Plot summary

1. Rebel Spirit

Six months after the defeat of Amon and the Equalists, Korra believes she has mastered airbending, Mako works as a policeman, Bolin fares poorly in pro-bending with the new "Fire Ferrets", and Asami tries to keep Future Industries intact. Team Avatar joins Tenzin and his family in a visit to the Southern Water Tribe for the winter solstice. The festivities are disrupted by the rampage of a dark spirit, which neither Korra nor Tenzin can calm or repel. Unalaq, Korra's uncle and the chief of the Northern Water Tribe ultimately assuages the spirit's anger with a "spiritual" form of waterbending. Despite the misgivings of her father, who has a strained relationship with his brother, Korra apprentices herself to Unalaq to continue her spiritual development, rebuffing previous mentor Tenzin in the process.

2. The Southern Lights

Korra and company journey with Unalaq and his children Desna and Eska to the South Pole, where Korra is to attempt to return the long-absent Southern Lights, at Unalaq's urging. When Korra learns that her father was once banished from the Northern Water Tribe for causing a spirit rampage, and that he and Tenzin were responsible for her seclusion in her youth, she insists on Tonraq returning home, and tensions begin to grow between herself and Tenzin. At the South Pole, Korra succeeds in returning the southern lights by opening a blocked "spirit portal" one of two gateways which allows access to the spirit world and regulates the flow of spiritual energy between the two worlds.

Returning from the pole, Korra's party discover that Northern Water Tribe have come to occupy the south at Unalaq's direction, to initiate a "reunification" of the two tribes. At the Southern Air Temple, Jinora is strongly drawn to the statues of the past avatars, particular that of her grandfather Aang and an unidentified carving of another ancient Avatar.

3. Civil Wars (1)

In the Southern Water Tribe capital of Wolf Cove, many troops from the Northern Water Tribe march through the streets, telling the citizens of the South to return to their homes. When the Southerners in the street stand there and glare at the soldiers, the Northern waterbenders make short barriers of ice and push the civilians out of the way, while other waterbenders in their battleships form large walls of ice around the harbor.

At this time, Unalaq is explaining to Korra that his soldiers are there to protect the now-open spirit portal at the South Pole. He also informs Korra of another spirit portal at the North Pole that can be opened, allowing both spirits and humans to pass from one pole to another at will. Seeing the potential to reunite the tribes, Korra favors the idea.

Meanwhile, at the Southern Air Temple, Tenzin and Pema are relaxing while Kya is sitting on a rock, feeding lemurs. Bumi shows up in his underwear, ruining his brother's relaxation. Tenzin brings up how this reminds them on when they would vacation with their father as kids. Kya and Bumi rebuff this, stating that they were not there. Tenzin brings up more instances, which are all rebuffed. Tenzin, his elder brother, and sister are suddenly bickering about how Aang had spent much more time with Tenzin rather than with Bumi or Kya.

Tenzin assures them that he could have sworn they joined them on their vacations, but is soon interrupted by Jinora and Meelo, who have been riding around on air scooters. Pema soon realizes that Ikki is nowhere to be found and chastises her eldest daughter and son for teasing Ikki and causing her to run off. Tenzin is determined to find Ikki and reluctantly lets Kya and Bumi accompany him.

In Tonraq and Senna 's home, there is a meeting regarding the recent activities of the Northern soldiers. Varrick and other Southern waterbenders are determined to start a rebellion against the Northern Water Tribe for not letting them live in peace and live their own customs and views, despite Korra's attempt to explain Unalaq's actions. Tonraq tells Korra that she must talk to her uncle to put a stop to the civil war that is stirring between their tribes.

In the streets of Wolf Cove, Bolin is pulling a cart carrying Desna and Eska, while the twins discuss their hatred for the South. As the three and Pabu arrive at their destination, Bolin sarcastically comments to Eska that he will miss her when she is gone, but much to his dismay, Eska reveals her plan to move back to the North with Bolin, where they will live together in "icy bliss". Bolin decides it would be best to break up with her after receiving Mako 's counseling.

Korra confronts Unalaq and tells him that a lot of Southerners feel like their tribe is being invaded and that there could be a civil war. Unalaq explains that a civil war would further disrupt the balance between both tribes, the rest of the world and the spirits. Unalaq assures her that only the Avatar can prevent the war between them all and reunite them as one tribe, but Korra is not so sure.

Meanwhile, in the streets, passing Northern Water Tribe soldiers become agitated when three native children drop snowballs on them, and the soldiers waterbend the children off the roof in retaliation. Adult Southern waterbenders intervene, causing a standoff, until Korra arrives and attempts to alleviate the situation. Seeing this, they accuse Korra of siding with the North and a young waterbender girl throws a snowball and calls her "the worst Avatar ever". Realizing his daughter is having no success, Tonraq arrives and settles the matter by telling the Southern benders to return to their homes. He attempts to talk to Korra, but she storms away on Naga.

Back at the air temple, Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi are searching for Ikki, though in vain. Kya points out that Tenzin is not spending enough time with his children because he is too busy with his other duties, similar to how their own father had been. Tenzin walks away to avoid the subject, as Kya mentions the fact that they did not have a perfect childhood, despite what Tenzin believes.

In the Southern Water Tribe, Korra approaches Mako, explaining her frustrations with her Avatar duties. Mako responds by suggesting that she forget about everything for the time being and that they have a nice dinner. However, the dinner ends up being quite awkward, since Bolin, Desna, and Eska join them. As soon as the twins go to get some food, Bolin confesses that he could not break up with Eska due to her threatening to freeze him in a block of ice and feed him to dolphin piranhas.

Returning to Ikki's search party, Bumi is telling a story from when he was in the United Forces, though Tenzin does not believe his tale. Tenzin doubts that it can help him, while Bumi replies it is supposed to inspire them. The three come across a large waterfall, and Bumi starts climbing down rather than taking the path, insisting that it will be faster. Kya warns him of the danger of trying to scale down a wet cliff face in the dark, but Bumi continues and dares them to follow, saying it "should be no problem for a couple of benders." Kya and Tenzin leap past Bumi, easily reaching the bottom in a few seconds using their bending.

They tease Bumi and offer to help him down, but he refuses. Soon afterwards, Bumi slips and falls, hitting his head on an outcropping before splashing into the water at the base of the waterfall.

At the Southern Water Tribe, Korra runs into her mother, Senna, who asks how she feels about the tensions between their two tribes, and specifically between her and her father. Korra tries to explain that all she had ever really wanted was to be the Avatar and that she is still furious with her father for having lied to her about his banishment and about his and Tenzin's keeping her confined in the Southern Water Tribe as a child. Senna tries to assure Korra that she and Tonraq merely wanted her to live a normal life until Korra was ready to fulfill her duties as the Avatar.

Korra insists that she cannot standby and let their tribes go to war. Senna reminds her that the North and South have been at odds for decades before she was born and she cannot expect to undo them in a day. Korra storms off angrily, ready to stop the growing rebellion Varrick is leading, of which she believes her father is a part. When she arrives at Unalaq's residence, she sees Northern soldiers tied up and rushes to find her uncle, but she sees masked men have taken her uncle captive.

After a futile attempt to negotiate with the rebels, Korra chases them, doing everything she can to slow them down without hurting them. She finally catches up to the man who she thinks is her father, but it turns out he is not and her father did not actually join the rebellion. Korra convinces Unalaq to give the rebels a fair trial rather than throwing them and Varrick in jail.

Meanwhile, Kya is healing Bumi's head injury while telling him that he cannot do everything a bender can, causing Bumi to retort that Kya is not his mother and therefore she does not get to tell him what he can and cannot do. Tenzin remarks that Bumi is the oldest of them, but always acted like the youngest, forcing him to become the responsible one. In response, Kya asks Tenzin where he was after Aang died, because she was the only family member who packed up and moved her whole life to be with Katara during that difficult time. At this, Tenzin accuses Kya of spending years of flitting around the world, trying to find herself, while he was carrying the future of an entire culture on his shoulders. Bumi mocks Tenzin, describing his struggles as vacationing around the world with their dad.

Tenzin realizes that the difference between his upbringing and his siblings' is at the root of their current conflict, which Kya confirms by stating that Tenzin thinks he is "some savior who has to carry on Dad's legacy". Tenzin asks who else is going to do it if not him, prompting Bumi and Kya to remind him that they are Aang's kids too and all of them are carrying on his legacy. Kya and Bumi express regret at coming on this vacation, and Tenzin tells them siblings to check for Ikki back at the temple to give him some space. They do so, while Tenzin continues the search by himself.

Korra approaches her parents and apologizes to her father for thinking he was involved with the rebels and for the pain she caused her parents. Tonraq subsequently apologizes for holding Korra back, and Senna reveals her and Tonraq's initial plans to have a normal life, which changed when they found out Korra was the Avatar. Senna stated that they had always knew that there would come a day when the world needed Korra and Korra would no longer need them. However, Korra denies it, claiming that she would always need them and gives her parents a hug. But their family moment is interrupted, as Unalaq enters the hut with several Northern soldiers and arrests Tonraq and Senna for allegedly plotting against him, much to Korra's surprise.

4. Civil Wars (2)

In the outskirts of Wolf Cove, Tonraq and Senna are being taken away in a prison truck that is waiting outside of their house. Korra is standing outside trying to convince Unalaq that he is making a mistake, but Unalaq assures Korra that there is nothing to worry about due to the fairness of the trial that will be assured by Judge Hotah.

Meanwhile, Mako, Bolin, and Asami are waiting for Varrick in his mansion to close the deal with Future Industries. Just as Bolin comments that Eska cannot find him there, she, Desna, and several Northern waterbenders walk in looking for Varrick and inform the three members of Team Avatar that Varrick is a traitor as well as Korra's parents and they all are to stand trial. Eska, Desna, and the waterbenders leave finding no trace of Varrick, but before Eska walks out she insists that Bolin bow to her as she leaves, which he unquestioningly does while referring to her as his sweet koalaotter.

Asami tells Bolin that he has to stand up for himself and tell Eska the truth about how he really feels. Varrick's voice suddenly interrupts, claiming that Bolin should disappear rather than be honest, like he did. Varrick reveals that he is hiding inside his stuffed platypus bear, Ping-Ping, along with Zhu Li, but he refuses to come out until he knows it is safe. Mako leaves to find Korra while Varrick gives Bolin some cash by means of the platypus bear's backside, noting that Bolin can use bribery to win the trial for the rebels, since it is most likely rigged by Unalaq, to which Bolin agrees.

At the Southern Air Temple, Tenzin is still looking for Ikki while being bothered by ring-tailed winged lemurs. He hears Ikki's voice from a nearby cave, where she is having a "civilized breakfast" with four young flying bison. Ikki is in the middle of saying a blessing, showing her thanks for the food, her new best friends and that Jinora and Meelo are not there, when Tenzin walks in and asks to join her. He takes a seat next to Blueberry Spicehead and is introduced to the other three, Princess Rainbow, Twinkle Starchild, and Juniper Lightning Bug, whom Ikki introduces as her new brothers and sisters. They also become Tenzin's new "brothers and sisters" after Ikki asks them if it is all right.

In a courtroom in Wolf Cove, Bolin explains to Asami that he gave some people all the money, told them to "take care of it", and winked at them. Asami notices the ordinary men in the crowd to whom he is referring and, knowing his mistake, slaps her forehead with the palm of her hand. When the bailiff called the court to order and presented Judge Hotah, Bolin realizes that he should have bribed Hotah, earning him a sarcastic agreement from Asami. The trial begins as Unalaq steps forward, informing everyone that he was attacked by rebels in the night while he was sleeping and that he awoke to find that Avatar Korra had saved him.

Korra is questioned about the rebel meeting that had taken place to discuss a civil war. Korra answers honestly, explaining that all of the people on trial had attended the meeting, including her mother and father. In between Bolin's objections, she reveals the information that the meeting took place in her parents' house and was led by Tonraq and Varrick, but immediately objects afterward, claiming that her parents are nonetheless innocent. The judge retires from the courtroom, stating that he will return with his final decision.

Bolin steps out to try once more to break up with Eska, explaining that the spark they had is now gone. Eska agrees that there is a chasm and plans to fill it with marriage, marked by the betrothal necklace she gives to him with spikes and a skull charm on it. Judge Hotah returns and declares Senna's innocence, but informs the others that they have been found guilty of treason and each of them is sentenced to death, including Tonraq. Enraged, Korra threatens to kill Hotah if he carries out the sentence, but Unalaq interrupts saying that he will talk to the judge, and as a result he has their sentence commuted to life in prison, for which Korra thanks her uncle.

Back at the air temple, Tenzin and Ikki are still in the cave as Tenzin is enjoying not being yelled at or told that he is delusional. Ikki wants to invite Kya and Bumi, but Tenzin insists that they would "spoil [their] good mood". Ikki objects, commenting that Kya is nice and pretty, and that Bumi is funny. Tenzin takes this opportunity to explain to Ikki the difficulties of being part of a family by explaining that Meelo is funny too, and Jinora can be sweet and gentle. Ikki realizes that family will always be there when needed despite these difficulties and they both agree to go back, but also to return to visit the sky bison.

Korra and Senna enter Tonraq's cell at the Southern Water Tribe prison and are relieved to find out that he is all right. Korra wants to break her father out of prison, but he objects, informing her that saving him would start a war, in which case the North would crush the South. He assures her that he will be all right and makes her promise that she will not do anything rash. Korra and Senna return to their home, where Korra comforts her mother, who feels helpless.

On a nearby mountainside, Korra chases down Judge Hotah while riding Naga and forces him out of his car, insisting he release her father from prison. The judge reveals that he cannot do that because he was simply following Unalaq's orders. Korra angrily demands that Hotah explain himself, but the judge tries to evade the question, stating that he has already said too much. He relents, however, after Korra threatens him by placing his head inside of Naga's mouth, informing the young Avatar that Unalaq had told him what to say but needed the trial to appear fair. Korra also finds out that Unalaq had only freed her mother and changed her father's sentence to keep her on his side while still getting his brother out of the way. Judge Hotah also blurts out that Unalaq was the one responsible for her father's banishment.

Inside the statue room at the Southern Air Temple, Bumi is talking to his father 's statue, apologizing for not being an airbender and seeking his father's approval for trying to keep the world safe. Kya, after secretly listening to Bumi, assures him that Aang would most definitely be proud of him and comforts him with a hug, for which Bumi is thankful.

Back in the Southern Water Tribe, Korra tells Mako, Asami, and Varrick what she found out from the judge about Unalaq. She explains to them how Unalaq hired the barbarians to attack the Northern Water Tribe and told them to hide in the spirit forest, knowing that his brother would attack them. This got Tonraq banished, so that Unalaq could become chief himself. Korra asks Mako, Asami, and Varrick to help her bust her father out of jail, to which they willingly agree. Bolin and Pabu appear at the door, wearing formal Water Tribe robes, and Bolin angrily announces that he is getting married to Eska. Korra points out that the boy is supposed to give the girl the betrothal necklace, and Varrick assures Bolin that he will help him out of his relationship.

Asami, Mako, and Korra infiltrate the prison, stunning a guard with an electrified glove and approaching Tonraq's cell, only to realize that he is not in there. Unalaq appears, telling Korra that she will never see her father again, since he is on a ship headed to the Northern Water Tribe to serve his sentence. Korra threatens to take out Unalaq and his army if he does not bring her father back, but he reminds her that she is the Avatar and, therefore, cannot threaten war because she must remain neutral in order for the tribes to be unified.

Korra accuses Unalaq of never wanting unity, only power, and theorizes that he has always been jealous of Tonraq, pointing out that he must have been greatly upset to find out that his brother had fathered the Avatar. Unalaq still insists that he only wants to help Korra realize her destiny, but she does not buy it and tells him she does not want his help anymore. Unalaq goes on to tell Korra that the dark spirits will destroy the South if there is a civil war, but Korra continues to demand that Unalaq bring her father back and leave with his troops, thinking she has the advantage, since she is the only one that can open the Northern spirit portal.

Unalaq taunts Korra by informing her that he does not, in fact, need her and that she has already served her purpose. Korra, enraged by this comment, sends several balls of fire whirling toward Unalaq, which he tactfully blocks with water that he bends from a water skin at his side. Unalaq retaliates, while Mako joins in with a fireblade, only to be blasted in the face by Unalaq. Korra dodges Unalaq's attacks and bends a blast of air down the corridor, sending Unalaq flying against the back wall. Team Avatar takes this opportunity to escape to Varrick's yacht.

On the street, Bolin and "Ping-Ping" are walking down the street when a Northern Water Tribe soldier asks Bolin if he has a license for the animal. Varrick and Zhu Li, who are still inside of Ping-Ping drop money out of the backside of the Platypus bear, causing an uproar in the crowd, which causes a distraction for them and Bolin to slip onto Varrick's yacht. Korra, Mako, and Asami arrive on the yacht and plan to catch up to the ship that harbors Tonraq, realizing that the Northern Water Tribe ships are in the way.

Korra mentions that she could waterbend the ships out of the way if she had a plane. Varrick responds by opening a hatch on his yacht, revealing a biplane, but there is no runway. However, Korra develops the idea of having Asami pilot the plane, while she and Mako supply sufficient thrust using firebending. The plan is a success and Korra clears a path for Varrick's yacht by going into the Avatar State and waterbending a huge wave that pushes the ships that form the blockade out of the way.

Varrick drives his yacht through, while still in the platypus bear, with no problem and the three in the plane continue on to Tonraq's ship. They crash the plane into the water after jumping out and Korra waterbends them onto the ship, taking out the Northern soldiers while they are distracted by the plane crash, also using waterbending. Korra freezes one of the guards in ice and demands he tell her where the prisoners are. Korra finds and rescues Tonraq and the other prisoners, but her father questions her actions along the way. Everyone escapes onto Varrick's yacht and they get away.

Back at the air temple, Tenzin and Ikki return, much to Pema 's relief, and Meelo and Jinora apologize at the prompting of their mother. The siblings make up and run off to play airball. Tenzin also apologizes to his siblings, admitting he had overlooked Aang's flaws. Kya and Bumi apologize in return, as Kya pulls out a picture of their family that she received from Katara. They all agree that, despite the imperfections in their family, they are indeed a happy family.

Meanwhile, Korra explains to her father everything that Unalaq did. Tonraq comes to the decision that he has to put his brother in his place. The other prisoners pledge their support, along with Korra, but Tonraq tells her that she can help by getting the United Forces on their side. She agrees and states that she will get all of the help that her father needs. Her father and the other prisoners depart from the yacht and return to coast, while Korra leaves with Mako, Bolin, Asami, Varrick and Zhu Li on the yacht.

Bolin thanks Korra for making the break-up between him and Eska official, but Varrick announces that they have company. After seeing through the telescope, a horrified Bolin informs everyone that it is his "darling Eska" speeding toward the yacht in a heartbroken rage of waterbending. He then asks Varrick if the yacht is fast enough to outrun his "crazy, waterbending, ex-girlfriend", prompting Varrick to increase the speed of his yacht, saying "Why do you think I built this boat?" and they easily outrun Eska.

5. Peacekeepers

In Republic City, tensions between Southern and Northern Water Tribe people rise as a Southern Water Tribe cultural center is bombed. Mako, back in the police force, tries to track down the culprits while Varrick produces anti-Northern propaganda "movers" ( motion pictures ) starring Bolin. Korra fails to persuade President Raiko to send troops in support of the Southern rebellion. A conflicted Mako reveals Korra's plan to suborn General Iroh to commit the United Forces to the war to Raiko. Korra sets off on a sea voyage to the Fire Nation to seek the Fire Lord's support, but is pursued by Eska and Desna, and eventually swallowed by a gargantuan dark spirit.

6. The Sting

Mako and Asami investigate the theft of a shipment of Future Industries mecha-tanks bound for the Southern rebels, and enlist the Triple Threat Triads for a sting operation. They are double-crossed and find Asami's warehouses looted. In desperation, Asami sells a controlling share of Future Industries to Varrick before Mako identifies him as the instigator of the various bombings and thefts, though he lacks the evidence to convince his superiors. An amnesiac Korra washes ashore on a Fire Nation island.

7. Beginnings (1)

After falling unconscious on the beach of Bhanti Island, members of the Bhanti carry Korra to the temple where they reside. There, the shaman uses firebending to read Korra's energy and concludes that she is infected with a dark spirit who would consume the Avatar Spirit if it was not cleansed in time. The shaman orders the sages to lower Korra into subterranean spirit waters, where she reconnects with her spirits, as well as four of her past lives: Aang, Roku, Kyoshi, and Kuruk. The past Avatars attempt to remind her of who she is, but she is unable to remember, prompting a young man to appear behind her in an orb of gold light.

She asks him if he was the spirit Raava, whom she was told to find; the man said that he is not, but assures Korra that he can aid her in finding Raava, before introducing himself as Wan and recalling how he became the first Avatar.

Wan shows Korra his life, starting with his stealing food from the Chou brothers to feed himself and his friends. He successfully evades his pursuers for a while, but the brothers eventually catch up to him and subsequently throw him into a muddy pen with hybrid pigs. Wan returns to his tree house, bringing Yao and Jaya what little food he had managed to salvage in his tunic. He laments over their impoverished lifestyle, wishing they could live like the Chous. Jaya cautions him against stealing from the Chous again, fearing he would wind up dead, or rather banished into the Spirit Wilds. Despite Jaya's attempt to convince Wan that some people simply have power and others do not, Wan seems only inspired to develop a plan to obtain power.

In the city, a group of hunters prepared to journey into the Spirit Wilds in order to collect food, knowing that the local lion turtle would grant them the element of fire to protect themselves against wild spirits. Wan immediately volunteers; however, after receiving the ability to control fire, he feigns fear and is told to return the power of fire to the lion turtle before returning to the city. Wan returns to the city without returning his fire and shows his newly acquired ability to Yao and Jaya back at the tree house. They tell him that it is forbidden to bring the power of the elements into the city, but he remains adamant and says that they can use the power to change things.

That night, Wan leads Jaya and several other citizens in a raid on the Chou palace. To allow the others sufficient time to escape, Wan battles the Chou brothers and the palace guards and is unmasked during the altercation by one of the Chous. Hesitating to kill the smallest of the Chou brothers, Wan is apprehended and brought before the lion turtle. Refusing to reveal the names of those involved in the raid, Chou the Elder banishes Wan to the Spirit Wilds and Little Chou orders him to give the fire back to the lion turtle. However, Wan pleads with the lion turtle and convinces the giant to allow him to keep his fire power in order to survive in the wilds.

As he wanders the Spirit Wilds, Wan encounters several hostile spirits, such as accidentally stepping on a talking frog that grows giant, forcing him to remain awake until he eventually collapses from exhaustion. However, vines sprout up from the ground beneath him and starts to pull him in. Before being engulfed completely, Wan uses his bending to propel himself back to the surface. Although exhausted, he decides to venture onward until he comes across a tree carrying strange fruit. He plucks one of the fruits and attempts to eat it, but is surprised to find the fruit is actually a swarm of wasps that promptly attack him. In his attempt to flee the swarm, Wan inadvertently falls off a cliff.

As he lands, he finds himself looking at an oasis with trees bearing actual fruit. Still hungry, Wan approaches the island, but before he could reach it, an aye-aye spirit appears and tells him that, being a human, he is not welcome at the oasis. Wan tries to reason with the spirit, telling the entity that he was hungry and in need of sleep. The spirit refused to listen, prompting Wan to use his fire to force the spirit aside. The spirit easily evaded the attack by teleporting behind him and proceeded to shove him to a nearby bush.

Shorty after, a procession of spirits approached the oasis. In a final attempt to enter the oasis, Wan disguises himself as a bush spirit but is stopped by the aye-aye spirit, who recognizes his distinct human scent. The spirit guardian orders Wan to return home once more, and he reveals that he was banished, causing one of the spirits to suggest moving to another lion turtle city. Wan expresses disbelief at the thought of other lion turtles and inquires as to where he would find one. The aye-aye spirit mocks him, revealing there are dozens of lion turtles, refuses to help him and Wan stalks off in frustration.

While traveling through the wilds, he spotted a cat deer caught in a net. He initially decides to eat the creature but ultimately pities it and chooses to help set it free. Before he could release the animal from its restraints, the group of hunters Wan was initially supposed to accompany show up. To protect the cat deer, Wan fights the hunters and leads them away from the creature, using the forest's own hazards to his advantage. Though he manages to stop two of his pursuers, Wan is eventually chased down.

Before he could be apprehended, however, the aye-aye spirit appears and possesses one of the hunters, prompting the other to flee in fear. He exits the body, leaving the human part aye-aye and deformed. The oasis guardian subsequently carries Wan to the oasis and allows the spirit waters to heal his injures and feed him. Deciding he has had enough of humanity and their ways, Wan resolves to stay in the wilds to learn the ways of the spirits. The guardian explains that spirits are able to take over bodies for a short time and any longer can kill someone.

Back at the lion turtle city, a huntsmen explains to the people that that the spirits attacked his men and that they were protecting Wan, like he was one of them. Jaya and Tao are happy to hear that Wan is still alive, and the former tells the people that since Wan has proved that people can live in the wild with the power of fire, they no longer need Chou's rules and asks them to leave with him and start over, eliciting a joyful response.

As time passed, Wan befriends the spirits and learns the Dancing Dragon form from a white dragon, mastering the art to the point where fire became an extension of his own body. In doing so, he improved his firebending skills and managed to drive off any hunters that trespassed in spirit grounds. Eventually growing restless, Wan decides to leave the oasis with the company of his cat deer Mula, in order to travel the world and find the other lion turtle cities.

After wandering across many different terrains, Wan and Mula run across a large group of spirits running away from the all-powerful spirits, Raava and Vaatu, who are battling in a nearby valley, threatening to destroy it. Wan goes to investigate and attempts to stop the fighting in order to protect the spirits and animals in the surrounding forest. Vaatu manipulates Wan, telling if to help him as the other spirit has tormented him for ten thousand years, and tricks him into using his fire to separate Vaatu from his counterpart, Raava.

After Vaatu left the scene, Raava informs Wan of his mistake, telling him that he is the spirit of darkness and chaos and she, as the spirit of light and peace, had kept him under control for the past ten thousand years. Wan also discovers that the human and spirit realms are now headed toward annihilation because of his interference. Back in the present, Korra says that she has finally found Raava.

8. Beginnings (2)

Korra, still submerged in the subterranean pool of spirit water, becomes the topic of discussion as a Bhanti man questions if she should be pulled up, to which the shaman responds that she is connecting with her deepest Avatar memories and that she must confront her own past if she is to move forward. Korra returns her attention to Wan 's story, where he is debating with Raava about human interference in spiritual matters. Although Wan offers his help to the light spirit in finding Vaatu before it is too late to prevent the annihilation of both humans and spirits, an already furious Raava rejects the offer and flies off after she warns the firebender not to interfere with her again, which leaves a dejected Wan to move on with Mula.

Later, Wan discovers some people with the ability to airbend and is thrilled to see other humans for the first time in two years. Frightened, the airbenders flee and Wan tries to follow them until he approaches a cliff which he cannot traverse. He notices one airbender running toward him, but is surprised when he sees the man floating toward a lion turtle that is levitating in the air. After Wan witnesses the creature taking away the element from the people upon their return from the forest, Wan makes his way onto the lion turtle by catapulting himself toward it from a small tree.

As he walks into a village, he eagerly introduces himself to the confused people. Before Wan can tell them his story, however, Vaatu arrives and gains control of the spirits in the village, which begin terrorizing the inhabitants. He reveals his own presence, to which the villagers question on Raava's absence. Wan tries to fend off the spirits with firebending before the light spirit arrives, knocking Vaatu down and driving away the dark spirits. She and Vaatu acknowledge each other and, after gloating how he would destroy her at Harmonic Convergence, flees with the dark spirits.

Confused, the people ask Raava why the spirits attacked to which she replies that Wan should tell them. Pushed by the spirit, he explains himself, wishing he can undo his mistake. Raava warns the firebender that every time Vaatu gains power, her strength wanes, threatening to cover the world in darkness. Wan resolves to beat Vaatu by asking the lion turtle to grant him the power of air. Though the creature is initially hesitant, as no human has ever been able to bend more than one element at the same time, he finally relents after seeing Wan's determination to revert the damage he has done.

However, Raava will have to hold the power until he masters it, leading to the light spirit questioning why she should aid the very human who caused this mess in the first place. When Wan reasons that neither of them can defeat Vaatu alone, as only together they have a chance, Raava reluctantly agrees to help.

As they set off to master airbending, Raava explains that Harmonic Convergence is an event in which she and Vaatu battle for the fate of the world. With only a year to prepare, they combine their energies via Raava passing through Wan's body, granting him airbending after more firebending training. As Wan practices with the element, he asks Raava why she and Vaatu have not destroyed one another after ten thousand years. The light spirit explains that light and darkness cannot exist without each other; even if she was to defeat Vaatu in this encounter, darkness would grow inside her until her counterpart emerges and vice versa.

Since Wan believes that it is not disastrous if Vaatu wins due to Raava eventually being reborn, the light spirit points out that Vaatu intends to destroy the entire world, plunging it into darkness for ten thousand years until her rebirth. Realizing what is at stake, Wan decides to seek out more lion turtles in order to receive more elements. After being granted waterbending and earthbending, Wan asks Raava why humans and spirits are in conflict, to which she responds that ever since spirits entered the mortal realm, humans have been forced to live separately under the protection of the lion turtles, building settlements on their backs. She further says that most humans think only of themselves, regardless of how many others are around.

Near the end of the year, after training with air and earth, Wan and Raava find a ravaged section of a forest and he recognizes his friend Jaya among the people present. Jaya reveals that Wan's survival in the Spirit Wilds inspired them to leave the lion turtle they lived on and try their luck. Wan asks whether Yao came with them as well, which Jaya confirmed, though he finished by saying that Yao and many others from their group had died. Jaya inquires as to why Wan defended Raava after one of the men there launched a flame toward her.

Wan proceeds to introduce her, assuring them that she is not like the dark spirits they encountered. However, Jaya rhetorically asks what the difference between spirits is as they fight any they see. Raava admonishes them for the rash behavior, stating that it would only exacerbate the situation. Suddenly, a crowd of spirits, some of whom Wan recognizes from the oasis, including the aye-aye spirit, arrive to drive out the humans for burning down their forest. Wan attempts to mediate the conflict, but Vaatu appears, corrupting the spirits and feeding off their anger.

The humans, led by Jaya, provoke the dark spirits with firebending, but Wan keeps both groups from clashing with airbending. He and Raava subsequently combine their energies to stop the battle, allowing the young man to bend all four elements. The fighting briefly stops and the spirits turn to normal while the humans are surprised by the extraordinary feat. The strain of Raava possessing him is too much, causing him to pass out. Raava carries an unconscious Wan away as the battle reignites. When Wan comes to, Vaatu appears, having grown larger and revealing that all the humans have been annihilated. The dark spirit promptly departs, promising that the end will come soon.

Raava, in a severely weakened state, asks Wan to travel to the Southern portal for the convergence. Raava tells Wan that she was wrong about humans, not knowing they had such nobility and courage as Wan prompts her not to give up. In the final battle, Wan attempts to fight Vaatu with his bending powers. Despite his efforts, he is extremely outmatched by the dark spirit. Wan is severely beaten despite his bending abilities and fusing with Raava. They fight once again, with his efforts more successful. Though her presence puts a great strain on his body with the possibility of death, Wan refuses to give up.

As the convergence begins, Wan, in a desperate gamble, touches the Southern portal, absorbing the spiritual energy, and permanently fusing his energy and essence with Raava, thus creating the Avatar Spirit. After beating Vaatu back and imprisoning him inside the Tree of Time with the use of all four elements, Wan makes it his mission to bring peace to the world while acting as the bridge between spirits and humans to avoid another disaster. To do so, he has all of the spirits leave the physical world and return to the Spirit World, at which point he closes the spirit portal to ensure that no human would be able to physically enter the Spirit World and release the dark spirit.

The lion turtles declare that the world had entered a new age and decide to renounce their position as protectors of humanity and will no longer grant humans bending. Wars between cultures of respective bending elements ignite and Wan attempts to mediate them. Many years later, an elderly, dying Wan sits against a large earth coin, amidst a war-torn battlefield. He apologizes to Raava for failing to bring peace and balance to the world and laments that despite all his best efforts, chaos and destruction still exist in the world, even with Vaatu locked away.

Raava comforts him and tells him that she will always be with him for all his lifetimes and that they would never give up. As Wan exhales his last breath, a golden light exits his body and disintegrates in little sparks. As the scene fades to white, his newborn reincarnation is heard crying and Korra's vision ends.

Korra opens her eyes while in the Avatar State and shoots up, gasping for air as the glow subsides. The elderly shaman asks her who she is. Korra replies, saying her name is Korra and that she is the Avatar. The shaman takes Korra outside to a herd of flying bison that were saved since the Hundred Year War, musing over the fact that she never thought she would be able to offer one to the Avatar. When Korra wonders how long she has been out, the shaman cannot answer her, though urges her to take action as the Harmonic Convergence will be upon them in just a few weeks. Determined, Korra states that she has to close the spirit portal before the celestial event occurs. Taking one of the sky bison, she leaves the island.

9. The Guide

Korra seeks Tenzin's help to enter the spirit world; but much to Tenzin's frustration, their attempts fail; Korra is instead guided by Jinora, who proves to have a strong connection to the spirits. In Republic City, Mako continues his investigation of Varrick. When Asami goes to cheer Mako up, his apartment is raided by the police and they find evidence, planted by Varrick, that he was responsible for the thefts from Future Industries, resulting in his second arrest. At the South Pole, Unalaq fails to open the sealed North Pole portal himself, and reports to Vaatu, who promises that Korra shall come to them.

10. A New Spiritual Age

In the spirit world with Jinora, Korra must contend with the difficult relationships between spirits. When the two are separated, Korra is transformed into a childlike version of herself. She is rescued by Iroh, who has "retired" into the spirit world and who teaches her that she must exert strong control over her emotions in the spirit world, among other lessons, allowing Korra to travel to the Tree of Time, where the portals meet in the spirit world. Meanwhile, Jinora finds Wan Shi Tong's library and convinces the Spirit of Knowledge to allow her to learn about the spirit portals.

While learning that Vaatu's seal can indeed be broken if both portals are opened during Harmonic Convergence, Jinora learns that Wan Shi Tong is in league with Unalaq. Attempting to rescue Jinora, Korra is forced by Unalaq to open the northern portal. After a short battle, Korra is rescued by a friendly spirit and forced out of the spirit world without Jinora, whose inanimate physical body remains in a coma-like state.

11. Night of a Thousand Stars

Bolin visits Mako in prison, and Mako tries to warn his brother against Varrick. Disbelieving him, Bolin goes to the finale of his "movers" series, which President Raiko is also attending. During the performance, Bolin foils an apparent attempt to kidnap President Raiko. When he interrogates one of the kidnappers, the man incriminates Varrick, who is promptly arrested, with Mako freed. Korra warns President Raiko about Harmonic Convergence and Unalaq's plans, but President Raiko retains his army to defend Republic City. Korra turns to Varrick, who agrees to give her his personal battleship. At the South Pole, Tonraq is defeated in a grueling duel by Unalaq.

12. Harmonic Convergence

Senna tells Korra and her friends that the Southern resistance has been defeated and Tonraq captured. Meanwhile, Jinora nears death. With Harmonic Convergence hours away, Korra and her friends stage a frontal attack on the fortified South Pole, wherein everybody except Bumi is captured. Bumi infiltrates the camp and through a series of absurdities which mirror the supposed "tall tales" which he often tells, annihilates all opposition, freeing Korra and her friends. Korra and numerous of her allies follow Unalaq into the portal, while Asami takes an injured Tonraq to Katara for healing.

While Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi seek Jinora, Korra goes to close the portals while Mako and Bolin hold off Unalaq, who reveals that he plans to unite with Vaatu to become a Dark Avatar and rule the world. Korra is too late to close the portal and Harmonic Convergence begins; Vaatu is freed for the first time in 10,000 years.

13. Darkness Falls

Korra tries to imprison Vaatu while Mako and Bolin attempt to keep Unalaq out of the spirit world. Aided by Desna and Eska, Unalaq overpowers Mako and Bolin, ambushes Korra, and merges with Vaatu, becoming the Dark Avatar. Korra and Unalaq then battle each other in their respective Avatar States. In the Spirit World, Tenzin and his siblings meet Iroh, who indicates how to find Jinora. The siblings then venture into the Fog of Lost Souls, which drives humans mad with their self-doubts. Kya and Bumi succumb to the fog and Tenzin nearly does as well, but is visited by a vision of Aang, by whose advice Tenzin clears the fog and frees his relatives, accepted his destiny as separate from that of his father for the first time in his life.

Mako and Bolin convince Eska and Desna to free them, but cannot render aid to Korra in time; Vaatu tears Raava out of Korra and Unalaq severs her connection with her past lives. Jinora senses the destruction of Raava and goes to help. Unalaq transforms into "Unavaatu", a powerful dark spirit, and departs into the physical world to destroy it and remake it in a fashion of his own choosing.

14. Light in the Dark

Tenzin and his siblings find Korra and her friends wounded and unconscious. Unavaatu attacks Republic City. During the attack, Varrick escapes prison. In the Spirit World, Kya heals Korra, whom Tenzin leads to the Tree of Time, telling her to meditate within it. While meditating, Korra unlocks previously untapped spiritual potential and teleports to Republic City to discover a fragment of Raava within Vaatu; both spirits cannot exist without each other and one will always regrow from within the other. Jinora's spirit illuminates the fragment, and Korra withdraws Raava and purifies Unavaatu, killing Unalaq and defeating Vaatu.

Tenzin, Kya, Bumi, Mako, Bolin, Desna and Eska defend Korra's body from attacking dark spirits. Korra and Raava return and use the Convergence to re-merge; the Avatar Spirit is reformed, but Korra's link with the previous Avatars appears to remain lost. After some contemplation, Korra decides to leave the spirit portals open, believing that spirits and humans can find a way to coexist and should be allowed the chance. She also declares the Southern Water Tribe to now be independent from the North as its own state. Korra and Mako break up, but pledge to remain friends.
