends into believing she has returned to Republic City, she is in fact wandering aimlessly throughout the world, isolating herself as much as possible from human contact.
She is haunted by a dark vision of herself as she appeared in the fight with Zaheer, which appears to watch her wherever she goes. A spirit leads her into the banyan swamps which previously featured in Avatar: The Last Airbender, where her doppelganger apparition chases her down and attacks her, and she suffers a hallucination of drowning, but regains consciousness in the abode of Toph Beifong.
3. The Coronation
At Wu's coronation in Republic City, Kuvira refuses to yield power to him, instead announcing that she will consolidate the territories under her control into a new Earth Empire. This creates a rift between her and the other world leaders including Suyin, as well as between Bolin and Mako, who has to protect the unpopular Wu from angry supporters of Kuvira. Meanwhile, in the banyan swamp, Toph agrees to help Korra regain her strength, though her methodology largely consists of browbeating Korra and beating her up with still formidable earthbending. She finds residual metal poison inside Korra but can't remove it – Korra subconsciously resists, scarred by her previous traumas. Meanwhile, Tenzin sends Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo to search for Korra, and Varrick experiments on spirit vines for Kuvira.
4. The Calling
While the young airbenders look far and wide for Korra, Ikki is briefly captured by two Earth Empire soldiers. Based on what they say, Ikki leads the trio to the Foggy Swamp. There, Korra is still haunted by visions of being hurt by her past enemies, but manages to connect to the siblings through the great banyan-grove tree's roots. After they beg her to resume her Avatar duties to face Kuvira, Toph's advice helps Korra to let go of her fears, bend the rest of the poison out of herself and re-enter the Avatar State.
5. Enemy at the Gates
As Kuvira's army marches on Zaofu, Suyin refuses to let her city join the new empire, and Korra tries in vain to negotiate a peaceful outcome. Varrick and Bolin come to realize the totalitarian nature of Kuvira's rule, but their escape is foiled by Kuvira's fiancé, Suyin's son Baatar Jr. ( Todd Haberkorn ). While Zhu Li pledges her allegiance to Kuvira, Varrick is forced to weaponize the spirit vines for her, and Bolin is to be sent to a " reeducation " camp. In Republic City, Asami reconnects with her imprisoned father, Hiroshi.
6. The Battle of Zaofu
After Suyin and her twin sons are captured while infiltrating Kuvira's camp to take her out, Kuvira agrees to a duel with Korra to decide control of Zaofu. Although now free of the effects of the Red Lotus poison, Korra remains off-balance and Kuvira goads her to gain further advantage, consistently outmaneuvering Korra. Unable to otherwise gain the advantage, Korra enters the Avatar State and prepares to deliver a devastating blow, until she hallucinates a vision of her dark spectre in Kuvira's place and collapses to the ground. Opal, Jinora, Ikki and Meelo save Korra and flee with her on the back of an air bison. Meanwhile, Varrick and Bolin escape after Varrick improvises a spirit vine bomb. Kuvira forces Zaofu's citizens to submit, and has Baatar Jr. and Zhu Li continue work on the vine superweapon.
7. Reunion
As Korra reunites with her friends in Republic City, Wu is abducted on Kuvira's orders. Korra, Asami, and Mako rescue him from a train and hide him with Mako's family in Asami's mansion. Meanwhile, Bolin and Varrick encounter escapees from Kuvira's prison camps, which now house anyone not of Earth Kingdom blood, and help them escape from the now walled-in Empire. In the swamp, Kuvira's forces begins harvesting the spirit tree's vines.
8. Remembrances
At the Sato estate, recalling his kidnapping, Mako attempts to teach Wu how to protect himself from his enemies. The prince, however, is knocked down after Mako lands a gentle punch on him; Yin enters the room with Tu and runs, worried, to the young royal, scolding Mako for injuring him. When Mako makes a remark about how weak Wu is, the prince justifies himself by saying that he "wasn't raised by a pack of cops in the woods" like Mako. The firebender states that Wu knows nothing about him because he has never asked, but the prince responds by asking him a number of questions, including if there is a special lady in his life. Mako answers that he has not dated anyone since he and Korra broke up; the prince, his interest piqued as she is the Avatar, asks to know everything that happened between them.
Mako begins his story, explaining that he and Bolin grew up poor and that he wanted to become a pro-bender for the fame a riches, until he was introduced to Korra, courtesy of Bolin, at the Pro-bending Arena. He explains to Wu how Korra joined their team, the Fire Ferrets, and how she had inspired him with her bending skills, as a Pro-bender and a loyal friend. Wu asks him if they had kissed, but Mako answers negatively, countering with the story of how he and Asami had met when she hit him with her moped.
They had started dating, but that made Mako's relationship with Korra very complicated because they had kissed, something on which Wu, Tu and Yin all offer opinions: the prince takes Mako's side, but Tu and Yin believe it was wrong because he was dating Asami at the time. Mako continues saying his feelings became clearer when Korra was taken by Tarrlok, leading to his breakup with Asami. Mako says that he and Korra defeated Amon together and after that, he was finally able to declare his feelings for her, starting their relationship.
Yin asks Mako if they were able to live happily ever after, causing Mako to remember the rough stretches their relationship endured, as Korra repeatedly asked him whose side he was on. Finally, an angry Korra confronted Mako at his his workplace; after an furious argument, in which they both decided that their jobs were interfering with their relationship, Korra broke up with Mako, with the former leaving the room in tears.
Their breakup allowed Mako to focus more on his work. A sudden rash of attacks on supply ships heading to the Southern Water Tribe, which was having a negative effect on Asami's company, led him and Asami both to carry out a sting operation with the help of the Triple Threat Triad in an effort to uncover the culprit. He says it was the perfect way to help him get his mind off Korra, recalling that it was an intense night. After discovering that the triads had double-crossed them, they barely escaped; when they returned to Asami's warehouses, they found them completely emptied.
He remembered that Asami was ready to give up, but he assured her that he was not giving up on her, and she kissed him. Mako says he knows what he had done was wrong, but Wu objects: Mako had already broken up with Korra, giving Mako, Wu says, the right to choose what he wanted. Mako counters by continuing his tale; when Korra, suffering from amnesia, returned, she had forgotten their breakup and kissed Mako in front of Asami, angering her. Making things worse, when Korra asked him if their fight was bad, Mako had lied and assured her it was not.
Wu voices his disapproval of Mako's behavior, stating simply that Mako should have told her the truth about their breakup; Yin again points out that Mako is just like his grandfather, but Mako points out that he and Asami were never officially back together. Tu says that it seems Mako is so afraid of disappointing anyone that he ends up disappointing everyone; while his assessment annoys Mako, Tu gets a high-five from Wu, who opins that "truer words have never been spoken." Mako clarifies that he did end up telling Korra eventually, but by the time he did so, she had already regained her memory, and thus knew he had lied.
He had justified himself to her by saying that he did not want to hurt her, and that a part of him might have wanted to forget about the breakup. Korra bluntly reinforced that their relationship would not work, bringing it to an end.
After Harmonic Convergence, Mako remembers, Team Avatar left Republic City in search of airbenders. He recalls that being around Korra and Asami was awkward, but that he realized he needed to figure out who he was without a lady in his life. Wu says that he knows what needing distance from women is like, claiming that he is consistently pursued by them; Mako, after a moment of un-enthused silence, continues his story. He was able, he tells them, to help Korra defeat Zaheer and save the airbenders, and to do so not as her romantic interest, but as her friend.
He says that Korra taught him the importance of putting others before himself, and that she continues to inspire him when he thinks of her. As Mako finishes his anecdote, Wu, getting to his feet, comments that the story was amazing, and that he really learned a few things: he really did not know anything about Mako, and that, while not intending to offend Yin, "ladies are complicated". Wu further says that he intends to focus simply on being a better king; getting into a fighting stance, he tells Mako to attack him again, believing he can withstand it. Mako's first, soft punch causes Wu to collapse straight to the floor, shouting "Wu down!" As Mako stands over the fallen prince, Yin sharply slaps his arm.
At Air Temple Island, Korra watches the sunset with a serious expression on her face. Asami brings her a cup of tea; sensing something is wrong, she asks if she is okay, and Korra repeats to her the sentiment of Toph regarding their current situation: the world does not need the Avatar, and confronting Kuvira is purposeless. Asami tells Korra Toph's assertion is ridiculous, but Korra tells her Toph is right; despite everything she has done, the world is still in imbalance. She explains herself through a flashback of her own, telling Asami her own history.
When she learned she was the Avatar, she remembers, she greatly anticipated her future, believing that she "was really gonna change things", but she had been naïve. When she saw Amon remove Lightning Bolt Zolt's bending, she was utterly terrified, and when he did the same to her, her worst nightmare was realized. Asami interrupts Korra's train of thought for a moment, reminding her that after Korra exposed Amon and stopped the Equalist Movement, the free elections that followed in the United Republic gave nonbenders a voice, and people had found their hope again.
She states that good things came of her struggle; Korra counters by reminding her that, although she had beaten Amon, Unalaq followed soon after, and his threatening Jinora's life led her to betray Tenzin and open the portals, which further threw the Spirit and human worlds into chaos and led to, not only the fusion of Unalaq and Vaatu, but a temporary separation from Raava and a permanent loss of her connection with her past lives. Asami retorts that, by the end of the conflict, she had become more stronger, as UnaVaatu had been, and that by opening the portals, she brought back the Air Nation and caused a positive shift in the world.
Again doubting herself, Korra moves on to Zaheer, who also received airbending; besides nearly killing her with his newfound power, he had thrown the Earth Kingdom into chaos by killing the Earth Queen, and nearly done the same to the rest of the airbenders. In the wake of his defeat, Kuvira gained power, and the world was, again, thrown out of balance. From the beginning of her recollection to the present, she notes with frustration, nothing has changed.
Tenzin, silently joining the two, interrupts them and, to the surprise of both of them, agrees with Korra's assessment of the world. He continues by stating that she should learn from her enemies and conflicts, adding she has changed a lot since he first met her, from a selfish person to a thoughtful young woman who cares about others and puts their needs before her own. He claims that her sacrifices for the new Air Nation serve as a testament for that. Korra thanks them both for their encouragement, and says that, no matter what happens in the future, she will do whatever she must to restore balance to the world.
As Baraz and Ahnah 's boat makes its way across the Mo Ce Sea, Bolin and Varrick, along with the rest of the escapees, listen as Baraz tells a story about eating bark-onion soup. Everybody is very bored by the tale; Bolin asks if anybody else wants to throw themselves overboard. Varrick, jumping to his feet, replies that he does not; while the others have been telling "incredibly boring stories", he tuned them all out, crafting, he claims, the most exciting tale ever told, "soon to become the greatest mover ever made!" He presents Bolin to them as Nuktuk, Hero of the South, to be the lead in Bolin, Hero of the World; he labels it as Bolin's "incredible true story".
Bolin, confused, asks whether he is playing Nuktuk or vice versa, and Varrick responds that both will be true: it is his true story, but they will use the popularity of Nuktuk to boost its profitability. Bolin, suddenly downcast, asks how he could be labelled a "hero of the world", having abandoned his family and friends and joined the ranks of a psychotic dictator, who imprisoned him and he was now running home with his tail between his legs. Varrick, persisting, tells Bolin to stop "emphasizing the wrong story beads".
Varrick launches into his story. In it, Zaheer, a resurrected "Zombie- Amon ", Vaatu, and Unalaq all participate in a conference call, expressing their willingness to join forces to take out their common nemesis, Bolin, deeming him to be "way too powerful and awesome"; although the former three repeatedly try to drop Unalaq from the talk, they soon discover that the Chief of the North has been listening in on their conversation, at which point the three companions hang up on him. Nuktuk eventually defeats the villains by destroying UnaVaatu, whose dissolving form becomes the stars, and trapping Zaheer in a tornado, turning him into wind.
Amon's fate, however, remains unresolved and unaddressed. As Varrick hastily wraps the story, making Bolin turn into a dragon, go into the Spirit World, and save the Avatar, he receives a standing ovation from the fugitives, much to Bolin's displeasure. Varrick grows slightly annoyed when Bolin starts to point out the plot holes in the script, such as the discarded storyline of "Zombie-Amon", but jovially tells his friend to "never let the truth get in the way of a good story."
9. Beyond the Wilds
In Republic City, Fire Lord Izumi and Tenzin refuse to endorse Raiko's proposed offensive against Kuvira even after Bolin and Varrick bring word of her vine weapons research. Reacting to Kuvira's harvesting of the spirit vines in the swamp, vines in Republic City begin to attack random people, Jinora included, trapping them in the Spirit World. Korra's psychological trauma prevents her from meditating to enter the Spirit World. Unable to think of another way to let go of the fear that continues to handicap, Korra decides to confront the real Zaheer in his prison.
Zaheer, disgusted with the rise of a tyrant like Kuvira, who stands as the antithesis to the philosophies of the Red Lotus, proposes to help Korra. He assists her in learning to pass beyond the trauma of her past hardships, and helps her step into the Spirit World, where Korra speaks with Raava for the first time in many years. Using her restored ability to communicate with the spirits, Korra calms the volatile vines and frees Jinora and the other human captives. Meanwhile, Bolin attempts and fails to make up with Opal, but agrees to help her and Lin rescue their family.
10. Operation Beifong
Near Zaofu, Opal, Lin, and Bolin are joined by Toph and track the Beifong prisoners to a facility where Baatar Jr. and Zhu Li are testing a vine energy supercannon. A rescue plan takes form, but tensions run high between the previously estranged Toph and Lin. Zhu Li proves to have been feigning her loyalty to Kuvira and attempts to sabotage the weapon, but her effort is discovered by Kuvira. The rescue team frees the captive Beifongs, who engage Kuvira and her forces together, before being forced to flee by Kuvira's superior numbers. Lin and Toph find a measure of reconciliation. Zhu Li reveals that Kuvira is planning an imminent attack on Republic City; she is determined to retake all of the lands which the Earth Kingdom had once ceded to the United Republic. Meanwhile, Korra tries and fails to convince the spirits to help defend Republic City.
11. Kuvira's Gambit
Wu and Mako help evacuate Republic City, and Asami and Varrick build a fleet of flying mecha-suits to defend it. But Kuvira's forces attack earlier than expected. Her superweapon, now mounted on a giant mecha, devastates the Republic's navy, forcing Raiko to surrender. Korra and the airbenders capture the mecha's creator, Baatar Jr. After Korra threatens to keep him from Kuvira forever, he attempts to convince Kuvira to end the attack, but she has the mecha fire on his position, in an attempt to take out the Avatar and her allies.
12. Day of the Colossus
Barely surviving Kuvira's attack, Korra and her friends look for ways to take down the colossus. They discover that the exterior and joints of the behemoth mecha tank are made entirely of rarefied platinum and thus immune to metal bending. After paint bombs, lavabending, metal cables, collapsed buildings, Korra's bending, and an electromagnetic pulse set up by Varrick all fail to stop the giant mecha for long, Lin frees Hiroshi Sato, who proposes to take the mecha down from the inside. Asami, Hiroshi, and the newly engaged Varrick and Zhu Li attach plasma torches to the two remaining flight suits, then engage the colossus. After Hiroshi sacrifices his life by allowing the mecha to crush his flight suit in order to gain enough time to cut open a hole to the interior of the colossus, Korra's assault team is able to enter it.
13. The Last Stand
In the mech's control room, Korra and Kuvira fight one another. Meanwhile, Team Avatar begin to take the giant apart from the inside. Suyin and Lin disable its arm and weapon, and Bolin and Mako detonate its power source, with Mako risking and nearly losing his life to blow the colossus into several pieces. Korra and Kuvira crash-land in the city's spirit wilds, and Kuvira activates the discarded cannon, triggering a staggering and self-sustaining release of energy powered by the vines surrounding them. Leaping to block the beam of the weapon from annihilating Kuvira, Korra enters the Avatar State and channels the massive outpouring of spirit energy, redirecting it and miraculously creating a third portal into the Spirit World.
Emerging into the spirit world, Kuvira and Korra commiserate over their hardships and the mistakes they have made, and Kuvira concedes defeat and is arrested upon returning to the physical world. Weeks later, at Zhu Li and Varrick's wedding, Wu announces his intent to abdicate in favor of democratic Earth states. Korra and Asami plan a trip together to the spirit world; in the last scene of the series, the two walk hand-in-hand into the new spirit portal.
